Todd McShay on Sportscenter today - Defense....
So at lunch today I turned on Sportscenter and Todd McShay was on talking about Best CFB Team and Best CFB player:
He says Florida is the best CFB team, and that Texas lacks defense compared to Alabama and Florida... WTF?
I'm trying to find the video link now....
I'm fairly certain if we played either Florida or Alabama right now that we would win. I think we have a better and faster defense than Alabama easily, Florida is fast on defense but I believe we still top them out.

Todd McShay is quickly proving himself an idiot
He needs to stick to being a Mel Kiper wannabe and leave the college football discussion to someone who pays attention.

SEC homers
Will not be satisfied until we shut out Florida in Pasadena.

Anyone who questions the Texas D
Is irrelevant. That’s it.

Our D is like the great "No Name" defense for the '76 Dolphins, while Alabama's is like the defense of the 2000 Ravens
Both great, but very equal. The perception is that Alabama’s is better because they have more stars (Arenas, Cody, McClain).
Thats not to say we have no stars. Sergio Kindle and Earl Thomas are complete stars, but the Bama 3 have more national acclaim, whether they deserve it more or not.

100% Agreement here
When it’s all said and done, he might be the best defensive player on this team… and that is saying A LOT.

Best player plays for Tennessee???
Now i really know McShay has lost all of his marbles.
I believe ESPN needs to reevaluate their analysts for CFB: Holtz, May, McShay = Biased Crazy Fools.
I can only listen to Herbie and Robert Smith at the moment.

Who do you think the best plyer is, if it isn't Eric Berry?
It strikes me as quite sane to say that Eric Berry is the best defensive player in CFB.

I agree with BZ here.
Eric Berry is a bonafied stud. No one throws his way anymore which is why his highlight reels have been down in 2009.

Remember he's media...His #'s mean evrerything to his job.
Looking for ratings. ESPN knows they can stir up the message boards and websites by making certain remarks. McSahy knows to keep his reader #‘s up he has to say things that will keep fans on their toes and interacting online. I’m in PR it works…like magic.

Heard the same thing...
…and felt the same way. I think the question was “most complete” football team/player but I could be wrong. Blown away that he actually said defense was a weakness on the Texas team.

I love reading/hearing comments like this
There are a lot of people out there that believe Texas isn’t even in the same league as Florida/Bama. It’s 2005 all over again and I couldn’t be happier. Please, keep doubting this team. It’ll only make a Pasadena victory that much sweeter.

Now wouldn't it be weird...
If Tebow has a game getting 613 all purpose yards and ends up winning the Heisman. Florida then beats Bama and we shut down Tebow to under 70 yards and win the MNC in the last 20 seconds of the game with a Colt McCoy play of a lifetime on 4th and goal from the 5?
Honestly I want Colt to win the Heisman and break the curse by just destroying Florida.
I honestly think we can beat either one of them.
by orangetower on Nov 18, 2009 3:40 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
seems like
the Heisman is headed in the direction of Alabama’s RB. It seems that the “too many INT’s” label has been sticking to Colt and Tebow, coupled with less yardage in the air and on the ground compared to last year. I believe that Colt deserved the Heisman more last year and the the Bradford Heisman was undeserved…as was the OU title game birth last season.
The good news is that Texas will remain #2 in the BCS going into the title game, will probably be without a Heisman…this will keep the team hungry. I like us as the underdog in Pasadena, just like in 2005. Gives us something to prove.

If Colt
Has to compete against Ingram and his own performance from last year then the Heisman is a total joke. If the voters are going to look at last year then where the Norman is Ingram’s last year performance? Colt will break the all time record and it will be this year that he does it. He just needs to keep having fun and winning.
I think Ingram and the Bama run game will be exposed and implode in their divisional championship game against Florida’s defense. Florida can stuff the box and cover 1 on 1 with their D-backs and yes, even against Julio Jones.

The national media
Wants to finally give the Heisman to an Alabama player. Of all the great top-10 college programs of all time, Alabama is the only one that has never had a Heisman winner. With all the great teams and great players they’ve had, the best finish they’ve ever had in the Heisman voting was third (David Palmer, 1993).
Not to take anything away from Ingram. The kid’s had a terrific year, and he’s only a true sophomore! But I get the sense from the idiots on ESPN and elsewhere that, “Alabama’s never had a Heisman winner? Really?”
What would really be ironic if Ingram were to win is that the Alabama fan base, for all of its many, many faults, really doesn’t care that much. Going back to the Bryant days, team goals supersede individual awards. Always. While every fan base in America says that, Alabama fans actually walk that particular walk.
I still think Colt will win the award. And you know what? I’ve been around the Alabama fans for so long, I really don’t care.

