Saturday Bye Week Afternoon Open Thread
Not a ton of good early afternoon games (though Kentucky is giving Alabama a game in the first half so far), but they pick up at 2:30 with Georgia vs. LSU, Jake Locker vs. Notre Dame, and, uh, Florida State at BC? Really that's all we got? Oh well, at least the night games are good. Comment away, and enjoy the bye week.

Greg McElroy is looking like an SEC quarterback this week.
3 of 8 for 4 yards. It’s gotta be that stout Kentucky defense that gave up 41 points to Florida and 27 to Louisville!
Upset Alert: Alabama - Kentucky
Alabama went up 7-0 before the game even started, but they’re only up 7-6 now. Alabama went 3 and out their last 6 possessions.

I don't think so.
Maybe on Fox Sports regional coverage. But here in NYC, I’m currently getting Sacred Heart at Central Connecticut State. I wish I was kidding. One side of the field doesn’t have bleachers. It’s just a soccer field behind the sideline. It’s smaller than my high school stadium. By a lot.
Isn't Sacred Heart the hospital from Scrubs?
I didn’t know they had a football team. They must really suck if Zach Braff plays.
That's nice.
I’m getting NY Islanders coverage after this game. But I think I can get by just watching LSU/Georgia at 3:30.
that is criminal...seriously

I've got it on one of the other channels.
NY has like 14 local sports channels and on Saturdays when the pro sports teams aren’t playing, they pick up random college football games. Usually I get a Big 12 game and a bunch of sub-D1 games/Big East games. This week, I was lucky to get the Bama/Kentucky game, but didn’t get any Big 12 games. It’ll hold me over until the 3:30 national games.
Made this comment last week during the UT game thread . . .
and it probably got lost.
What a suckee job the Big 12 has done with its TV contract. I’m in Houston and I get more Big Ten and SEC games than I do Big 12. It’s easier to see Purdue than it is the Aggies, Kentucky than Nebraska.
I understand it’s dollars, and viewing windows, and the schools are involved and all of that. But it seems to me the Big 12 is letting two major rival conferences get a ton of TV exposure in markets that ought to offer Big 12 alternatives. I’m no Aggie fan, and I know they were 4-8 last year, but I haven’t seen an Aggie game yet this season. (Today’s is on, of course.)
It’s too late for the Big 12 to become bedfellows with ESPN (the SEC got that), but the league NEEDS to start its own network and aggressively market games onto low-budget, non-network TV stations in Houston, Dallas, OKC, St. Louis, Denver, etc.

Part of it is the product the Big 12 puts out on the field.
Name one Big 12 game this week that you want to see (OOC games with the Big 12 team on the road don’t fall under the Big 12 TV contract). There was a decent article over at Barking Carnival about this issue: here. The best Big 12 game this week is 0-4 New Mexico at Texas Tech. No one wants to televise these Big 12 games because no one wants to watch them.
Dont you think A&M Ark is a bit better than TT NM??? Im just sayin'

Doesn't count as a Big 12 game because Arkansas is technically the home team.
So its not under the purview of the Big 12 TV contract.

Understand all this
and I’m not referring to this week; too many teams off this week.
I’m not saying Ch. 55 in Houston shouldn’t show SEC games; I’m glad they had LSU-Miss. St. last week — but because the Big 12 has no network, that station had no Big 12 game to choose from. They showed Big Ten Network the last year or two, replaced that with SEC.
Don’t know what other cities/cable operations have available channel-wise, but the larger cities have stations showing ’70s sitcom reruns and informercials and canned programming of the lowest level; Aggies, Baylor, Kansas, Nebraska games could go on instead — if those were available.
Just saying’ — gonna be harder for Michigan and Alabama to recruit in Texas if their TV appearances don’t outnumber those of Texas universities.
The problem is that the conference doesn’t seem to work with the teams much. This could involve setting a conference standard that outlines a maximum number of FCS/Div.II opponent, maximum non-BCS opponents (exceptions could be made for teams like Utah or Boise State if scheduled when that team has recently achieved a certain ranking) a school can play each season. This could also be incentivized (a bigger share of the pie for scheduling higher-quality opponents) instead of enforced punitively.
Perhaps more realistically, the conference could work with the schools to arrange so that non-conference matchups of any consequence (Iowa-Iowa State, Missouri-Illinois, Texas/a2m-Ark, etc.) don’t all fall in the same week, so those could serve as the non-conference games that would boost the overall product in weeks like this one. There are twelve teams; there’s no excuse for there being zero home BCS vs. BCS games for the conference this week. Instead, require conference coordination to make sure that, for instance, the CU-WV series alternates with the OUsucks-Miami series such that it’s CU@WV and Miami@OUsucks one year, and WV@CU and OUsucks@Miami the next.

Yes, but they wouldn't have been if Mackovic was still producing 7-4 teams
My point isn’t about Texas; as a perennial Top 10 team, Texas is on a lot of places and most of the time. It’s not about seeing Ohio State and Penn State and Georgia . . . it’s about seeing Northwestern and South Carolina and NOT SEEING many Baylor and Kansas and A&M games.
Granted, it gets better with the Astros out of the way (FSN ties up 1-2 time blocks weekly that could go to Big 12 games). But there are station/cable alternatives; without a Big 12 network, way too many games don’t get shown in markets that would benefit Big 12 members and their followers.

