Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

From a very biased TCU writer on b/r. Just let it go...

With the SEC seemingly owning a spot in the BCS title game, the question is:

Which team has earned a spot against Florida or Alabama?

While some would like to dispute the place of primacy for the SEC, especially if Florida wins out with what would be only two wins over top-25 teams (LSU and Alabama), it is really meaningless to argue about this, given the current irrational state of college football.

Instead, we need to focus on which of the three contenders for the non-SEC participant for the BCS title game.

Hmmm....
Under the NCAA strength of schedule rankings, Texas is No. 39, barely above TCU.

So our SoS is better… good, we’ve got that out of the way.

Texas has only one win over a currently ranked team and will not likely face another this season, except in its bowl game.

The Longhorns have one of the worst non-conference schedules in the country, without a single game against a member of a BCS conference.

No non-conference games against BCS teams? Good thing we’re in a BCS conference. We have 5 wins so far over BCS teams, and will have 4 more by the time we’re done.

TCU has played… 2 BCS conference opponents? Virginia (3-6) and Clemson (6-3)?

The win over Oklahoma State is okay, I guess, but Okie State lost at home to Houston, as well. Plus, the Cowboys were missing their highly respected skill players when they played Texas.

Texas has faced only one top-20 offense (Texas Tech) and one top-20 defense (Oklahoma).

I guess the win (41-14) over Oklahoma State (7-2), is ok.

Only one top 20 offense? TCU has only faced one top 20 offense ( BYU ), and Texas will face another by the end of the season in a game that many expect to be a rout. Both of the offenses we faced will rank higher than BYU’s.

Only one top 20 defense? TCU will have only faced one top 20 defense, if they can make it past Utah. Plus, the defense we faced was better.

I’d be willing to bet money that the average offense and average defensive rankings of our common opponents would be in our favor… but see our better SoS, thx.

The Texas offense has been kept under 350 yards four times this season.

Moreover, the Longhorn passing attack has been largely held in check by bad pass defenses. Texas has faced no teams ranked in the top 20 in pass defense and only faces one ranked below 69th in the entire season.

The Longhorn defense, while highly ranked, has held only three opponents under 250 yards this season and allowed over 400 yards to Texas Tech. The Texas defensive numbers are largely the result of playing Colorado, UTEP, and Central Florida.

Wow… just… wow. We padded our numbers with Colorado, UTEP, and UCF? No notes about our defensive performances against Mizzouri, OSU, OU?

Not exactly powers of college football.

Good thing our fan base travels well, otherwise the bowls would ignore us completely!

Texas is currently ranked No. 1 in rushing defense, but this is largely related to the weak competition. Texas has faced only one good running team (No. 20 Oklahoma State, who they still gave up over 134 yards on the ground to with their star RB) and four of the 25 worst running teams in college football, with two more bad running teams coming up.

It’s hard to have good running stats when Texas holds you to -54 yards on the day. Kind of ruins you for the year.

To put it simply, Texas has just enough to win, but would be ranked behind Boise State if it switched uniforms and resumes with Baylor. The Longhorns really do not deserve to be penciled into the BCS title game.

If Baylor was 9-0 right now, they should be ranked ahead of TCU.

You should post this there.

Heck, maybe invite him to come over and play. He seems to think he has a lot of knowledge.

TCU BEARCATS?

Yeah if you take Cincy’s offense and TCU’s defense and make a team, then they would give Texas a good and possibly great game.

new year, same tcu

I like TCU. I think they are a great MWC team. They are a very good football team in general. But I remember all the hype surrounding them in 2007 when they rolled into Austin. I remember Herbstreit taking them for his upset special. I remember my TCU buddies sending me trash talk text messages. And finally, I remember watching a 13-34 trip to the woodshed. 2007 was an up year for TCU and a down year for Texas. I’m not saying that they shouldn’t have their shot at the big boys, but I get tired of everyone having such lofty opinions of teams that won’t have to back it up by going against top tier programs. Texas SHOULD get the benefit of the doubt (however unfounded), because they have shown time and time again that, when given the opportunity, they can beat the best.
