DeMarco Cobbs Switches From One UT to the Other ($)
In a strange turn of events, Tulsa Central wide receiver DeMarco Cobbs, an early target for the Longhorns who repeatedly failed to make it to campus, switched his commitment to the Longhorns on Thursday evening.
Early in the process, Cobbs indicated that Texas was his first choice, but lost contact with the coaching staff as four other receivers committed to the Longhorns and Texas appeared in good shape with Darius White, who has since lost interest.
At his high school, Cobbs does pretty much everything for his team, playing some quarterback, wide receiver, defense, and excelling on special teams -- at Texas he will almost certainly play wide receiver, where he will probably be a bit raw and doesn't have great explosiveness, but he's a strong, fast kid some have compared to Michael Crabtree. Great pick up for the Longhorns, but this development probably eliminates any chance of Darius White coming to Texas. Oh well.
Further thoughts later.

As far as White goes
Do you think he is closing the door or are we? I know we have a full haul coming in as far as the WR position goes, but wouldn’t we hold the door open for an elite talent like him? Or is this a case of White is probably done with us because of the competition in the class among his other complains about us?

White more likely done with Texas.
As recently as the end of September, four Texas assistant coaches, including Major Applewhite and Bobby Kennedy, went to see White play at Dunbar, but ended up seeing Arlington Heights receiver Marquis Jackson put on a show and lock down White pretty well. So the interest has been there from Texas recently.
White has obviously been an OU lean for some time now, with his experience at the spring game reportedly the major reason for him dropping the Longhorns down his list. He felt his childhood buddy Rashod Favors was disrespected by the Texas staff and there are also rumors that he didn’t like the fact that everyone thought he was a Texas lock early. Honestly, Oklahoma is probably a better situation for him, as there is much less competition on the depth chart, as opposed to Texas, which has a ton of big-bodied receivers.
With four receivers in this class now, including Darius Terrell, it’s hard to see the Longhorns still taking another receiver at this point, but I think if White wants to come to Texas he still has a spot. After all, White was still a target when Ross Apo was a Texas commitment back in the spring.

Any talk about maybe moving
Cobbs to FS and keep after White?

Possibility
He plays some defense and has the speed, size, and strength to be an excellent safety or spread outside linebacker.

Thanks for the info, GOBR
This is certainly out of left field, at least from the perspective of a casual observer of recruiting. I wonder what kind of sh** talk Kiffin will have about us now that we picked off one of this guys.
I’m an AHHS alum, what’s the story on Marquis Jackson? I see a lot about him in the papers, but haven’t heard much buzz from a recruiting perspective regarding this kid.

Haven't seen any film on him.
But from the reports he is strong and fast and a good runner, as they use him as the trigger man in their Wildcat formation. Love what I’ve heard about him so far.

If you were D. White...
… would you relish the thought of going up against a Muschamp D your entire career? Guess it depends on how much of an ego you have. If you get shut down for 4 straight years by an elite caliber D but have gaudy numbers against every other opponent on the schedule is that good enough?
I think I’d rather PRACTICE against a Muschamp D and catch passes from the likes of Garrett Gilbert in games, but then I’m a lazy old dude who never played the game so what do I know?

I'm shocked
I can’t wait to read the story on how this all played all out. I had not seen his name mentioned in a long time.

How about that.
Texas got a commitment from the #1 player in OK that’s a nice switch.

Nice Pickup
Hopefully Cobbs will be what we thought Chiles would be. No disrespect to Chiles, but he hasn’t exactly lit it up like he was projected too. He has mainly just been average, imo. Any good pickup by the coaches. Come on down Hicks and Jeffcoat. This class is awesome already. We pickup Hicks and/or Jeffcoat, and it would have to get consideration as Mack’s best class ever.

Chiles vs. Cobbs
Cobbs has much, much better feet and better explosiveness. I think the Longhorns get Cobbs involved in the screen and short passing game and he actually makes some people miss. There’s a reason people think he can play running back.

more explosive?
Not sure I’d say Cobbs is more explosive than Chiles.

I would, so it's a wash.

I've never seen Cobbs
in person so I couldn’t make that assesment. Perhaps you have. Both their h.s. tapes look similiar.

What has led you to believe that he may not be as explosive?
Sounds like an assessment in there somewhere, no?

Best class will be realized after the games and seasons have been played.
The best haul is still the one with VY.

Holy cow!!!!
Was there even a hint of this? If so, it flew past me.
Great pickup. Who was involved in the recruiting?
by edsp on Oct 30, 2009 12:25 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
No hint.
At least nothing public. Bruce Chambers was the lead recruiter with Cobbs and began communicating with Cobbs again several weeks ago.

This is great to hear
Kind of out of the blue, and because it was such a quick turn of events it would not surprise me to see something change still with his commitment.
But if he sticks it out, will love having him on campus!

Welcome to the herd Cobbs...
But for some reason I feel that he will change his mind again.
None suck more than OU!

So this is what it feels like
to nab top talent out of Bob Stoops’ backyard.
I wonder if people will have the same positive reaction if Darius White or LS switch to Texas…

4.76 forty
I think it’s kind of refreshing for a player to report what seems like it would be his actual time. The whole saying you’re a 4.4 guy just because you’re faster than everyone else on the field is soo played.
Anyways, the way we had been spurned by this guy early on I honestly thought the headline was suggesting he’d be switching to the University of Toledo.
Oh well, it’s good to get a quality receiver.

If His True Speed is 4.76 - He should have signed with University of Toledo
How will he crack the Texas lineup with all the 4.4s we have?
by realmccoy on Oct 30, 2009 12:24 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'll take him as a replacement for the Apo loss...
Though I if I had a choice I guess I would have rather we held onto Dixon, who despite our depth at DB seems more ready-to-play. I hope Cobbs turns into a beast for us, though I suppose I should just hope we get his signature in February first!

Interesting. Thanks for the info GBR.
Who has the best track record of the recruiting services? Rivals has Cobbs in the 150 range with a 5.8 four star ranking. Scout he has 5 stars and is the 39th player and on espn he’s a high 4 star and the 17th best player in the country.
So it looks like he ranges from elite to a great player.

Don’t know which service has been the most consistent over time but with Gerry Hamilton over at ESPN now, their reporting (at least as it effects our area) has improved.
Personally I think Gerry is one of the very best in the biz.

I believe Rivals has the best track record.
I think Matt Hinton did a study comparing the services, but I have to get started do my write up on Cobbs so I don’t care to find it right now.
by GhostofBigRoy on Oct 30, 2009 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Latest Ranking Had Cobbs at 120 Also
That gives the Horns 14 signees in the top 250 of Rivals vs. the Sooners 8. I guess to be fair they will prolly close the gap some – as we probably are capped at 15 and that’s if we get either Hicks or Jeffcoat. I would still put our chances below 50% on each target. I think USC has the edge for Jeffcoat and still give the Buckeys slight edge for Hicks.

The ESPN bit about Cobb noted that Florida and UT are seen as the leaders for Hicks...
I have no idea if this is true and it seems odd, but that is what they are saying…

What does this mean for Sasser?
I noticed on Rock M Nation that Sasser says he is down to Missouri and Kansas. We aren’t even on his favs list, though I don’t think we ever were. Is he down to those two only or would he keep things open if we formally offered? Even taking Cobb as an ATH may not make a difference to a guy like Sasser who may feel the writing is on the wall with regards to us offering him a scholly.
by Rickyspub on Oct 30, 2009 1:15 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Probably off the radar.
He hasn’t been offered and probably won’t be now.