UVA looks like they’re going to run away from UNC at UNC. UVA might not be able to beat anyone else, but they’ve won something like 8 out of 9 against UNC.
That has to be really embarrassing, losing to the team that lost to William and Mary. W&M isn’t bad for their level of competition, but man, UVA really sucks this year.

I really don’t want to like Forcier. I really don’t. But the kid is absolutely pumping icewater through his veins when he’s running the 2min. drill. He may or may not tie up this game against Michigan State, but seriously, he’s escaping, inventing, scrambling, and generally carrying his team to another potential comeback.
Great player so far.
And Forcier leads the comeback
Looks like this is going to OT

The Northwestern-Purdue finish is looking pretty exciting as well. Purdue was up big, the momentum turned on a thrown pick by Elliott from his own 2, NU took the lead with a couple minutes left, and Purdue has brought it back down to the NU 4 with 15sec. remaining. 3rd and goal.
Damn, came up short. NU takes over on downs with 3sec. left.

Nick Saban is classy like Vegas. Nothing like having your punter fake it to keep that critical drive alive when you’re up three scores with 3:30 remaining.
And then he goes for it again, attempting to pass the ball for a touchdown with about a minute to go.

I'll put one up for the night games, sure.
Some good ones tonight. In addition to Miami/OU, there’s Cal/USC, Auburn/Tennessee and A&M/Arkansas. Solid slate. I wish one of them had been on at noon and another now so I could watch them all. Going to be some furious channel flipping, laptop watching, and picture-in-picturing going on.
Tech and New Mexico tied
Can we all agree that if Tech has any kind of lead with 0:01 left before halftime, it will be perfectly acceptable for their fans to rush the field? Twice?

Watching LSU lead UGA 6-0 at halftime is worse than pulling teeth. Penn St. vs Illinois is just as bad, and FSN doesnt have Tech on because the shitty Astros are in a rain delay. At least Whisky vs Minny Soda was decent enough to watch.

I think it was a bit too early to definitely go for 3 there.
Different than Mike Leach’s gamble. You have jake locker on the 6 inch line and a 5 point lead, I think that was a good call to try and make it 2 scores. Debatable, certainly.
Guess that’s true. I had flipped away to another game for a sec, and for some reason I was thinking it was further into the game.
by burntorangehorn on Oct 3, 2009 5:36 PM CDT up reply actions
Same thing for the Huskies
Why would they go for 4th and goal with more than a whole quarter left???
4th and 6 inches is different than any old 4th and goal.
It’s debatable, but I think the odds are in favor of going for it being the better play. If you get that 2/3 of the time (which I bet is about right), then the possibility of going up 12 with a quarter to go to me outweighs the definite going up 8 with a quarter to go.
Oh, my bad, I didn't know it was 6 inches that short
But now they lost the game. If they kick that FG, Irish may not have a chance for OT. Anyway, Huskies has their chance to put this game away.
hindsight's certainly 20/20.
Probably the wrong call in retrospect, but I thought it was a good call at the time.
2nd time Shepard came on for a quick play
and LSU had to call a timeout. Is he a little slow upstairs? I know he’s fast downstairs.

Really impressed with the UW running back.
Either that or ND’s tackling is god awful. Maybe a bit of both.
He’s a solid back. UW lost both him and Locker for most of last season, and that’s the main reason they were so putrid.
He’s definitely a talent. The line isn’t blocking that well, but he’s been breaking some tackles the whole season.

Ugh, bad review by the refs. He had the ball in his right arm, and it looks like it broke the plane. I could understand if they had originally called it down before the goal line, but they called it a touchdown, and there was nowhere near enough evidence to overturn whatever the on-field call was.

They need the 2 point conversion here to make sure a FG doesn't beat them.

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!
UW’s running play after play at or near the goal line, and ends up down inside the 1 every damn time.
They had one play that looked like a touchdown, but the refs took it off the board after the review. Said the runner’s knee was down.
They just did about their 10th Locker sneak inside the 1, and it failed, so they’re kicking the FG on 4th down.

No, LSU will not jump us if they beat Florida
LSU has been lucky to be undefeated so far this year. They should of lost to Mississippi State and Georgia. They have the 105th ranked offense in the country. Nothing that deserves a #1 ranking in my mind. Anyway, I don’t think they will beat Florida.
And it wouldn’t matter either way, because Florida would drop. It takes being ranked in the top two in the BCS to go to the big game, and only one out of UF, LSU, and ’Bama can go undefeated.

I think he's actually pretty underrated.
Everyone thinks he’s pretty terrible, but he’s actually pretty decent. You miss that 2-minute drill he ran to take the lead?
Did you miss his first two years at QB?
Washington was win less last year also. Sure, they are improved but still nothing to write home about.
But most people think he's great.
I don’t know why you seem to think most people think he’s terrible. He’s number 2 on Sports Illustrated’s heisman list.
ND was terrible on the whole the last two years
Clausen missed games his freshman year because he was sacked so many times. Not any particular injury, he was just too beat up to play because his O-line was that bad. And last year if their defense was better they would have been 9-3. He is clearly poised enough to lead his team to wins and is statistically one of the best QB’s in the country.
