With all USC.....

….. lost to the NFL, my only surprize is that it took this long.

Our defense played a dominating game last night!

One of the best wins we've had

nothing feels better than completely demoralizing a team on the road. Especially a quality ranked team playing the “biggest game of their history” in front of a sell-out crowd on prime time national TV.

I guess, but they haven't even played Utah yet

So the Utah game shouldn’t even be a consideration. Plus, Oregon’s a tougher team than either. One game against a second-tier team like Oregon should weigh more heavily than two games against BYU.

by burntorangehorn on Oct 31, 2009 10:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh I agree with you, I'm just stating what I've heard.

However, in a pure power poll, I like TCU’s defense to dominate Boise State. And TCU’s offense isn’t bad either.

by HornPossessed on Oct 31, 2009 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd pick the home team if either were playing at the other's house

But in a neutral matchup, fully healthy, I’m taking Boise by a touchdown.

by burntorangehorn on Oct 31, 2009 10:37 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll e-fight to the death over this!

But I haven’t watched either enough to make a truly informed decision. My Texas bias is what really picks TCU > Boise. I’d love to see that game again this year.

by HornPossessed on Oct 31, 2009 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Understood

I really thought about attending TCU, because the track coach was great and all. I liked the school, the people, and everything. But when evaluating objectively, I have to rid myself of regional bias.

Admittedly, it’s probably easier for someone in Maryland.

I guess the only major complaint is

what happened to our running game? Colt McCoy leading the team in carries and rushing yards is sooo last season.

The same K-state team that made whipping boys out of the Agros? And we all know how well Texas seems to play against the manhattan boys (the only big 12 team we have a losing record against). I don’t think either of those games are a shoo in. Strange things can happen in College Station as well as the B12 Championship Game. BTW where is that being held this year?

Maybe it looked different on TV but...

In the stands, the offense looked pretty good. Colt was 16-21, over 10 yards a completion, a touchdown, and no picks. Granted the run game did not rack up yardage but they really did not give it a chance to with all the 4- and 5-wide sets. I sat in the OSU student section and they were moaning and whining about their D not being able to stop us the entire game. Of course, the air went out of the stadium on Curtis Brown’s pick, but the amazing Malcolm Williams TD catch at the end of the half was the death knell for the OSU fans.

Obviously

our offensive coordinator is a moron. Seriously, he has obviously not been as spectacular in practice as he has been in games. Plus, early on in the season he dropped several easy catches that will not fly in this offense.

by aaronlybrand on Nov 1, 2009 6:17 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with this

The kid has done a number of things in the past that gave the coaches good reason to not trust him on offense, but I’m proud to see that he didn’t show any of that last night. He played like a true starter, not just a role-player. If he can keep that up, UT might have to find a new special teams ace.

Maybe the ones you were around...

but everyone was telling me “Good game” when I was leaving the stadium. Some of my friends complained a little about the refs but when I asked which call they were complaining about, they could not name a specific one. One did say something about the strip on the forward progress call, but once I explained the rule and agreed it MIGHT have been a quick whistle, he dropped it. The OSU fan base is just so beat down that they expect this by now, haha. And I am not meaning to pick on you Horns98!

by OminousPolaris on Nov 1, 2009 1:32 AM CDT up reply actions

You're cool.

I know you didn’t meant that, OP.

by Horns98 on Nov 1, 2009 10:41 AM CST up reply actions

While not a credible excuse for the loss

the officials were definitely on our side tonight. The forward progress call was suspicious, particularly considering the timing of it; as it potentially made the difference between a 24-7 halftime lead or just a 17-14 lead. It was a pivotal moment, and I thought it was a bad call. But there was also the personal foul call on the OSU db who pummeled Buckner in the first half, which I thought was pretty ridiculous (I mean, this is football right?).

Because of the final score, these calls will be overlooked, but I suspect fans from other conferences would accuse the Big XII of protecting its prize pony the same way we’ve been accusing the SEC of protecting Florida and Alabama, and the Big Ten of protecting Iowa (at least this morning).

by BrooklynHorn on Nov 1, 2009 1:51 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think the Buckner call was ridiculous

You can argue about if the helmet to helmet increased enforcement is a bit overblown, but the refs on the field can only call by the rules they are given and this year a tackle with initial contact helmet to helmet is a personal foul.

The forward progress on the other hand was a horrible call.

by Wells on Nov 1, 2009 6:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Meh. Some good, some bad.

The unnecessary roughness call was a bad one as he led with his shoulder into Buckner’s chest, but you see one of those calls once a game it seems like.

The strip of Kirkendoll was a bad call because his forward progress had not really been stopped. But the refs were correct that once they blow a play dead for forward progress, it’s not reviewable. Their only mistake was perhaps blowing the play dead too early.

However, the call on the Shipley catch interference went against us and it was a bad one. The guy that actually got pushed from behind (the reason they waived off the flag) was not the guy that hit Shipley early. He stumbled and did his best to avoid Ship while the other guy came barreling into him. It was a bad call and cost us a turnover.

There weren’t really any other bad call that I remember. The Johnson TD was pretty clearly over the line and the cameras had a perfect down-the-line look at it.

by billyzane on Nov 1, 2009 7:01 AM CST up reply actions

Um, vague rule.

The “halo” rule was abolished because it gave an advantage to the receiver. The new rule states that if the receiver of free kick muffs the ball then there is no interference. Black and white. Typical governing body move….reverse the advantage.

