I have seen the future of our running game...

I am sure there is someone lurking on the site just ready to spring the answer on me to my question, however, I am puzzled as to why Cody Johnson is not the featured back for the Longhorns or at least #2 in a two-back system?  Now don't get me wrong.  I understand & recognize the purpose & the talent that both Fozzy, Tre, DJ, and Vondy possess.  Each one of them is a virtual clone of the other. Heck, I loved Eric Metcalf just as much as the next guy back in the day. Yet, unless someone in the Science Department at UT knows how to "Voltron-up" the four smaller backs to make one bigger one, it doesn't make sense to bring Cody out only when we are inside the ten yard line.  Almost every time he touches the ball, he produces yards & holds onto the ball; he is a much better pass blocker than Fozzy, Tre, Vondy, and DJ; he seems to bowl over players in his path; and he brings back memories of when the Longhorns use to be able to pound the ball with a burst of speed to go with his tank of a body.  The whole Jamal-era of 8 carries for nothing & one carry for 80 yards is frustrating to watch unfold in the small trifecta we have on the team at present.  Cody was a key part of the second half and was able to help with some of the pass rush of the OU defense.  Anyway, I don't mean to gripe about a huge win especially when two Top 10 schools lost.  It's just that while the defense has me salivating every time they walk onto the field, the offense is lacking.  And to me, it starts with the running game and the tools we already possess to make it better...

If you recall, Cody

was No. 1 entering sprint training. He had a minor injury, slipped back in the rotation, then ate himself out of a chance to compete for the starting job this summer. Mack Brown said recently Cody had “gotten in shape,” code for harving dropped 15 or 20 pounds, and that his opportunities would increase.

I’m with you on the change of pace he provides. I’d like to see him get 12-15 carries a game, and he was used on Saturday in non-power situations. Late in the game, just before Colt threw that awful interception (and made the TD-saving tackle), Texas had third-and-2 after a pair of Whittaker runs gained eight yards. If I’ve got Greg Davis’ headphones on my ears, I’d have lined up in the I-formation and run Cody Johnson twice (going for it on fourth-and-short, if necessary). Instead, Colt made a bad read and the defense (again) had to bail us out.

Not all that ails the running game is the coaches’ fault. Counting Cody’s weight issue, every one of the top four RBs had missed time due to physical status. Minus health, any kind of consistency is impossible. Nobody has played enough to “get good”. Again, if I’m wearing Davis’ whistle, I pick two backs and get them enough snaps, enough carries, enough catches, to begin developing consistency. Minus that, the rushing side of the attack will continue to sputter.

the thunder and lightening running back duo..

has had success in college and in NFL. I definately agree that we need more Cody Johnson and one of the speed backs like newton or fozzy as a combo rushing attack going forward.
we aren’t going to face a defense like that the rest of the regular season, and having more success rushing the football will do wonders for this offense and Colt.

I was thinking the same thing

this morning. I kept thinking back to the 2006 Rose Bowl and how the Texas defense pretty much shut down Bush with the exception of his one touch down run. But they had no answer for Lendale White. I think Mcgee can be the third down back, and try lining up Newton, Monroe, Whittaker rotating them as the feature back and line them up in a wing back or slot role to keep working with the misdirection.

The next up and coming Longhorns QB!

the future of our running game is a big ? for the next few years. Monroe, McGee, Johnson, Newton, Whaley, Fozzy all return next year and all of them will be competing for the same job and all of them bring something “different” which means all of them will see some playing time and none of them will have a 1000+ yd year

It's like a fantasy football team...

We are blessed to have so much talent and depth, but I swear some times it’s like we have too many players to choose from. When healthy, we need to pick 3-4 receivers and 2-3 running backs and start developing them. You think we are struggling on offense at times this year? Wait until sophomore Gilbert takes over a team with a rebuilt offensive line and no Jordan Shipley….

Our RB tank is loaded....

Ricky Williams had weight issues as well…..he was our fullback when he started. Cody has a lot of similiar chacteristics. I hope he gets more carrries the rest of the season and stays “in shape” over the summer. He is a bull and a bone crusher.

I'd rather you just say thank you and went on your way.

for sure

I loved that one run when he moved the pile .That’s the bulldozer in him but he also has got some shake in his legs to go right around someone.

Why is it that Marquise Goodwin seems to be able to drive through the tackles better than any non-Cody RB?

Let's not get carried away

You must not remember that catch where he just fell down when a defender touched him. Yes, he did do a great job breaking that tackle on the TD reception, but that’s the only one I remember him breaking.

flavor of the week

that is all

if this season goes like it has been, johnson will prolly start this week vs mizzou and have something like 15 carries for 33 yards or something

"We'll be baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!"

Thunder and Lightning

Is the way to go for sure, but it has to be Fozzy and Cody. Fozzy finds the seams better than any of the rest of the scat backs, and he is quicker than Vondrell and Tre. Cody finds the holes or makes his own if need be. Vondrell doesn’t have the same vision. Don’t know what to make of Tre. I would say he is in between Fozzy and Cody. He doesn’t have the speed of Fozzy, but he has more of a burst than Cody, and is probably a better blocker and more powerful runner than Fozzy. He has good vision. I could see Tre in a Ogbanayya type role. Just a solid and consistent performing running back that can hurt a defense in a lot of ways, and he goes a little unnoticed because he doesn’t have the “wow” factor of Fozzy or the Steam roll factor of Cody.