No Worries
With this crazy BCS system – the only thing you can ask for is take all the conjecture and get a chance to prove it on the field. Win out – and we have that opporutnity.
As far as comparing our defense to Alabama and Florida’s – it obviously would mean little as they match up with the other team’s offense.

I can only stomach Fowler and Herbie.
May is a doosh. McShay is a doosh. Holtz is simply senile.

Corso and Holtz are just mascots at this point
I don’t actually mind them. They’re like the hosts on 24/7 cable news channels: they’re there for entertainment, not information or analysis.

I like Corso for his entertainment factor...GameDay is the very best...the chemistry is impressive.
Holtz, as mentioned earlier…is just lost with where the game is today.

our first team defense
tends to score more points than it allows. That’s good enough for me.

The disrespect...
Plays right into our hands, just like 2005. I think in the end Colt gets the Heisman and the we all get the National Championship!
Play like you mean it...

Anyone know
How Heisman winners play in the first game immediately after winning the award? I wonder if it becomes a burden to have to “prove” it, and you become a bigger target for your next opponent, and therefore perform worse.

It's been a bad record recently
Leinart was the last one to do well afterwards, as he led USC to a championship after winning the Heisman. But then the Heisman went on a cold streak: Bush won it and Vince-led UT beat USC; Tebag fell assbackwards into it, and UF fell to a mediocre Michigan; Bradford won it, and OU lost to UF last year.

Don't forget the incomparable Troy Smith.
by ctex80 on Nov 19, 2009 10:39 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Ah, right
That was another instance. So it goes like this, right?
Leinart – won NC game
Bush – lost NC game
Leinart – lost NC game
Smith – lost NC game
Tebow – lost second-tier bowl game (Capital One, IIRC)
Bradford – lost NC game
Wow, seems like the best way to win the trophy is to be a paper tiger in the national title discussion. Maybe Tebow should win it again.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 19, 2009 11:54 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I have a theory
That a NC championship game will feature two teams, one who got there based on the exceptional performance of a few individuals (and are considered better because of them), and one who got there because of exceptional teamwork. The individual(s) on the one team will get the awards, but the better “team” will get the W come bowl season. I feel like that has happened in most of the games listed above. Texas was better than Leinart/Bush (although there is no taking away the contribution of one individual that played for Texas that day, so this isn’t the best example), Florida was better than Troy Smith, Michigan was better than Tebow (this wasn’t a NC game, but it fits), Florida was better than Bradford. I’m not sure if I’m on to something or just imagining it, so I can’t say it is prescriptive, but it is a pattern I’ve noticed.

That is Interesting
Who do you think has the better team between Florida and Alabama?
by orangetower on Nov 19, 2009 2:24 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Hard to say
But I think that Florida is just straight up better. One would be inclined to say that Alabama has a better team because they are more run focused with an adequate passing game that does the job and Florida seems to be lacking the chemistry of previous years, but the Florida D is unquestionably one of the best in the nation, and the offense is still much better than Alabama’s despite whatever perceived regression they’ve been through. I think that Alabama is much luckier to be undefeated right now than Florida or Texas, and that Florida is going to win the SEC CG by at least 14.
If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

If that happens (+14)
The media slobber-fest of the fighting Tebows of UF will be no different than the slobber-fest of ’05.

Until now
I’ve been hoping for an undefeated Alabama/Florida matchup in the SECCG — still do; as a fan of college football, that would be terrific.
Until now, I’ve been hoping for an Alabama win in that game, for obvious reasons. Assuming Texas wins out, I’d have a chance to change my mantra from “0-7-1 all-time” to “0-8-1 all-time” for the first time since 1982. This time, I’d have some t-shirts made.
But after reading these comments, I’m beginning to see another side of this. If Texas were to beat Florida, our defense would be cloaked in glory forever for defeating the second son of Jehovah himself. And our offense would be lauded for defeating a truly terrific Florida defense.
If Texas were to beat Alabama, our offense would also be lauded for defeating a truly terrific Alabama defense, but the national media would look at our defense and collectively say, “But were they ever really tested? Isn’t it a shame that St. Timothy didn’t get the opportunity to eviscerate Will Muschamp, as only the second son of Jehovah can?”
As for who has the better defense, we won’t know—unless Texas completely shuts down the Florida offense, or vice-versa. At least in terms of the national perspective…