Interference With Opportunity—ARTICLE 1
Approved Ruling 6-4-1

I. A Team A player catches a free kick very near receiver B25, thus preventing him from making the catch. RULING: Illegal interference. Penalty—15 yards from the spot of the foul.

II. A Team B player, about to catch a kick, is tackled before the ball arrives but catches the kick while he is falling. RULING: Illegal interference. Penalty—15 yards from the spot of the foul. Disqualification of the Team A player if the contact is flagrant.

IV. A player of Team B, attempting to catch a kick (no fair catch signal), muffs the ball which is then touched by an opponent who was not interfering with the opportunity of the receiver when he was in position to make the catch. RULING: Not interference. Protection against interference with the opportunity to catch a kick ends when any player of Team B muffs the ball.

The problem on the muff punt was the lack of blocking on the OSU gunners. Poor punt coverage performance on the play. Akina will be wearing them out this week for that play.

"We don't freestyle Texas Fight, big boy." - Coach Brown

by TXStampede on Nov 1, 2009 7:28 AM CST up reply actions

Not what I'm talking about.

The refs said there was interference along the lines of number II above. There was no confusion about that (among the refs anyway). They waived off the flag because they said that he was blocked into Shipley by a Texas player. But on the replay it was clear that there were two OSU players there and the one that was blocked into Shipley’s vicinity was not the one that actually hit Shipley early. That guy was unblocked and his Ship of his own volition. That’s why it was a bad call.

Praise and Concern

Praise for:
1. Texas Defense. With the exception of one drive, the defense was fantastic. We saw a lot of four-man rush, drop seven. Texas didn’t need to dip into the well of exotic looks because the pressure on Robinson was good enough, and the secondary, save for a muffed play or two, was excellent. Four picks by four different defensive backs is an impressive feat regardless of the opponent. OSU was forced to abandon the run because, save for the one good drive, Texas snuffed it out. When OSU began relying more on the run, Texas took the ball away. It was nice to hear the commentators and the post-game pundits talk about Texas’ defense. Muschamp has these guys prepared for battle every week, the young secondary have grown up and learned to catch in the process, and the D line and LBs force opponents to pass. It’s beautiful to watch.

2. Curtis Brown. The light has resoundingly switched on. He was featured in an AAS article earlier this week. His grasp of the defense and his responsibilities have caught up with his physical gifts, and we saw it come together tonight with that fantastic 70-ish yard INT return and almost second pick near the end.

3. Colt to Shipley. When the game was close, this reliable duo hooked up. And how about Shipley on that ridiculous falling away catch.

4. Malcolm Williams. He continues to excel in punt coverage, and I believe he has regained Colt’s trust. The TD catch demonstrates that he CAN catch in tenuous situations, and the quasi-jump ball catch in the second half reinforced his big play potential.

5. Hunter Lawerence. He was arguably the MVP against OU, and he was good again tonight. He’s nearly automatic.

Concerns about:
1. Offensive line. They still lack the arrogance and ruthlessness of the Studdard/Sendlein/Blalock group (yes, i realize those guys were incredibly talented). But Colt is pressured a lot. He was sacked or stopped for very short gains on a couple of occasions when OSU was only rushing three. The run game also suffered when OSU interior D line was able to penetrate. I don’t have the football background to declare specific flaws, but I can see enough to realize that the O Line flaws could come back to haunt Texas in closer games. Some of Colt’s problems this year stem from the anxiety of quickly collapsing pockets.

2. Stalled drives. I won’t attempt to diagnose the cause of this one, but this has been an issue this year. I was disappointed when Texas didn’t get a TD after the big Williams catch. I’m irrational, too, so I expect TDs on every possession. We’re seeing a lot of 2nd/3rd and longs — a central ingredient to a stalled drive. Texas hasn’t been able to sustain drives as well as last year’s team. If the defense has an off night, I can’t trust Texas to out score an opponent. It’s tough to complain about anything after this beautiful beatdown of Poke U, but there’s a little restless voice in the back of my head.

Overall, awesome game for a Texas fan. I feel like the center of this team is the defense. There’s a fire about these guys. The team looks loose, but unforgiving (especially the defense). These guys value small victories, like a WR making a good block or neutralizing kick returns. Unlike the past two or three seasons, I don’t find myself scratching my head thinking — why is that guy still on the field. This team looks amazing (O line is perhaps the weak link if I have to name one —but still, overall they’re good). I’m so psyched for the rest of conference play, and I expect the Horns to play in and win the national championship game.

Praise: 6. Kevin Durant on the Sideline.

Feeling Good...

This was an awesome COMPLETE win. Our D is killer, and our offense is very good and has the ability to be great. I think our D may be be tter this year than the 2005/06 squad due to Muschmap’s scheming… talent wise they are not quite there yet, with acouple of exceptions (Kindle and Thomas) but the schemes are awesome. McCoy is looking awesome too, and I am so happy for him and Shipley getting on track. It is a good day to be a Horn’s fan.

Nothing definitive yet reported.

He dinged his knee on the long TD breakup by ET on OSU’s first drive. ET inadvertently kneed AW’s left knee (behind) on the bang-bang breakup. Even ET went to the sideline gimping. Hopefully with some treatment and rest next week he’ll be back up and running. No need to rush him back in at this point.

Awesome DB play

For a few years now, the DBs have been the bane of the defense’s existence. Every pass play made my gut drop.

This year, at last, these guys are money. Fantastic. Until today, Robinson had only 3 picks all year. Tonight, our DBs stole 4 from him, including two that went for 6.

How’s that for a welcome turnaround!
