I found this interesting-

DeLoss, thanks for bringing Mack Brown to Texas. How do the schedules get made? Is it as easy as calling Washington's AD up and saying "Are you free the 24th?" or do you have a pattern you stick with?
DeLoss Dodds: What we're finding out in scheduling football games is a lot of people dont' want to play Texas. You have to start with that. The advantage we do have is a lot of football programs want to be in the state of Texas because of the recruiting base here. It's not as easy as it looks from the outside. It takes a good deal of conversation, managing schedules and balancing what you need your schedules to look like. But again, you start with the fact a lot of people don't want to play Texas.

It is interesting
Thanks for the post. Of course, there are a lot of teams that Texas doesn’t want to play either (we don’t recruit in their state, don’t want them in our state and don’t want to lose to them) but that’s probably not something you want your AD admitting to.

On recruiting
I’m meh about that. Teams will find a way to get into Texas, one way or another. For example, see A&M inviting Arkansas (and later on, USC) to visit our fine state. You can also fill up on patsies (Rice, UH, SMU) via 2-for-1’s for recruiting presence.
I don’t buy the “they don’t want to play us argument”—there’s plenty of high-caliber teams (USC, OU, Ohio State) that find room in their schedules for top-flight opponents. And while I admire Mack’s refusal to schedule games against FCS schools, for the common fan pay-per-view is pay-per-view, whether its Sam Houston State or Louisiana Monroe.
