LONGHORNS GET NO LOVE
Are the analysts serious or are they on drugs? The Longhorns faced the 20th ranked Sooners with the 13th ranked offense, 9th ranked defense (3rd in points allowed) on a neutral field and won but everyone calls it an ugly win saying it will hurt them in the polls? While Florida faced the unranked Razorbacks with the 15th ranked offense, 95th (yes, nine five) ranked defense (86th points allowed) at home and barely win by a field goal in the final seconds and they say they pulled it off and survive a scare? If anyone should drop in the polls it should be Florida, has anyone even looked at their schedule? They have only faced ONE ranked team all season and do not face another ranked team the rest of the season... Give me a break! While Texas has already faced and beat TWO ranked teams and will face THREE more in the coming month. Who has a tougher schedule and deserves to be at the top of the rankings.....

Quoting Coach Boom
Statistics are for losers – just win the damn game

I agree but...
The pollsters don’t think the same as Coach Boom and they are the ones that decided that the Soones should go to the championship last year even after we beat them.

Texas will be fine
if they win out.

It is sickening
how the media seems to be down on us, but not down on florida (only beat TN by 10 at home, and Arkansas today at home was also close?)

I agree its BS
But the SEC has won what, the last four MNC’s? And had the best record against other BCS conferences this year (the Pac-10 might have actually had the best)? So lets de-throne the SEC champ, and then bitch if the media still doesn’t give us any respect. Bottom line is right now the Big12 is not looking very good. But it doesn’t matter for us if we win out.

But the SEC has won what, the last four MNC’s?
2008 – UF
2007 – LSU
2006 – UF
2005 – I think you can get this one.

Let ‘em think the SEC champ will blow us out of the Rose Bowl. It don’t make a shit.

I was pretty incensed
when I heard Spencer Tillman saying Texas should have beaten “a depleted OU” by a lot more and that Alabama deserves the #2 BCS ranking (before Alabama’s game had even started), followed by Gary Danielson saying that “for the #1 team in the country, a win is a win. No one remembers anything else.” I know it’s CBS, but the excuses these people make for the SEC and all the demands for style points they make of the Big 12 are nauseating.
I realize that all Texas needs to do is go undefeated. I’m just sick of hearing the SEC get praised for the same crap the Big 12 gets bashed for.

That's what I'm talking about..
I could not believe all the negative BULL SH!T coming out of their C#CK HOLSTERS about the Longhorns after we pulled off the win in a game that is as big as most BCS bowl games are… It’s ridiculous!

I did a lot of eye-rolling today
Most of it during the Florida game. After a while I had to mute my tv because I didn’t want to hear Danielson scream his praise every time Tebow took a step forward. Then Florida won, the players rushed the field and everyone in the booth acted like they just watched the final moments of the National Championship. I almost had to check my calendar to make sure it was still October.
by seth78 on Oct 17, 2009 9:39 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I had to laugh about the Tebow BS
As he’s leading the game winning drive in the final seconds – at home, against an unranked team – they’re saying how Tebow just wills his team to win. Colt McCoy pulls that shit, his Heisman campaign is done. It’s so completely beyond comical at this point.
by bassale47 on Oct 17, 2009 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I loved
how on the one fumble, Tebow never secured the snap, tried to hand it to the running back anyway, never even touched the running back with the ball (basically dropped it to the ground), and the announcers proceeded to blame the running back for “getting there too early”, even after seeing the replay a few times.
Now the running back was at fault for not falling on the ball, he tried to pick it up, but the original fumble was not even close to his fault, it was obvious in the replay, and they never once even considered that Tebow might have made a mistake by trying to hand off a ball that he never had control of because of a bad snap. Classic.

Umm you said Texas has already faced two ranked teams
and who might those be?
by 2Cor12:9 on Oct 17, 2009 10:05 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I think Longhorn CCW must have meant TTU
was a ranked team, although they were not. But I agree with the point of this post. It seems like the media thinks the SEC is god’s gift to football. They say whatever they need to bolster their support no matter how the teams in that conference happen to perform. If Texas wins a rivalry game on a neutral field against a ranked opponent, it is an ugly win. If Florida beats an unranked team at home by a field goal in the last 10 seconds, it’s just a hard fought victory against a mighty SEC opponent.
PLEASE Texas win out and beat down whatever comes out of the SEC in the national championship. I know that’s a long way off, but that would be my dream outcome.

So, you'd rather have the big target
of No. 1 painted on you at ths point? Somebody in the SEC will beat Florida or Bama, and somebody will lose when those two face off in December. We’re fine. If BOTH of ’em would lose once and Iowa runs the table . . .

