Around SBN: Dana White Announces Koscheck vs. Hendricks for UFC on FOX

Circus music plays between Greg Davis' ears.

This is a joke. I'm not trying to start 500 comment thread/debate/bitch session about Greg Davis.  I know he has his faults, but he's our OC and we're stuck with him until he rides off into the sunset, most likely the "little spoon" in front of Mack.

Just thought I'd share.  I know he's gotten a little bit better the past few weeks.  Our running game has seems to have taken a step foward against Baylor and that is a good sign.  I know everyone is saying, "but but but...its just Baylor". Bite me.  Two RBs gained over 80 yards a piece makes me happy regardless of who we've played, but I'm getting away from the joke at hand.

Hook em and lets go Hawk Hunting!

Enjoy.

So, when Mack retires and becomes AD or sits at DKR’s right hand, who becomes OC? Major Applewhite?

Heck, assuming Muschamp’s still around, who becomes DC? Probably not Akina again, but I’d just bet Muschamp knows someone who wouldn’t mind the job.

I would surround Boom with the Best Coordinators Money Could Buy.

To grow into the role, he will need to have complete trust in both coordinators to avoid micromanaging. Then he needs to get his Masters at the “How To Recruit Texas” by Mack Brown.

Funny Kriess

The shiny object gave me a hilarious visual.

You don’t think Muschamp would promote Akina boh?

by orangetower on Nov 16, 2009 4:39 PM CST reply actions

No way

I think it was apparent that Akina had bit off more than he could chew when he took on the main role on defense, and I think it speaks well of him and the program that they so amicably decided to move him to his former role. He’s perfect for it, and I hope he stays in it without wanting to move back up. He’s compensated on par with many DCs, so money shouldn’t be an issue for him.

Not only that:

Akina is a hell of a DBs coach — its what he does best, lets leave him to it.

The swine flu takes a Will Muschamp shot every September.

I Think Akina Should Be Awarded

You look at the body of work this guy ahs done wiht DB’s over the length of his career and he is by far the best in the business. I’m okay with leaving him at DB coach if that’s the best for the team and for Akina.

Who do you think would be on Muschamps radar then as DC? Have we even seen that person yet?

by orangetower on Nov 17, 2009 9:45 AM CST up reply actions

Hard to say

UT typically doesn’t have to go digging in the lower-BCS and mid-major ranks for up-and-comers, but rather courts the guys who are already getting it done at the highest echelon and paying him more than anyone else. Sort of Yankee-like, I guess, but a whole lot less irritating when it’s coaches.

So who are the best in the business right now? The following are guys I’d consider for the DC position:

Charlie Strong, DC, Florida. He probably has his eye on his own HC job, and DC at Texas is a good stepping stone to that end. If Mack retires and Muschamp is elevated within two years, and Strong is still available, this might be within the realm of possibility. But I think that Strong will find himself in a head coaching job at a BCS school within four years at most either way. He coaches the linebackers, and does a fine job of it.

Dan McCarney, Asst. HC for defense and DL coach, Florida. You probably remember him as the HC for Iowa State. I think he’d be a good addition. He did a lot of good things with not-so-good recruits, and I think he’s shown he can do some great things with great talent like he has at UF. The reason I think he’d actually be a good complement to Akina is that he’s been more DL/LB-oriented, which does not conflict with what Akina does. That goes for both McCarney and Strong, in fact.

Bud Foster, DC, Va Tech. I don’t think he gets a whole lot of credit for it, but he’s run a very consistent, turnover-minded defense for years at VT. I think he’d fit well with Muschamp’s philosophy on defense, namely “Beat the fv(k out of them, make them pay, and then kill their souls.”

Jim Heacock, DC, Ohio State. He runs a vicious defense and specializes in defensive line and linebackers.

John Chavis, DC, LSU. He coached some of the best defenses in the country under Fulmer at Tennessee, including a ton of guys who developed into fine NFL players, like Al Wilson. Notice Eric Berry was a lot more effective with a guy like Chavis coaching him than with Monte Kiffin. He’s the master of the zone blitz.

Tyrone Nix, DC, Ole Miss. Ugh, he’d have the stench of Nutt on him, but he does a pretty good job for that program, he’s young, he’s pretty exciting, and I think he’d fit in well with Muschamp.

There are some longshot guys who could be worth a look, like Manny Diaz (DC of Middle Tennessee St.), Ken Norton, Jr. (LBs coach at USC), and Kevin Steele (LBs coach at Clemson, formerly LBs coach for Carolina in NFL, LBs for Alabama under Saban, FSU under Bowden, and HC at Baylor).

