darius white will take official to UT
via insidetexas.com
Darius White will take an official visit to UT for the Kansas game this weekend. I know a lot of folks had all but written him off, but it looks as if we are still in the thick of things with him.
Also scheduled to visit is Jackson Jeffcoat. This could turn out to be a very big recruiting weekend for us.
It is great to be closing down a recruiting cycle and actually having some positive news, for once! We have a great chance with Jeffcoat and Hicks, and now seem to be in the mix again for White. Mix this in with other various rumors going around the interwebs (Scotty Young, rumors of an OU decommit) and this could be a fantastic last couple months for our program, recruiting and otherwise.
Last, I want to say how awesome Insidetexas is getting. Their association with Gerry Hamilton has turned a great site into the premier Texas pay-site on the net. The hoops news is fantastic, and they continue to break stories before Ketch. Im no schill, but if its worth it to you, consider buying a subscription.
Good time to be a Longhorn!

I posted the same thing about 30 minutes ago
but your post has much better info, so I’ll delete mine.
Good stuff, and thanks.
Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.
sorry about that..
I guess I didnt look hard enough!
I also forgot to mention rumors swirling (on tiger message boards no less) about a potential Mike Davis de-commit, with us being the beneficiary. Do we have room for both?
Davis
The thing with Davis is that he doesn’t have an offer yet. He would have to make a visit to Austin to get his offer and I don’t think that’s likely because of the Cobbs commitment and the large number of receivers already on campus and committed. Bottom line — Texas doesn’t need Davis.

skyline buddies
with skyline’s LB corey nelson committed to ATM (a bunch of maroons), i’m bettin that he’ll be swayed in that direction.

Big Night
Senior Night, ABC, Capacity Crowd, Colts All Time Record (Hopefully is decided by halftime so D White can get a good look at Gilbert scoring his first TD pass of his career) and the recruits getting a good look at Texas Fans love for the Horns. Another defensive domination (Jeffcoat able to see the Burnt Orange light burning in his future) and 101,000 loud and crazy supporters. Hook ’Em
Show your appreciation and do your part for this squad and for Coach Brown’s program. Come early, be loud, and stay for the seniors victory lap.
I hope we get the commits right on the spot.
Did Davis even have an offer?
I had never heard that he did, I don’t think, or that he was even on the radar. I’m probably just forgetting some activity.
Jeffcoat and Hicks would be awesome. If there truly is a question as to whether or not Cobbs is suited to play WR at the college leve, then White would seem an attractive option too. I’m not sure why this would be characterized as being “back in the mix” for him, because I never saw anything that indicated that UT wasn’t in the mix all along, but it’d be great to have him commit. It’d be nice to make some hay from this great season for UT and embarrassing season for OU.

No, we don't have room. But we could probably make room.
Somebody may have a better handle on the numbers that I do, so feel free to correct the following:
1. Texas currently has 85 players on scholarship, the max allowable
2. We have 16 seniors (including three one-year walks). Norton is not among the 16, since he’s apparently coming back in 2010
3. The 85-minus-16 math leaves 69 players with eligibility remaining
4. We already have 20 commitments for the 2010 class — four over the limit — and that 20 does not count Jeffcoat, Hicks or Darius White
5. Mathematical quandary, it would seem. Attrition must claim at least four players, seven if the three players referenced in the third paragraph this post were to commit.
Thoughts
I'm counting 17 seniors
But I’m probably making a mistake in my count. Anyway, your point stands. I have to wonder about how they’re going to fit the whole class under the limit. There should be no problem with the 25-per-year limit, of course, but the total is a little pressing.
There are the usual suspects as far as transfers, like Payne. Some fellows might leave in search of playing time.

What about early exits?
Any thoughts on who might go to the draft early? The only area I could see is out of the D-Backs?

Re: attrition, early draft exits, injuries . . .
I’m pretty sure the coaching staff ALREADY knows who the four players are that would get us from 89 on scholarship to 85. And if they make additional offers — or a player with a standing offer commits — they probably have a good idea where that ’ship will come from.
In other words, I don’t think the staff is gonna just keep accepting commitments without first knowing that the scholarhip numbers will work.
I can look thru the roster at MB-TF and see non-freshmen who have 2010 eligibility (in some cases, seasons beyond that) who aren’t playing and are good bets to join the attrition ranks.
Have to believe
that a wide receiver or two will be gone. Losing Fitzhenry wouldn’t hurt much, but it would be disappointing for a guy like DeSean Hales to leave or Greg Timmons. Hard to imagine that juniors like Brandon Collins or Phillip Payne would leave, though. If Payne was going to leave, it would have been last spring.