CBS is the worst, but it's because they are essentially trying to protect their product
They are gonna lick the ass of SEC teams because that’s their contract. If people take a step back, they’ll realize Bama, Florida and Texas all didn’t play their best today. No worries as long as we win out and play for it all.
by junglerules on Oct 17, 2009 10:18 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
exactly
the talking heads on cbs are paid to promote the product that is the sec. does anybody think spencer tillman—who played in the texas/ou game (and is one of the few former sooners who can speak without leaning on the phrase “you know”) doesn’t understand the dynamics of the rivalry? we’ve taken some terrible teams to that game and managed to win—1989 was a recently highlighted instance. i quit listening to these people years ago because it isn’t analysis, it’s propaganda often peppered with personal biases. i think we’ve all watched enough football to understand it without gary danielson’s skewered and compensated perspective.

I think Texas, Florida, and Alabama are remarkably similar
Stifling defenses. Offenses that leave a lot to be desired. But 2 are SEC teams, where having an offense that stalls regularly isn’t a big deal, and 1 is a Big 12 team, where defenses go unnoticed no matter how good they are.

I'm curious to see the BCS rankings tomorrow
If you listened to ESPN this week, they would have you believe that a 1-loss Va Tech would be ranked ahead of UT. Oh wait. 2-loss Va Tech.
I wonder what 1-loss team they are going to make a case for being better than Texas next week. This is funny. That’s what this is.
by longhorn_dan on Oct 17, 2009 10:23 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I think that had to do with what V-tech has done so far, and assuming they beat GT
if so, they would have beaten Miami, GT, and then lost to only unbeaten Bama. Under those premises, Brad Edwards felt like VT would be ahead now, but probably fall behind Texas as the season progressed and UT played some tougher teams.
The thing with USC is that the victory over Ohio State is starting to lose some luster, too. Cal? They’ve sucked. That Oregon-USC game could be big, especially for USC trying to stay in the national title race.
by junglerules on Oct 17, 2009 10:48 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s been said over and over, and here it is again: it doesn’t matter what the order is out of Florida, Texas, and Alabama. Only two of the three can mathematically finish the regular season undefeated, so there’s not going to be any kind of controversy isolated to just those three unless Texas loses a game.

media will make a push for USC
watch, it will happen. It happens every year. I hate them
by longhorn_dan on Oct 17, 2009 10:33 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
If UT and either ’Bama or UF are undefeated, then no, the media will not. Not even close. If there are two, and only two, undefeated, high-end programs left, it will be unquestioned, just as in 2006.
The only program with a legit gripe then would be Boise State. Or TCU, if they make it.
by burntorangehorn on Oct 17, 2009 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
There would be a hell storm if 1-loss USC beat out undefeated Texas for a national title berth. I think I’m just sick of May Day from ESPN. It’s like he doesn’t see the bad things USC does, but only sees the bad things Texas does. He appears very biased.
This coming from a very biased longhorn fan though :)

Um...
Have you been watching the games this season? In a power poll, I’d feel dirty ranking Texas any higher than 4th, and even that’s a stretch. This team has played horribly these past two weeks.
We’d get mopped up by Alabama, probably lose solidly to Florida, and Iowa has a decidedly superior resume. Texas has done nothing thus far to deserve a spot in the title game.
by BrooklynHorn on Oct 18, 2009 1:30 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
bama, florida, and iowa have all looked terrible at times. none of these teams have been dominant and id say all the games would be toss-ups. this defense/ST unit that Texas has is easily one of the best in the nation, right there with bama and florida, and both of those teams have struggled at times offensively. there isn’t a clear #1 right now.
by ThunderHorn on Oct 18, 2009 2:33 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
At what point has Bama looked "terrible"
because I’ve seen most of their games (including three against ranked opponents, and one against a solid Arkansas team), and not once while I was watching did they ever fail to control their opponent completely.
Its entirely trivial and superficial to see a lower score and think that Alabama has struggled. They haven’t struggled at all; their style of play is to dominate the trenches, stifle the opposing offense, and run you into submission, and they’ve been successful doing that during every outing. Texas, on the other hand, is a team built to score points, so a low score on our part justifiably incurs a criticism of having an off-game, which we have… nearly every week..
We simply don’t execute our chosen gameplan, which probably means we’re just not that good. Alabama does exactly what its trying to do. There’s no comparison unless you’re a shameless homer. Florida and Iowa are probably in between.
by BrooklynHorn on Oct 18, 2009 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Okay, all of you Florida/Alabama lovers
Have you even bothered to watch these two teams play? They have stagnant offenses just like we do, and I’d put our defense up against both of theirs any day of the week. I’m so unbelievably sick of the SEC love-fest bullshit, especially from our own fans. Of course we have problems, but so do they. There are no unbeatable teams.
by bassale47 on Oct 18, 2009 8:16 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
All are flawed
If Alabama had a QB like Tebow or Colt, they’d be the hands-down favorite. There are some unbelievable specimens on that team, just not at QB. Ole Miss and South Carolina have exposed that flaw in Alabama.
If Florida still had a versatile difference-maker like Percy Harvin, they’d be the same team that won it all a year ago. But Harvin’s in the NFL, and good defenses have found a way to contain Tebow. Their defense is awesome, but that Arkansas running back exposed their lack of tackling intensity a little yesterday. That could hurt in a street fight against a physical team like Alabama.
If Texas still had a versatile difference-maker like Quan Cosby, their offense would be almost unstoppable. But Cosby’s in the NFL, and Colt’s got only one reliable option in Jordan Shipley that defenses are beginning to double and triple-team on every play. Until another playmaker steps up (Goodwin, Fozzy) to give Colt some more options, their offense is going to struggle. Their defense is awesome. Just awesome.
Friends may come and go, but enemies accumulate.

