Blog Poll Submission Week 10 vs. 6th Grade Top 25
Bumped for amazing. I spiffed up the presentation a little bit, but the data belongs to mattyj. -HB
I teach 6th grade and have a class of boys who are obsessed with sports, especially football. In order to get them to talk less and learn more I told my class that on Mondays they could submit top 25 ballots and I would tally them up for a class poll. 13 students submitted ballots, and their biases and ignorances show big time (See: aggie and Purdue with 1st place votes). It all makes about as much sense as the Sagarin ratings. So, without further adieu, for your entertainment pleasure, our 6th grade class Top 25. Enjoy.

This is just awesome. For comparison, here are the links to the coaches, Harris, and AP polls. -HB
Here's my Blog Poll submission for this week as well:

Awesome
Looks like the Coaches/Harris poll with Oregon that far behind USC. This is amazing.

Amazing
that they slotted the Horns #3 this week just like you. I always wondered about your educational background….;-)

Did you flunk the Aggie?
Or are you just assuming he’ll do that on his own with his performance on tests.
You ain't hurt.

We should immediately petition the BCS.
This is just as good as any other poll…with no Stoops tree.

+1
Mostly because my 6th grade teacher generally just shook her head while it was in her hands as she slumped over.

Because the original post read “…It all makes about as much sence as the Sagarin ratings.” (Emphasis mine.) Being an educator is like being a politician: if you post something on the internet, you’d better make damned sure there aren’t any misspellings or other errors in it. Come on, man – you’re teaching our children.
Otherwise, interesting post.
Really? Does my signature suck?

?
You seriously feel the need to call someone out on a brain-fart spelling error that has already been corrected?
That is impressively uptight.
I mean, clearly the most important quality in a good teacher is the inability to commit a spelling error, right?
Don’t be a robot, dude.

My only real memories of 6th grade relate to diagramming sentences and the rote memorization hell we paid for misspellings. I’m not sure that’s entirely good but I understand adt2’s position.

The error was corrected
I can’t believe that a misspelling that was corrected is still worth four comments now. This thread is going the wrong way. Ridiculous conversation over.

Point Made
The real key here is that any of these sixth graders could work as an ESPN analyst right now, with the possible exception of the aggie. MattyJ has done his part to prepare them for the workforce.

about the aggie...
I think he has a spot to sit next to Mark May and take over Lou Holtz’s spot when he retires.
Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

How USC
is above Oregon is still a mystery?

Exactly, LH
(Replying down here to avoid that chain we were on). It’s amazing how their poll isn’t very different than the coaches’ poll. “When it doubt (and they usually are because they don’t watch the other games) go with the name you recognize”.
So mattyj: How much information did you give the kids? Did you supply them with records or stats beforehand or just let them pick based on whatever they had in their head?
Here’s a neat thought for mattyj: Next week, do the same thing, except show them the AP poll from this week on the overhead or something while they fill out their ballots. The coaches’ and Harris polls tend to be stupid right after something shakes up, and then it looks exactly like the AP poll the next week if nothing significant happens. I bet you get something like that.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around doing something fun in 6th grade
But it seems like an easy way to introduce them to persuasive writing. The odds that they each write something better than a Steven A. Smith column have got to be close to 100%.
