Boise State Broncos go public with athletic program, will sell stock shares to anyone, everyone - One Bronco Nation Under God
Not satire. Boise State really selling, like, stock. In their athletics department.

Sell short

If Longhorns buy a controlling interest ...
wouldn’t it be like having two teams in a fantasy league? We could stockpile the athletes in Austin (assuming that there are any “blue field” players we’d want), and put our scrimmage team in Boise. I’d think that the NCAA would want input on something like this.

maybe a first step to going independent?

Notre Dame should do this
That way every time they lose to Navy/Syracuse/etc. the alums can oust Weis/Willingham/Davies/etc. without having to go through the middleman of the AD or the whole “evaluate at the end of the season” BS.
whoever is the controlling interest will be the ultimate gambler :-O

I should buy in
and make a motion that they get rid of that ridiculous blue field
On the other hand
Couldn’t a rich “investor” hijack the athletic decisions? If that investor is not a fan of Boise state could they hire a bad coach, or something really drastic like make the field Blue green? A school could lose control if few investors buy a majority share of the athletic program.
Usually we lose control to fans/alumni. But I would worry about outsiders. China investment opportunity?
Easy way to solve that problem is for the school to buy 51% of the shares and make it a rule that they cannont sell those.
But that would undermine the stated purpose.
Now these decisions are in the hands of the school (and rich alumni). If you want to sell these shares it is so that the fans can have a say. But if they can never pool enough votes to overcome the schools majority share holder position, then what is the point?
To raise capital.
Just like when a corporation issues stock. I’d be willing to bet that Boise State has fewer rich alums (and a more generous definition of “rich”) than schools like Texas, Michigan, tOSU, Notre Dame, etc. Could just be that they’re hurting in the recession and/or are really trying to make themselves a nationally-respected powerhouse and don’t have their own T. Boone Pickens to help them do it.
its just a fundraiser
you don’t actually own anything or get dividends. Its basically a $100 peice of paper that cannot be exchanged for anything.
but...
“you own the ability to come to the meetings and give your thoughts and suggestions on how it ought it be deployed”, where I am sure they will hang on your every word as a “share holder”.