its not just another play-maker stepping up, its Colt looking to find other WR’s b/c too often he just locks in on Shipley. Yesterday he didn’t have a ton of time, so locking in on that first option wasn’t surprising, but he needs to start going through his reads more b/c we have guys that are open at times and he will still throw to Shipley even in double coverage(which he did 2-3 times against Colorado that I can remember, and he’s done it in most games this year).

In the meantime, Florida has defeated a #4 LSU team. Their opponents have a combined record of (20-16), while our opponents have a combined record of (20-18).

SOS
I’m no Sagarin, but I kinda understand SOS. It seems, to me, that SOS is usually overweighted on the top (it doesn’t punish you enough for playing one good team and a bunch of I-AAs or equivalent vs playing teams that could beat you the whole season)
I don’t understand the win-loss totals and your point. You have win loss totals that show:
Our opponents have played 2 more games than UF’s opponents.
They have an equal number of wins (20).
They have two more losses (18 vs 16).
That seems pretty even to me (UF opp=55% win, UT opp=53% win) . That’s why I asked the question, which you essentially ignored. I’m not trying to be a jerk, I’m actually interested in your thoughts behind including it in your argument.
My reasoning on LSU is that they’ve struggled mightily with UW (3-4) and needed a goal line stand to beat Miss St. (3-4). Georgia, who may be a decent opponent, was a good, but not convincing win. And props for the D against UF, but only managing a field goal isn’t going to win you any games outside the SEC where 3-2 (AU over Miss St. 2008) is an acceptable score. They may be top 10 material, but definitely haven’t been top 5 material. I’d guess that they’ll end up with at least 3 losses the way they’ve been letting inferior opponents stick around.

Why don'tthe head lines Shout,'OU HELD TO -16 YARDS RUSHING!"
That’s a monster stat worthy of a huge banner head line. That’s a huge and dominate performance against a good running team.
All the national sports out lets have a axe to grind due their contracts. Is the ACC any better than the Mountain west? The ACC has more consumers in the team markets making more money for advertising during their games. Sorry Mountain West 10,000 home town fans ain’t gonna get your team on national TV.
What I don’t get is Texas is not Maryland, 50 million eyes and 25 million wallets that haven’t been banked raped like folks in the BIg 10 or the PAC 10 or parts of the SEC like Florida. Does the Media moguls think Texans don’t like Football? We have more money and jobs so we can still spend and we love football. Plus our home market is triple or quadruple the size of Florida or Alabama plus UT cranks out thousands of Alumni which has a large portion of high earners that spread across the country. We are the low hanging fruit. Stop fawning over those impoverished mid-westerners at Notre Dame there are more of us and we got money.

It's not about individual states, it's about the conference.
Houston has almost as many people as the state of Kansas.
Dallas has almost as many people as the state of Nebraska.
Missouri is the next most populous state in the Big XII and has less than 6 million people.
by ajax77777 on Oct 18, 2009 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
My guess is..
.. the big 12 has a greater population than either the big 10 and SEC and plus we have been less effected by the economic down turn. It might be more like 30-35 million better stuffed wallets.
So would not this translated in to higher advertising rates, greater profits and ultimately more attention, ass kissing or other forms of prostration by the media trying to hype a more profitable product.
by Xerxes on Oct 18, 2009 2:53 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Big 10 Country > SEC > Big XII

Population from wikipedia.
I don’t think I left any states out of conferences. I would guess that population will shift towards the Big XII (mostly TX) and SEC more as time goes on. Population has been shifting south and west for a quite a while. PAC 10 country will probably continue to grow as well.

Obviously this doesn't necessarily mean that there are more fans for a particular conference.
It just shows what states have conference schools. Example Florida counts for three conferences b/c of Miami & FSU (ACC), UF (SEC), USF (Big East)
