Colt...the game manager?

Half way through the season and I can't help but ask myself and the rest of the orange faithful if this team would be better off with Colt managing the game instead of trying force plays and put up huge numbers.  Based on the play so far from this team (specifically the defense) it seems like we would be well-suited to play more ball control and take less risks on offense.  The turnovers by Colt have been killing us.  Wouldn't this team be better with a more balanced offense that plays a little more field position and relies on its defense to make plays- instead of constantly bailing out the offense?

Frankly

Colt is not looking like any kind of pro QB.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.

Very true.

He is struggling with the expectations of a great season. I was disappointed that he felt the need to say he was sick. That suggests he felt the need to justify the poor play.

I want so badly for him to succeed because he seems like such a good human being. And success doesn’t necessarily mean a national championship, it just means playing to your full capabilities. At present time, he is not.

His post game comments were a bit unnerving.

“They were bringing blitzes I have never seen in my life.”

He better get used to it, because the tone is set for how to disrupt Colt. GD needs to have 3 hot receivers on each passing play. It will take discipline and smarts to use it, but if a blitz comes from rightt side the rightt side receiver adjusts behind oncoming blitz. The middle and left side need to correspond. We could literally kill any blitz.

Another note. Have Colt start the mock snaps ala Peyton Manning, and Ryan with the Falcons last night. This tips the hand of the blitz and allows for the adjusmtents as well. Colt and the ofense looked like freshmen the way the blitzes were handled. Time to play to senior level.

blame greg davis...

as bad as colt’s nfl audition season has been so far i feel like the poor play calling has about 70% to do with his poor performances, it reminds of what sherman did to javorsky lane when he took the head coaching job at a&m, lane was a sure nfl back(he showed us his skills 2yrs in a row) if they didnt move him fb and change the way he was being utilized. Colt’s basically in the same boat, he doesnt take many snaps under center, or get the chance to throw down field much…i say greg davis is destroying any chance of colt having a personal great statistical year

All I want for Christmas is for Texas to move to the SEC and destroy those overrated chumps!!!

I have to respectfully disagree

I don’t think you can put a whole lot of the blame on Greg Davis for yesterday’s lack of offense. Yes, coaches are responsible for their offense, but at some point the players have to step up and execute. I’m talking to you oline. It wasn’t going to matter what play Greg Davis called in the first half yesterday with half of our linemen missing blocks on almost every snap. Our offensive line has not been able to dominate the line of scrimmage in any game save UTEP. Thus, McCoy is rushing through his reads, or just not looking anywhere besides his primary receiver because he knows he’s not going to have time to look elsewhere. I’ve seen people say we should’ve used more Cody Johnson, but if you remember that key third and two late in the game Greg Davis put on his O-line to block and allow Johnson to run for the first down. What happened? OU got penetration and blew the play up tackling Johnson in the backfield. We ran a power football play people. You can’t have it both ways. You can’t blame Greg Davis and say we should run more I formation when we throw an incomplete pass on 3rd and 2 and then turn around and blame Greg Davis for predictable play calling when we get stuffed in the backfield on a running play. Colt has not played as good as he did last year. I know he was frustrated yesterday when receivers were running wrong routes, but he also has to take some responsibility for the poor throws he’s had. I say all of that to say this: you can’t always blame the coordinator for every single thing that goes wrong on offense.

Key play
I’ve seen people say we should’ve used more Cody Johnson, but if you remember that key third and two late in the game Greg Davis put on his O-line to block and allow Johnson to run for the first down. What happened? OU got penetration and blew the play up tackling Johnson in the backfield.

I think you were referring to a key 3rd and 1 near the end of the 3rd quarter. You are correct that we did get stopped in the backfield, but it was Fozzy not Johnson.

It was a mistake to try to rush up to the line and hand off to Fozzy instead up subing in Johnson. Did you see how he carried half of OU’s D on his back for 6 yards on Texas’ last drive?

Oh and

I don’t think Javorskie Lane was Ever going to be a good running back at the NFL level. Sure he could run over D1 defensive players, but NFL players are a different breed of human behemoth.

We've won all of our games so far.

As long as this continues, Colt can have a passer rating of 40 for all I care
