It's not Stoops' fault the team sucks this year! It's the players' fault for sucking at football! In seriousness and fairness, Stoops is technically correct in the sense that, to a certain extent, he can only do so much and the rest is on the players to execute. But should he be making that point to the media? Uh, probably not if he wants to recruit well ever again.

Put that alongside his treatment of Bradford in the past year and the fact that he has both no chin and a double chin at the same time as reasons not to trust old Stoopsie.

Seriously, it's reaching an Aggie-level meltdown in Norman (and ironically enough, an Aggie win over OU might send it over the edge). It's becoming very entertaining.

just posted this over at c&c machine

wonder what sooner fans think of it. what would you say if Mack called out our O-Line?

by drbadass on Nov 11, 2009 4:46 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

If Mack said that, I'd say,

“Get out of the way. When I faint, I’m going down fast and I don’t want to hit anybody.”

Great find, Billy Z. Love the article and the style it's presented in.

On several levels, this is a RIPPING INDICTMENT of Stoops and staff. I love the balance of the columnitst’s words. He’s fair in pointing out the buzzards’ luck that has fallen on OU’s offense. And he’s fair in saying the blame has to be shared and that Stoops is trying to wriggle out of accepting his share of said blame.

I’ll cut Stoops more slack that many of the rest of us on BON. If he’d taken over OUR program (and I’m sure glad that didn’t happen), all of us would have reveled in the 2000 national championship and the five straight RRS wins and the three additional MNC game appearancs and all those Big 12 titles. He’s a better guy than we make him out to be, due to our ardent rooting interest.

Still, he’s doing the same thing Tommy West did when he was axed this week at Memphis. Look, Stoops may have a lot of good qualities — but his lone (that’s one) national title came largely with players recruited by John Blake’s staff. Yeah, Stoops has also won with his staff’s recruits, but it’s his staff’s recruits NOW that can’t block, can’t catch, can’t run when they do catch it, and can’t avoid covering the field with yellow hankies.

I love it. And I won’t even use the time, and tack on “OU --s.” OK. I will. Kind of.

by edsp on Nov 11, 2009 4:46 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.

First, Berry Tramel is an very good newspaper columnist. One of the best local guys left out there. Shame he writes about the Sooners and Cowboys instead of the Longhorns.

And yeah, I think Stoops seems like a pretty decent human being removed from football (unlike, say, Barry Switzer). But a lot of the cracks in his football personality have shown over the last couple of years. You can get away with a lot when you’re winning. When you’re losing every big game you’re in or you’re losing a lot of other games too, true colors fly. And Stoops has pretty much shown that he’s willing to do whatever it takes to win (or make it appear like it’s not his fault when he loses), everyone around him be damned. I can’t get on board with that.

The one thing I'll never get over . . .

and this is more the school and the NCAA, is OU skating on the car dealership paying three players for work not done.

First, don’t tell me Stoops didn’t know about it LONG before it broke publicly. When he found out, he did what Stoops and his kind tend to do — bury it deep and hope it never gets out. In other words, keeps the violation secret instead of taking it to higher authorities. Second, when it broke, he put the players under the bus.

Classy.

All I gotta say is I don’t see as much ou flag crap and they know their getting what they deserve for running the score up last year on some teams.

muahahaa…god I love when the sooners are hurting and I think my boss as been a jack ass to me because his team is looking a little crappy not to forget my Texas flag in my office that he has too see when he leaves his office EVERY DAY.

Negative recruiting

If I were a recruiter trying to get a kid whose list includes USC, I probably wouldn’t bother pointing out Pete’s little tantrum about Dirty Sanchez’ going pro. However, if I were recruiting a kid who is also considering OU, I’d definitely pull out this anecdote. No question.

Why one and not the other? Well, Pete Carroll’s criticism of Sanchez could reasonably have been justified as being for the best interest of the kid. Mark Sanchez almost certainly could have used another season of collegiate experience, and the truth is that he probably assured Carroll that he was returning, making it something of a shock to Carroll when he declared. But Stoops? He’s not just saying his players need to play better. He’s not just saying that the team hasn’t been prepared. He’s outright blaming his kids entirely rather than taking executive ownership blame of the problem, which is what a coach who is making $4 million per season has to be able to do, no exceptions. Great leaders delegate authority, but responsibility and blame cannot and should not ever be delegated, especially to kids.

by burntorangehorn on Nov 11, 2009 7:19 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Why does everyone keep saying these are kids??

