My question is:
How did she still get a D in one of those courses if she had stopped going to class altogether?

Why does A&M let you drop 3 failing grades?
That seems a bit much.

Why should you be able to drop one?
Colorado had a policy that you could retake up to 3 classes and replace the bad grade with a better one, but just dropping three seems like cheating.

I've heard UT had a policy where you could retake a class
if you got a D and they would average the two grades. Not sure if it is true.

Most schools seem to allow a student to re-take a class at the same university and cover up the previous grade, but will only average out the grade of a class re-taken at a different school (community college or whatever).

This is true.
But think about it. Taking a class twice and having it on your transcript twice is the same as having the average of the grades you made both times you took the class.

The worst of it is
it sounds like the adviser did have her best interest in mind, and further, she sounds like an idiot. I sincerely hope her lawsuit is unsuccessful.

I heard on the radio that at Sam Houston St.
You can drop a class without any consequence (other than wasting tuition money), as late as the final day of class! At least A&M’s thing is just for freshmen.

Yes, with limits
My brother teachers at SHSU. He said you can drop after the official drop date until the last day before finals without an academic penalty (standard Q drop thing where it still shows up on your transcript), but you can only do it 5 times during your undergrad career. Beyond that, you can’t drop after the drop date unless you meet certain requirements (you have to be passing the class and you have to have some special circumstance that prevents you from finishing). Still BS for a 4-year school, but at least they limit the number of times you can do it.
I don’t remember if UT has a limit on Q drops or not, but I know you can only do it through the first 3 or 4 weeks of the semester.
