Giving Florida too much credit

6-0?

I have them at 3-3.

That includes the 41-35 loss to Michigan with the Second Coming under center.

How to treat USC (alt. title: opening up a huge can of worms)

(1) If you want to simply use “National Championships,” then credit USC with two. Anyone who thinks that Texas, or any other school in the country, wouldn’t claim a national championship for what USC accomplished in 2003 is smoking crack.

(2) If you’re looking for greater precision, then say USC has “1 BCS Championship; 2 AP Championships.” LSU would have “2 BCS Championships; 1 AP Championship.” Every other school on the list would have the same number of BCS championships as AP championships.

Technically USC did win a national championship

The AP awards a national championship that is wholly removed from the BCS national championship, so yes, USC did win one that season. But if given the option of selecting one team or the other, which is a necessity when awarding schools credit for comparison against each other, then almost none would argue for USC over LSU. LSU won the much more widely recognized national championship through the much more widely recognized mechanism that year.

Not quite

The AP poll was knowingly a part of the BCS formula through the 2004 season. It wasn’t until the Cal vs Texas “Mack politicking” fiasco that they decided their involvement was a violation of journalistic ethics and pulled out. Their involvement in 2003 and the subsequent season, in my eyes, indicates that the BCS championship was the greater of the two.

I guess I can accept, as HH suggests, the credit of 1 BCS, 2 AP, but the can of worms is definitely open in that case. Why not also give credit for computer poll champions?

The AP poll still awarded a separate national championship then, as they do now.

The computer polls do not award a separate national championship.

The AP national championship is recognized by the NCAA, just as the BCS is. Neither is technically more or less sanctioned than the other. However, I would find it hilarious if the media voters did indeed make the claim that it would violate their journalistic integrity to partake in the BCS process, when their journalistic ethics are very much in question every time they make out their half-assed polls with the knee-jerk reactions from week to week. The problem with the coaches is that they don’t have nearly enough time to actually look at results themselves to make informed decisions; the problem with the media voters is that they sway with the wind, are very regionally-biased, and don’t usually know much about football. Furthermore, they don’t actually watch that much more of the football games than the coaches do, except maybe the ESPN highlights.

You're right

The NCAA recognizes the AP as one of “a number of polling organizations”. However, it does also note all of the computer polls individually.

I’d argue that the NCAA does recognize the BCS system as it’s primary determinant of a national champion.

Schools in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision do not participate in the NCAA Division I Football Championship.Instead, they participate in postseason bowl games. Since 1998, the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) has conducted a bowl contest between it’s two top-ranked teams to determine a national champion.
And I misquoted. The given reason for the AP pulling out was to “preserve its reputation for honesty and integrity.”

Agree on the coaches. The main problem with all of the human polls is the lack of bias (newspaper men need to sell newspapers, coaches need to keep their jobs) and inability to evaluate all teams.

I stand corrected...

You’re right about Florida…don’t know how I came out with those bowl results.

I didn’t mention it above, good work putting this together. Giving the current collision course, it’s nice to see UF and Bama’s (3-3 also) recent bowl records compared to ours.
Bama has had overall luck against the Big12, going 3-1 (ISU, TT, OSU, and CU respectively) in bowls. However, none of the victories were by a large margin (6 point victory over the Buffs in 2007 was the largest).
Except for last year’s annual Big Game Bob egg laying, Florida hasn’t met a Big12 team in a bowl since Nebraska in 1995’s Fiesta Bowl (a blowout by NU, 62-24).
Interesting.

Interesting tidbit...

I enjoyed it…nice to compare the heavys to one another.

Dallas Griffin won the Draddy

in 2007. Just thought we should get credit for that one if you were going to put it up for LSU

Not trying to sell us short

Just taking all the awards that were posted on Wikipedia, which left out Dallas Griffin. Many apologies. (Damn Wikipedia)

There's a Wuerffel Trophy?

Interesting. While looking it up, I noticed The Roommate is a finalist this season.

by BigTexBD on Nov 12, 2009 3:04 PM CST reply actions

No Tebow

Funny how Tebow is not a finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy.

by Gator-Hater on Nov 13, 2009 2:42 PM CST up reply actions

I find it funny that The Roommate is a perfectly acceptable nickname

And that everyone knows exactly who it is. I hate the media. Really, I do.

by GoHorns on Nov 13, 2009 4:00 PM CST up reply actions

That sounds bad

I really do find that nickname funny. I just hate that the media drove it to that with their excessive talk of it. Much like their obsessive slobbering of Tebow.