Couldn't Hales Be A Specialist?
The kid has alot of talent, but catching a ball hasn’t appeared to be a strength so far. Unless he gets alot of time on hands work and with Gilbert next spring and summer then he could be outside looking in again. I would love to see him make it.
Specialist
If he’s having trouble catching the ball, then returning punts is out. If something happens and Monroe ends up leaving the program, then maybe kick returns and as the motion man on the jet sweeps Monroe has been running, but Goodwin is probably a more likely candidate.
Ultimately, the death knell for Hales may be that Goodwin and Monroe have both passed him so far, but it could just be that he needs more time to become a more refined wide receiver. The question is whether he will wait that long.

Numbers crunch at WR (TE also) means there has to be some attrition . . .
whether that’s injury-related, or transfer to get more playing time, or Mack Brown saying (in effect) we won’t be able to renew your scholarship.
I suspect Payne won’t be granted a fifth year, and that he was told as much last winter or spring. Collins is a player; sure hope he returns. The two RS freshmen who aren’t playing much, and Timmons (who’s redshirting) may figure out they’re down the totem pole with more talent coming in, so . . .
Why would Timmons be down the totem pole
Especially from incoming freshmen? I don’t think anyone except a non-schol player, who doesn’t factor into the scholarship cap anyway, is down the totem pole from an incoming freshmen—especially not a highly-touted receiver like Timmons.

Hard to imagine Hales, Timmons, or Collins leaving
We haven’t even seen Hales or Timmons yet, but word is that they are very good. Payne hasn’t done much and is gettin’ long in the tooth, but I don’t even think WR is the position that sees the attrition since we need and play so many.
GG as the gunslinger—we will need fresh bodies at WR. Plenty of catches for all, and D. White probably has seen his potential future with the Texas OL and GG pitching to him. It can be freakin’ amazing.
Maybe
He had the academic troubles and now the DUI. Doubt they kick him off the team for this, though. He’d have to leave of his own accord or, knocking on wood here, do something a lot worse.

Numbers always seem to work out
A few won’t qualify academically, or they “grey shirt”. I mean, if we were desperate and Coach Brown asked Case McCoy to gray shirt in order to get a spot for Jackson Jeffcoat what do you think he’d say. Also there are situations with injuries and transfers. I am not too worried about the numbers.
I think it is awesome news and I have always felt really good about our chances with Hicks and Jeffcoat. Put D White back in the mix and we are rocking it.
I find it very hard to beleive that Mike Davis is looking at UT. He is from Skyline and we never get those guys. Maybe he is looking at A&M or OU. I don’t mind him at LSU.
R Favors being hurt this year
I wonder how OU has been treating him? Maybe that gave D. White less interst in them
Transparency of Adversity
When the going gets tough, the cracks in character begin to show. Some of Stoops comments towards players, injuries, etc have really shown an unseemly side to him. Testy, mean, defensive are not characteristics that endear recruits to programs. I am unsure whether this dry spell would be enough to deter players this year – but it may.
Good Point
It certainly does and I don’t think we’ve seen the worst of it yet. I mean when a HC goes to the media and talks aobut poayers not showing up for practice or being late for meetings and practice, it makes you wonder the true depth of the issues. I just can’t get it though. How do top prospects still get lulled into the hypnosis of ou?

I always wonder...
how much recruits really pay attention to stuff like that. I know that as an adult I would consider and weigh pros and cons of programs differently than I would have when I was a high school kid. I would have been much more likely to make an emotional decision as a 17 year old (ie: I’ve always loved Texas football, so that’s where I’m going), rather than considering the current roster, or coaching philosophy. Also, I know when these guys are studs in HS, they hear “We’ll let you compete for a starting position” and think that they will again be the best on the team. They have known nothing but athletic excellence, and have no reason to believe that they can’t beat out anyone. Case in point: USC recruits 5 star RBs every year. They all think they are going to be a superstar at USC, but when they get there, its a lot stiffer competition, and they dont get much playing time.

Normally I would agree
But recruits the caliber of White and Jeffcoat who can afford to be patient and look closely at all apects of a program could be a difference maker.
Correct me if I'm wrong.....
If we ( Tech ) lose Scotty Young it would be for baseball not football…..

Sounds about right
But like Marquise Goodwin, it’s possible Young could eventually play and take up a scholarship.

I read that this is all pay site spin
I think he is staying at QB at Tech, unless he perhaps get drafted. I don’t see him at Texas. Just my opinion.
I'd rather not see him at Texas either.
I think it would be waste behind Garrett.

Clogged Arteries
The QB positiion seems pretty well set with Gilbert starting, and Wood & McCoy coming in next year. It wouldn’t seem at all logical for another one to come in and add to the stew.
I think the same thing
Plus, UT’s a great place for baseball, if that’s the sport he wants to play. I have talked with a few guys who couldn’t believe a guy would rather go the baseball route (saying Samardzija, Drew Henson, and others were stupid for doing so), but the fact is that baseball pays a whole lot better than football in almost every case.
