Upset Special: UNC Steals 20-17 Win From Va. Tech In Blacksburg - SB Nation
Just a quick note that Jeff Sagarin's #3 team (including MOV) went down tonight. At home. To a team that lost 16-3 in their home stadium to Al Groh.
Read: don't worry much about the computers just yet -- the more data they have, the more useful they become. At this point, most of them are like pure-resume ballots -- only marginally useful/insightful.
Just pray for Texas to keep winning. That's what matters.

I still maintain that tough OOC games in September don't do anything but put you closer to a loss...
I have yet to see anyone supply any evidence that playing teams at the level of Alabama or VT help that team in anyway as the season progresses. Sure it helps with the computers, but when a loss is potentially the one and only nail in your chance for the national title, I just don’t see the upside with the current system in place. Teams that play tough OOC games don’t seem to end up in the MNC game anymore often than teams that don’t and the cliche that, win or lose, it helps you better prepare for conference just doesn’t seem to consistently play out in the real world.
I am all for seeing great match ups between regional powers, though I would much rather see them occur in December during a playoff than in September or in meaningless bowl games, but I don’t see any reason to knock Mack or Deloss, like others are so quick to do, for understanding the current system mostly punishes you for playing tough OOC games and the benefits for the team’s progress by playing such games is greatly overrated.

In this BCS system.....
There is absolutely no reason to schedule tough OOC games. Look at Florida’s schedule for it’s run for championships with Tebow as a vivid example. They have won 2 of the last 3 championships and have yet to leave the state of Florida for an OOC game. Florida has barely left the Swamp to play any of its OOC games and no one seems to criticize them much.

Yep...if the system changed and SOS was extremely important I would complain about our schedule....
Or if there were a playoff and we knew winning the conference was enough to get there, I might prefer to see us face some top opponents for entertainment value. In the end, other than entertainment, I can’t see any football or championship rationale for playing top-tier programs in September. Playing patsies allows you to get young guys on the field to test their mettle, it generally keeps you healthier, and it allows you to hide or tinker with your playbook before conference play.
USC generally proves that playing a touch OOC slate is no guarantee you won’t shit the bed against one of your weaker sisters…in fact, their troubles may stem from the fact that they play too many high-stress games in September and lose their focus against weaker, but highly motivated and informed, competition in October. I think the two years they made it to the championship game they actually played lower numbers of ranked teams than in years when they didn’t make it.
The reality is you need to game the system by trying to schedule the Vanderbilts, Dukes, and Iowa States of the world. They give you cred with the computers while not greatly increasing the likelihood of a loss. The problem is that they too want to get to bowl games and their only shot is by scheduling four patsies in their OOC slate. That is why I liked having Arkansas on the slate. While there was always the risk they might be better than advertised we should generally have the advantage, the fact that they are long time rivals made it see unlikely they would try to dodge us…boy, I was wrong there.

This game should certainly have a big impact on this stat of the day.

In Addition
From the looks of that game – it did not have the feel of an upset. The Heels were just flat out better. I think VT may be among the most overrated teams in the nation. If that is true – what does it tell us about Alabama’s “signature win”.

VT proved to be overrated in the second half of the season? So, the same thing as almost every year.

Its tough to win when you dont have an offense
VT’s defense is good, almost always, and that probably gives them more respect (and wins) then the team deserves.
Their offense has been down right terrible for years though. Your D can win you a lot of games, or as we like to say, keep you in a lot of games, which then make them winnable. VT seems to fail exclusively due to lack of offense.
Anyway, I guess my point is, they are overrated, but its because their D makes any game possibly a win for VT, which is worthwhile. After big Willie Style Bud Foster would be my choice for favorite D-coordinator.

Va Tech is almost a mirror universe version of Texas Tech
Because of their defense and special teams they can win any game on any week, but the utter lack of of offense ensures that they’re never as “elite” as they seem like they should be.

Interesting Point
Have you seen Beamer and Leach together at any one time? Could be a Jekyll Hyde alter ego situation.

Funny how true this is
and yet, V-Tech gets way more respect nationally than Tx-Tech. Could be that he has done it more consistently for longer, or that compared to the rest of his conference, he looks better, or just that people respect great defense more than great offense.

This win's going to help us in the computers
Takes one team out from ahead of us, and hurts Alabama’s SoS somewhat.

VT may have been overrated, but UNC was at least equally underrated
Yates has a great set of targets, and all he needed was a little bit better play from that interior line. It didn’t hurt to have a good pair of backs both healthy and pounding the defense, because that’s really how UNC wore down the VT DL and made it easier for Yates to put together the scoring drives. The defense has good personnel, too. Butch Davis has done a pretty good job, and the 0-3 conference start was definitely underachievement for the type of personnel they have. This win was more like how UNC should be playing.
