SI's Stewart Mandel...
according to Stewart Mandel of SI, the Horns are going to be the first team to lose a game to make way for a one loss USC or undefeated Boise State/Cincinnati team to sneak into the title game. His logic is that Colt is not the same QB as last year because of the departure of Quan. He further states that as teams figure out that double teaming Shipley will create less familiarity with the rest of the receiving corp. Also, the apparent "crumbling to pieces Big 12" will do nothing to quench the thirst of the naysayers, because the team won't face a "real" tough opponent for the rest of the year, excluding the trap game at OK state. What I think Mandel fails to incorporate in his piece is that Oklahoma has the personnel to do the things that were creating confusion for Colt and the offense. I honestly do not foresee another team capable of putting that much pressure on him without giving up big plays down field. I live and die with My horns and just wanted to provide the info. and rant about the team. Maybe I have too much time on my hands.

He evidently tasted too much fried food
on the Midway this weekend. Or deadline is upon him and he had to WRITE SOMETHING.
Loss of Quan isn’t the problem. A predictable offense, poor health among the RBs and a hit-and-miss offensive line are the problems. Fix those and Colt’s back on the Heisman Express.
Quan has a littttle to do with it,
but a lot of the problems BEFORE the RRS was the vanilla play calling while Davis waited to turn the offense loose against OU (look at the QB rushes called that were absent pre-RRS) and the plays called for Malcolm Williams and Goodwin.
Also teams have been trying to shut down Shipley all season (look at the pics Colt has thrown trying to force Shipley the ball) but have been able to do it as effecively as OU.
Mandell is quilty of the nation media hyberpole that floods the web every week. These guys get paid to make predictions so they choose the most popular ones so that they dont look “stupid”
"Texas Till I Die"
honestly..
I do disagree with a few points in this article (namely that florida looks leaps and bounds ahead of us) however, generally speaking I think stew is one of the better college football writers around. he’s usually pretty level headed (as opposed to the knee-jerk-reactionaries at the mothership) and generally provides pretty solid evidence to back it up. plus he just doesn’t come off like the arrogant jerk many writers do.
I agree he's one of the few regular sports writers I'll read.
But that doesn’t mean he can’t be wrong. He underestimated (like all the media) the strength of the Horns defense in stopping a top fifty rushing team. Alabama and Florida didn’t hold worse running teams to minus yards. OU has a better defense than either South Carolina or Arkansas so why didn’t Florida and Alabama score more?
you won't hear much argument from me
that texas looks bad offensively, but lucky for us, we’re undefeated, in the driver’s seat for a spot in the ncg and have half a season to improve.

"The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated...."
The curse of the media over analyzing everything.
Florida needs a last second field goal to knock off Arkansas. Didn’t see Arkansas in the Top 25. But what a great win! And Texas gets beat up.
Boise State barely holds off freakin’ Tulsa!! 4th in the nation BCS busters! And Texas gets beat up.
USC plays a tough OOC schedule. Notre Dame! The number one team in….Lou Holtz dementia addled nation.
I say bring it. Florida or Alabama could be the ‘best team in the nation", maybe they’ll reach the status of “The Greatest College Football Team of All Time”. Sounds a bit familiar and we know how it ends. I think the more Texas gets slammed by the media, the better our chances of taking home the crystal football. Just win out and then we can watch the media backpedal so fast the chain slips.
We must be doing something right for all the hating.
Hook Em!
It's '05 all Over again and I'm digging it
Wasn’t that ’05 USC team supposed to be the greatest football team to ever put on jock straps? At one point ESPN was pitting them against pro teams. PRO TEAMS!!! LMAO. Good ol media. Always wrong, and yet always so sure.
In-VINCE-able.

what he really failed to incorporate
is that Texas’ defense is in the same class as FL and AL. And when you throw in all three teams’ total bodies of work on both sides of the ball, all three teams look very similar. Because they are in the SEC, they get credit for winning with defense. Because we are in the Big12, we get slammed for poor offense. At the end of the day, I don’t see much difference between the teams at this point.
Really? The SEC is still the God of CFB? PUH-LEEZE.
Their games have been shit this year. Florida is unGodly overrated. (You need a last-second field goal to beat Arkansas at HOME???) You only need look at Ole Miss as a perfect example of what’s wrong with sports writers and their infatuation with the SEC. What has Ole Miss done exactly? SQUAT. And yet everyone put them in their Preseason Top 10 on the basis that they’re an SEC team. Even after the school stumbled its way through the first part of the year, they still kept giving the team subsequently higher ranking until they were finally exposed in the SC game.
In-VINCE-able.
four if you ask espn.

Have you been to an SEC game in person?
The intensity and athleticism is beyond anything you see in the Big XII.
The SEC benefits from an amazing phenomenon of escalation that results in a league with the best coaches (last season there were 5 coaches with NC rings), the most rabid fanbases, and the most intensity. Trust me, it is much harder to go undefeated there than in the Big XII. Imagine having to play last year’s game in Lubbock every single week.

While I think the last sentence is a bit of an exaggeration
It is hard to argue that the SEC has not been the best conference in the BCS era. A 71% winning percentage in BCS bowl games and never losing in the BCS national championship game.
Interesting the second best conference winning percentage is the PAC 10 at 69%, but that is pretty much USC. The big 12 is 50%, and I blame OU for that. The worst conference is the ACC at a paltry 3 for 12 for 25%.
