Analyst "opinions" after 10/10/09 games

Did anyone see College Football Final on the Mothership after the 10/10/09 game coverage?

They do a segment called Final Verdict, where Rece is the judge and Lou and Mark are arguing their cases.

Tonight they chose to discuss the following:

1) Florida and Alabama are the two best teams in the country (note this was not a statement that was debated, it was just presumed as unanimous)

2) Lou and Mark debated which team is the best non-SEC team.

3) Lou argued for Texas

4) Mark argued that USC was better than Texas

5) Rece ruled in favor of Lou; he noted that USC lost to Washington, a team that did not win a game last season.

Most people I have talked to and things I have read in various media outlets have said that since UT was ranked # 2 to start the season, if they went undefeated then they would be in the title game.

Realizing the Final Verdict segment is probably 99% entertainment, a few thoughts:

I realize # 4 above is only the opinion of Mark, or possibly he was told by his boss that he had to argue that case even if he did not agree with it just to make the show interesting, or something else I can't think of.

I could understand the # 4 argument above, if UT and USC both had a loss.  But to argue this when USC lost to Washington already..... In the words of John McEnroe, "YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!"  Think about this.  This is what analyst experts chose to debate on national TV, following this week's games.  Entertainment or not, coaches, harris poll voters, etc. may have watched this and (god forbid) let it influence their thoughts on which teams were better than others.

Some people think USC does not get special treatment by the national media over other seemingly equivalent or better teams.  I am not one of those people.  And come on, let's face it, the SEC undefeateds are the BEST.  No questions.  In fact, I still think LSU and Auburn are ahead of UT, even with 1 loss.  This is how good the SEC is!

I still would bet that if Texas wins out, they will be in the big game.  I'm not really all that mad about the above.  I am rather going through a bout of reality, as in "did they really do that?  Why did they do that?  Why would anybody do that?  Are these people uninformed?  Do they watch college football games?  Are they evil? Is Gary Danielson their idol?"  Just the typical thoughts and questions.

Or maybe I'm way off and they did that entire segment just to showcase that no one could possibly make a legitimate argument that USC is better than UT at this point in the season.  But nobody is better than the SEC undefeateds, I mean come on!  Let's not get crazy here.

Final comments: I plan to make this my last "injustice driven" or "anger driven" post.  Unless something super-insane happens that warrants written condemnation.

Haven't seen Gameday Final yet...

…was busy watching UW’s crazy comeback over Arizona.

I’m a Seattle area Texas Ex and I just have to say I think Coach Sark deserves coach of the year half way thru the season. He is turning that program around fast, stealing away def coor Nick Holt and holding a verbal commit from Nick Montana.

Having the best QB in the nation no one talks about helps too, but he is doing an outstanding job.

I just hope Sark is doing everything legit and legal

i think we have as much talent as the SEC

definitely as much talent as Auburn and probably as much as LSU…it’s just not particularly being used to it’s full potential

I'm confused about why anyone thinks Auburn is better than UT

I watched part of their game against Arkansas and I felt like they were a poor tackling team with no pass rush to speak of on defense. For a half, they could not run the ball, and ultimately Texas A&M generated more yards in offense. I think Auburn is vastly improved over last year. .But are they better than Texas? No.

Alabama and Florida

I’m not impressed by either of these teams offenses. I do like their defenses. If Alabama jumps Texas this week, hopefully it will give Texas more motivation against ou.

Texas is the 3rd best team in CFB this year

We’re lights out on Defense, great on ST, and capable of greatness on offense. Can we beat UF right now? No. Can we beat UF if we play our best? Absolutely. Can we beat Bama right now? Yes. Alabama is a good team, but they really havent done much on offense to blow me away. I think our Defense could shut them down. We just have to win on ST and with our defense because their D would beat us.

Regardless of how well we play, if we win out, we are in Pasadena. UF and Bama have to play each other. LSU losing last night was a blessing. If LSU won, LSU would vault to the top and then it would be all about them. UF could win out and play in SEC title game against Bama, assuming Bama beat LSU. Bama wins SEC title game, and plays in nat’l championship. If there are 2 SEC teams with 1 loss, one of them could jump a 1-loss UT. How much would the media love to see Bama-UF in the NCG?

UF winning destroys the chances of that happening. Now all we have to do is win out and play the SEC champ in Pasadena. Last night was just that—last night. We will move on and put it behind us.

Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

I have to disagree

“In fact, I still think LSU and Auburn are ahead of UT, even with 1 loss. This is how good the SEC is!”

This is the same SEC that fielded a MSU team that lost to Cougar High yesterday. I think you’re a little high on their bandwagon. Yes, they are the best conference in college football, but that doesn’t mean your statement above is true.

Auburn looked AWFUL yesterday against a mediocre (albeit much improved) Arkansas team. Auburn is absolutely not better than the Horns are right now. I’d venture to say that we could beat them by three scores easily if we played them.

LSU is also really a suspect team (as is Florida, I think). Their offense is non-existent, and while you can make the case that ours was this week, in general we are way more loaded top to bottom. The LSU defense is very good, but keep in mind that they needed a game winning drive to take care of a Georgia team that got pummeled by the Vols yesterday (THE VOLS!) and that Okie State put away earlier in the year.

Even the Gators, while I still have them as my #1 team, are not as loaded as they have been in the past. I think we can hang with any of the big boys in the SEC. Bama has looked the most impressive, and really they are a vanilla team that just pounds you. A truly athletic, fast team can give them a run for their money.

I think we should be worried about OU, but I also think we need to look at the fact that we haven’t even played up to 75% of our potential yet and we are 5-0. If we can put it all together at some point this year, the Horns will be up in Pasadena.

Big surprise

in a segment on a television show that is about arguing, they did not just agree that Texas is better. They are trying to get ratings, and discussing who is the best out side of the SEC, a round about way of saying who is going to play the SEC champion in the national championship, is the most interesting to most college fans.

Quality wins

USC has 1, we have none. That’s why May made the case that USC should be ranked ahead of Texas as of right now. Even they’re 1 road loss looks quality as Wash is good. Rece Davis claims it is a bad loss since they lost 12 games last year. The past seasons should not even matter at all, and that’s one of the big issues with these subjective polls – success/failures from previous seasons.

Would Texas be undefeated if they played USC’s schedule? That’s the point Mark May was trying to make, FWIW.

I would LOVE to have USC's Schedule

Really, lets trade places 10 years ago. We’ll be the PAC-1, and let them come battle with OU for the Big 12. I think could absolutely handle USC’s schedule.

And you are kidding that Washington going 0-12 last year doesn’t matter, right? I mean…. right?

Yawn

I really love where we’re at this year. On the field, we’re generally doing well, and have tons of upside potential still. In the ethereal media-internet hivemind, we’re less regarded, but I can’t care less; the Heisman is out the window (almost), and style points mean nothing right now; I can just relax and, being the stat-whore that I am, worry about things like if Earl Thomas will break defensive records this year, will Shipley get to 101 catches, so on and so forth.
