I hope this isn't a really dumb question
I read the primer — thanks, it was worth it. My question, which the site did not answer — why are the stats called “tempo-free”?

Explanation
Because they measure performance equalized for the number of opportunities a team has: points scored per possession, percentage of rebounding opportunities procured, etc.
For example: A team that scores 66 points in 60 possessions has performed as well on offense as a team that scores 77 points in 70 possessions (1.1 points/possession). The second team is just playing at a faster pace/tempo.
Hope that helps.