Sure they are not in there 30’s but they are not kids. Stoops is a moron what else is new.

by girlslikefootball2 on Nov 11, 2009 8:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

They're kids

I don’t know about you, but almost all the guys on my team were still kids when we were in college. They don’t qualify as kids when it comes to journalism (technically anyone 18+ is a man, not a boy, in the AP style guide), but I gave up journalism some time ago, so I call them as they are: kids. A college student-athlete bears far more similarity to a high school kid than to a working adult.

Stoops and his recruits are just like cheating lawyers and crooked clients

Have you ever noticed that lawyers and their clients usually share the same sense of ethics? I would never represent a client I didn’t believe or thought was not being truthful. But, those potential “clients” always find a lawyer at their same level willing to play the game. It is really uncanny how you can size a lawyer and client up to each other.

Football recruiting is no different. D. Scott and his mom deserved Hawkins. JMac and his momma deserved Stoops. Stoops has built a team on the likes of thugs like Jarboe and Chaisson, and now he blames the players for not being coachable and good. Whatever. Stoops is such a freaking egomaniac, the only thing he knows is that losing could not possibly be his fault.

And, Stoops does have no chin and double chins at the same time. That is just weird.

Last Texas game the commentators were talking about talent lining up play for Mack Brown at Texas. They said Texas doesn’t recruit-Texas selects. I love that.

by Wrangler86 on Nov 11, 2009 10:00 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I thought Wells had a nice post recently

It showed the number of five-star recruits for Texas as compared to other teams in the past few years. IIRC, Texas had seven in the covered timespan, while some (USC?) had twice that. Yet Texas is as successful as any of those teams on offense, or at least nearly so. It truly does look like Texas does a better job of selecting than a lot of other top teams do of recruiting.

by burntorangehorn on Nov 12, 2009 8:11 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

And I have to remind myself of that.

Watching the recruiting boards and reading the hype is contagious. We can get to the tendancy of buying into the lore without really discerning the individual selections. I wonder at times if Mack isn’t making a mistake by not offering the 5 star guy earlier in the process, but as we have learned over the years it’s often times better to leave them in the fire and let the process refine them. We can look back and name several 5 star guys who were exposed in the heat of it all.

WTF Texas........

“It’s not Stoops’ fault the team sucks this year! It’s the players’ fault for sucking at football! Put that alongside his treatment of Bradford in the past year and the fact that he has both no chin and a double chin at the same time as reasons not to trust old Stoopsie."

First of all, I get it. You hate OU and anything OU related not to mention that state of Oklahoma. I get that. However, I watched the entire video from the newsok.com link and am really trying to figure out what in the h@$% this thread is about. I fully back Stoops. Standards should not be lowered due to this generation’s laziness and they especially should not be lowered or accepted to accomodate lazy athletes whom are given a full ride scholarship to play football. Thats what I took from this video. As in addressing the media, well he is being asked by the media and if I were in his shoes, I’d say what I felt. I wouldn’t give a d@*% and I wouldn’t watch what I should try to say in effort to not scare away recruits. The standards should not be lowered for laziness, and if attending classes is too hard/stressful for them even though everything is free, well then they should pack their bags.

“Put that alongside his treatment of Bradford in the past year and the fact that he has both no chin and a double chin at the same time as reasons not to trust old Stoopsie.”

After this year’s chain of events, its easy to call out Bradford and say that we was stupid or accuse Stoops of being selfish. However, it was ultimately Bradford’s choice. And he loves OU. In his words, he was living his dream. I see nothing wrong with that. He’ll still get drafted, especially if players such as Stephen McGee, Chase Daniel, Chris Simms, Josh Freeman, or Vince Young (who is garbage in the NFL by the way) can get drafted. Bradford mechanically is better than all of those guys. He’ll be a first rounder. Unfortunately, the number one pick will be that beast from Nebraska, Suh.

Wrangler86, quit talking out of you ace. You only know what you read from the media. You have absolutely no evidence. Last time I checked, Bomar and Quinn were kicked off the team. Last time I checked, Josh Jarboe was kicked off the team for only rapping. Not to mention, we all know how what Sergio Kindle has done buy yet he is still a horn. Only on extremely rare cases does Mack Brown dismiss players from the football team. Criticize someone like Urban Meyer. That guy has had over 30 players getting arrested. He has a player who tried to poke another’s eyes out and initially wanted to suspend him for half a game. Urban Meyer is a joke.

As to running up the score, any Texas fan who thinks this is an absolute hyprocrite. What was the score from the UT-UTEP game? Can someone please tell me? I guess Stoops should have told his offense to take a knee midway through the 3rd quarter from those games…..

I’m just trying to understand Horn logic. Thats all. Now its just a matter of time before all of the double wide comments unload………..BOOMER!

by EnragedOUfan on Nov 12, 2009 8:48 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Laziness?