As far as Texas players/assistants who could return:

Vance Bedford is a former UT defensive back who was OC at Okie Lite, DBs coach at Michigan, and is now DBs coach at Florida. Not sure what position he’d take, as I doubt he’d be a pick for DC, and I don’t think I’d consider replacing Akina with him as DBs coach.

Jerry Gray, another former UT safety, was a fairly successful defensive coordinator for the Bills, and now coaches DBs for the Redskins.

Some of the more outside-the-box possibilities include current college head coaches who are good defensive coaches, but not great at running a program, as well as NFL HCs and DCs who might lose their jobs. Wade Phillips came to mind, but I think he’d probably take an NFL DC job first, or failing that, the HC job at U. of Houston if Sumlin leaves. Eric Mangini’s, well, not an attractive candidate, because his personality probably wouldn’t mesh well with Muschamp’s. Rather, it probably wouldn’t fit in the same room. Perhaps my favorite candidate of current NFL assistants is Greg Blache. He’s the Redskins’ current DC, and most definitely not the reason the Skins suck so much this year. He employs a little different defense than Muschamp does, but I think they could work out the details, and Blache has coached at a high level in the college ranks (Notre Dame and Tulane before the NFL). The main concern I’d have with him is that he is a little older, like about 60. Bob Slowik was a pretty good defensive coordinator for ECU, then a solid assistant under Wanny in Dallas for the Super Bowl years and several other teams as DC in the NFL.

So…ideas?

Couple of Q's

Wouldn’t a Charlie Strong move be parrallel for him? If not then how long would he stay before the HC opens up? Do we go there?

I like the Norton idea for recruiting prowess, but can he coach? USC D is terrible this year.

Finally, would Muschamp rather have an extremely reliable OC and keep the D calls to himself?

by orangetower on Nov 17, 2009 2:05 PM CST up reply actions

It would be sort of parallel

But not entirely. I actually made a mistake in posting that he is the DC for Florida, because he’s technically the co-DC, LBs coach, and asst. head coach. Being the full DC at Texas would probably be a small step up in terms of actual position, although the pay might be significantly better if UT really wanted him.

by burntorangehorn on Nov 17, 2009 2:26 PM CST up reply actions

Whoops, to answer your other q's:

2. Norton can definitely coach. Their linebackers have been extremely well coached in his time there, including guys like Rivers, Cushing, Maualuga, and a number of other good ones.

3. I don’t think Muschamp would continue to be the DC. He might call the defensive plays, but playcalling is a very different thing from running the day-to-day operations of a defensive unit. The vast majority of coaching happens outside the weekly 3-3.5hrs. of gametime, and although I could see Muschamp spending more time with the defense than with the offense, I think (and hope) that he’ll properly delegate.

by burntorangehorn on Nov 17, 2009 2:29 PM CST up reply actions

Ok...then that opens the other end of the spectrum.

Who would his OC be? Does GD stay, Applewhite, or someone else?

by orangetower on Nov 17, 2009 2:52 PM CST up reply actions

I asked the same thing

I would think Applewhite. I expect Davis to retire with Brown, although that’s just speculation on my part.

by burntorangehorn on Nov 17, 2009 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

I Don't Know

If I could handle the thrill of it all. Seriously,,,I think that would be awesome.

Would Greg Davis then take Bill Little’s place? jk

by orangetower on Nov 17, 2009 4:26 PM CST up reply actions

What thrill?

Losing the two guys who have made UT’s offense one of the most successful in the country in recent years?

The Thrill of Applewhite Running

The offense. I think he’s going to be amazing. He is learning alot right now and will have alot of tools to work with talent wise.

by orangetower on Nov 18, 2009 2:53 PM CST up reply actions

Akina was rewarded

Sort of, at least. When Chizik left to go coach at Iowa State in 2007, Texas brought in Larry MacDuff and had him and Akina work as co-coordinators of the defense. Akina was in charge of calling the plays. That didn’t work out too well (UT set a dubious school record for most yards allowed in a season), and thank heavens Akina and Mack had a great working relationship, because they amicably agreed for Akina to return to coaching the defensive backs (and helping w/ STs) for the 2008 season to the present.

Again, I don’t think it’d be smart to re-promote Akina. I say keep giving him raises—it’s easier than going on hunts for top assistants.

But it's Baylor...

i agree with you here. yeah baylor’s probably not the best test for the running game, but i seem to remember struggling against colorado’s crappy run defense early in the season. so it’s definitely improved in my opinion. at the very least this will make the rest our opponents respect our running game more
