Raw Computer BCS for 10/25
http://www.tellshowbcs.com/CP.html
So the Raw computer rankings of this week are out. And Texas is ranked number 5. The average of the polls is 6.00. Part of it is due to Jeff Sagarin's poll which has us at 14. Only one of the computers has Texas at 3, the rest are between 4 and 14.
The top 5 are
1)Iowa (avg 1.25)
2)Florida (avg 2.25)
3)Bama (avg 2.50)
4)Cinci (avg 6.50)
5)Texas (avg 6.00)
What will it take for the computer's to actually give the nod to Texas? I know that the OU game was mainly a Defense game, but so was Iowa's game this week. And the style points for Texas should have pushed them a bit higher.

Iowa is the worst #1 in history
my hope with the entire use of computers in the bcs formula is that it would compensate for idiot pollsters. instead the computers fucked us last year, and are spitting out nonsense this year.

Computers didn't screw us last year
When moron voters were voting us down as much as possible on a weekly basis it was the computers that kept us up high. We’re down in the computers this year because the Big XII is sucking quite a bit. Last year we had like half the conference in the top 25 and this year it’s basically us and Ok State as quality teams in the Big XII.

I don't agree:
“We’re down in the computers this year because the Big XII is sucking quite a bit.”
Yeah, and the BIG 10 and the BIG EAST are sooooo good, that’s why Iowa is #1 and Cincinnati is ahead of us.
The question isn’t why is Texas so low, the question is why is Iowa so high in the computers? Michigan State was 4-4. They play Indiana next week, another 4-4 team, so I expect Iowa to have another big jump when they barely squeak it out.
There are still 7 undefeated teams, you can’t tell me that Iowa is objectively (which is what the computers are supposed to be) the best of those teams. They haven’t had the toughest schedule to date and the teams they beat haven’t been great against everyone else. I guess we’ll have to start rooting against Iowa State since that’s one of the teams they beat (damn you Cornhuskers). Maybe it’s a Midwest conspiracy to make their football look relevant again.
Someone should check to see if the computer poll servers are located on the Iowa campus somewhere.

Computers don't see the score
They see wins and losses (and Billingsley’s poll is a work of fiction).
To get our ranking up, we need our beaten opponents to win more of their games. OU and Tech are all we’ve really got right now, but if we beat OSU and they don’t lose again, we should bump up a place or maybe two. Plus, Iowa can’t keep this up forever, they will lose a game. Root for OSU (if we beat them this week) and OU down the stretch (or don’t root for OU, which is fine) to bump up our computer rankings. The Big 12 has really flopped this year, so we’ll never get above number three, I don’t think, unless Florida or Alabama loses twice.

OU is ranked #21 I think
Tech is now unranked (but has votes to put them at #28 or so). To be honest, if you want to know why we are ranked so low it’s because we haven’t beat a lot of great teams. I think, should we get past the Pokes on the road, we will improve in the computers. We need Tech to crawl back in to the rankings and OU to stay there too.

None of this matters
I know I’m beating a dead horse, but none of this comes into play if we win out. The human polls make up 2/3’s of the equation and as long as we’re undefeated we’ll be ahead of both Iowa and Cincy.
So don’t get caught up in the computers because if we win out we’re in, and if we lose we have no chance. It’s all pretty easy this year.

We have only ourselves to blame
We can mourn OU’s losses to BYU and Miami and Tech’s loss to UH, but mainly we can thank Dodds and/or Brown who scheduled the likes of UTEP, Wyoming, La-Monroe, and Central Florida. If it comes down to SOS, we are screwed. And if didn’t help that we scored only 6 points in the second half against Missouri.

So if it does not come down to SOS we should congragulate Dodds and/or Brown
for their strategy, right?
It is much more likely that it will come down to record, so you will be appreciative of them if we make the MNC right?

Yes, but...
I’ll admit this issue has been beaten to death on this blog the last few years. However, I will re-state my position. I think (1) if you are going to claim to be the best in the country, if you really believe UT is the best, you should be willing to play the best and prove it on the field. I am not saying we should schedule USC, Ohio State, and Florida in the same season but on the other hand, we should not be scheduling UTEP, Central Florda, LA-Monroe, and the Northeast Idaho States of the world either. (2) If you are going to charge $80 or so a ticket, the fans desevre something better that LA-Monroe and UTEP. (3) among several undefeated or several one-loss teams, the one with the greater SOS will likely finish higher in the BSC standing, (4) do you really want someone to be able to say well, UT made it to the MNC game because they didn’t play any strong competition? and (5) how does playing UTEP, Rice, and LA-Monroe prepare you to play Alabama or Florida and the like?

Well
1. If that is your logic, then you should be trying to schedule USC, Ohio State, and Florida in the same season, so you can beat the best, right?
2. This point is not really germane to this debate, but this is the reason I think we should schedule better teams, and I am willing to take the slightly lower chance of a MNC birth for it, but no rationale coach would say the same, as long as he is talking off the record.
3. This is true, but I don’t think that the chance that an increase in SOS will help you out weighs the reduction in chance of going undefeated.
4. I think going undefeated in the Big 12, especially if you are in the South Division, is enough of a counterargument to whoever this someone is.
5. I don’t really think that playing someone stronger in week 1 – 3 will have any bearing on how a team will perform at a bowl game. Maybe for the OU game this has some bearing, but again I don’t think this slight increase outweighs the decrease in the team’s chances of going undefeated.

If we win out...
It used to be that a team was seldom jumped in the polls so long as it won, no matter how ugly. Now that is no longer the case. Note that Alabama passed us a couple of weeks ago. How do you know that Iowa or TCU or Cinn. etc. won’t pass us if we struggle in our last several games?

How do you know that the ACC champion wont win in such a convincing fashion
that all of the pollsters decide to jump them to #1 and they go instead of a undefeated team? You don’t, because no matter how highly unlikely, you can predict the future with absolute certainty. So you look at past precedents, and the only time an undefeated BCS team was left out of the MNC was when three BCS teams were undefeated, and the one time that did happen the team that started the year in the #1 and #2 positions where the ones who made the MNC. Where did Texas start the year again?

And the computers can't even see that....
Michigan State basically handed Iowa the winning score with the DB giving the X receiver the slant without help to the inside.

Not that it is completely relevant
but “Dodds and/or Brown” DID plan a better SoS with games against Utah and Arkansas, lest we forget. They douched out, and left us with such sweet additions as UTEP and ULL. I don’t think that fact is escaping the minds of the experts… unfortunately, a lot of the voters can’t really claim that kind of title.