You think the problem is laziness? I don’t think that’s it at all. Heck, he didn’t even talk about laziness, did he? Here’s what I think about the situation, as I posted on an OU thread:

I think that some of these guys COULD play in the scheme, but many of them, particularly the youngsters who have been thrust into action, have ended up in situations for which they just weren’t prepared. That is, they could eventually have enough experience to successfully start and execute the scheme, but they don’t have anywhere enough yet. They’re probably spending a little more time with opponent-specific prep than going through the growing pains of indoctrination and fundamentals, and that’s a failure IMO. Obviously Good and Jones have the talent to play much better than they did in the first nine games of the season, but really, they’re completely unprepared. I think the coaches are going to play a little catch-up in the bowl practices, or at least they should.

Bob Stoops knows a helluva lot more about coaching football players than I ever will, but I do think he’s done a poor job of setting his youngsters up for success this season. He knew coming into 2009 that he had lost five of his six top linemen, and he knew the guys he had to prepare. He just plain didn’t do it the right way. I’m 100% convinced that he forgot that they were as green as they were, and instead approached their training the same way he’d done when Robinson, Loadholt, Braxton, etc. were there. That’s like expecting fifth-graders to learn concepts the same way as high-schoolers, IMO. It doesn’t make the young linemen dumb or incapable, so much as it illustrates that they have to establish fundamentals and other foundation skills before moving on to the fineries of their positions.

Dude-Put the screwdriver down and slowly back away

You say I’m talking out my ace, but apparently you are in denial. If you try for one second to justify enrolling Justin Chaisson you are an idiot. The evidence is well documented in the police reports and yes, media reports from the criminal case. Just cuz the evidence is from the media doesn’t mean you can ignore it and say it isn’t true. When the media shows copies of the police report, I tend to think it is pretty accurate. The girl had a restraining order against him. Depiste the restraining order he got into an argument with her in the school parking lot. She left with friends. He follwed her and with his little brother in the car he kidnapped her and held a screwdriver to her neck. He threatened to kill her. He drove to a remote storage place. Her friends followed them and called the police. His brother pleaded with him to stop. He was arrested. The charges were reduced for a plea deal. DUH—he admitted it!!! Stoops never commented on it publicly. Chaisson enrolls. Yeah, I sure would like to be his teammate!! My ace!

Jarboe’s first offense was somethign like taking a gun to school. Then raps about that stuff and posts his gangsta style. OK no biggie.

And Stoops had no idea Bomar was being paid by Big Red Auto. Cheats and liars. OU Sux

You're absolutely right
As to running up the score, any Texas fan who thinks this is an absolute hyprocrite [sic]. What was the score from the UT-UTEP game?

Yep, you’re absolutely right. McCoy just absolutely lit up the Miners’ defense throughout the fourth quarter. I guess what Texas did against UTEP was no different than any other team that kept its starting QB in the game, throwing down field with a 34-point lead with four minutes left in the game.

Vince Young

is 2-0 with efficient stats and no turnovers since being put back in as the starter. Just saying.

And I can think of Buck Burnette and Ramonce Taylor being dismissed in 2008 and 2006, just off the top of my head.

by LonghornEm on Nov 12, 2009 10:39 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

And the bottom line...

These are all Stoops’ recruits. John Blake’s boys are gone. What you recruit/sign is what you get to work with. Maybe Big Game Bob should start going after players with a better work ethic. (See YouTube video with Brown talking about what he looks for in players.)

DC...let's not help the enemy!

I hope they keep recruiting thugs and such. I’m loving the current state of OK. I say give ole Big Game Bob a raise!

by Wrangler86 on Nov 12, 2009 12:07 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Big Game Bob needs to take responsibility for the players he recruits and the state of his program instead of acting like a prick and demeaning his players in public.

Just waiting for the day Chaisson gets on the field. Imagine the Game Day signs…

by dimecoverage on Nov 12, 2009 5:02 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Bomar and Quinn were kicked off, sure

But I’d like to know what it is that you think Kindle has done. A DUI and a collision with a building? I guess that could be grounds for dismissal, but less so than, say, taking a girl hostage and threatening her life with a screwdriver to her neck.

"We all know how what...buy"

Not to mention, we all know how what Sergio Kindle has done buy yet he is still a horn.

To be fair

When things were going well, he took the raise and got “jobs” for the stars so they could share the wealth. Now that he is taking crap from fans, he is sharing that as well.

I called this

Is a payback karma against the land of thieves. They’re well deserved what have happened to them now especially, after they had stolen our MNC spot last year.

BZ, thanks for the reminder of this Sat. night game. It’s gonna be fun to watch how they get beat by aTm!

Wat time is it? OU still suxs!!!
