Colt tops Herbstreet's Heisman list
There is no denying the strong effect that ESPN has on today's college football landscape. One of their more respected analysts lists Colt at the top of his Heisman list.

Let's be honest, the race is between Ingram, McCoy and Tebow.
Right now, list is:
1.) Ingram
2.) McCoy
3.) Tebow
The player from the winner of ’Bama vs. Florida will likely be neck and neck with McCoy if things end up going like we all hope they will. As for who wins? I have no clue. My vote is for Ingram right now.

Based on what?
Yeah he’s a good back, but he’s playing on a run dominant team and is THEE guy. Cody Johnson or Tre Newton could have his numbers in the same system.
He’s only a sophomore and what has he done off field to warrant a 1st place vote over McCoy?
Ingram has played in the bigger games and has performed well in them.
EX: 150 rush yds (180 total) versus Va Tech.
144 rush yds (174 total) versus LSU.
Colt just hasn’t had to play in many big games except for OU and Oklahoma State. He didn’t perform well against OU (yes I know he was recovering from being sick and had a bad thumb) and while he had a decent game against Oklahoma State. Ingram has performed well on the biggest stages.
McCoy plays in a pass dominant team and he is THE guy and he’s just not performing to a level. He’s on and off too much but lately has been better.
Ingram has rarely fumbled or cost him team (I think he’s only fumbled once this year?) and Cotl has been throwing a decent amount of INTs.
Both are playing for the best teams this year so I give the edge to Ingram right now for performing when the lights are the brightest. It sucks that the Big 12 is having a down year and Colt can’t prove it during the big stage, but the two games you have to look at this year are two games Colt wasn’t great.

I hope you're not suggesting that Ingram has played in more big games that Colt...
It’s all opinion but I tend to think that the “star” on the Alabama football team is it’s defense and it’s defensive minded head coach…replace Ingram with another quality back and the Alabama football team still finds a way to go undefeated. Replace Colt McCoy on this Texas team? Not so much. I seem to remember Heisman voters a few years back were infatuated with a certain running back on an undefeated USC team and snubbed a certain quarterback from an undefeated Texas team. How well do you think those Heisman voters felt their award was represented that year on “the big stage”?
No one athlete has separated themselves from the pack. There’s been no “Heisman moment” and there are many who argue that the best college athletes aren’t even in the discussion. The award long ago lost it’s luster and meaning. If Colt gets it, it will be for his incredible performance last year, his body of work (all time winningest, etc.) and his leadership and class playing on an undefeated BCS champion caliber Texas team. I’m sure I’m leaving something out.
How can you assume they can just "plug" someone into the backfield?
You just can’t make those types of assumptions. I hate it when people make those assumptions. Where would Colt be without Shipley? You can argue that Shipley is the reason Colt has decent statistics this year (and Vice versa for Shipley). So, in reality, Shipley is the more deserving of the two as of right now.
The fact is, Colt has underperformed (stats wise) in the two biggest games of the year for us (OU and OSU). If you look at Ingram, he has ran well against his best competitors.
The star for Texas has also been it’s defense. If our defense didn’t keep us in games due to our slow starts on offense, we could’ve had some very close calls and also losts games.
I’m all for Colt winning the Heisman, I love the guy as our QB, but he has yet to shine.
Colt is getting better. He’s completing more of his passes and is starting to stretch the field. But as of right now, from the first game to now, Ingram looks the better of the Heisman candidate.

We Will See IN the Championship Games
Florida vs Bama and Texas vs NU/KS
Florida will stuff the Bama run game, and the Bama D will contain Tebow.
The Big XII Championship Game will be Colt’s chance to shine.

If not for a blocked kick, his fumble would have cost his team the game against Tennessee.
Just like Colt's INT versus Oklahoma. If not for Colt's tackle we could've easily lost against OU.

True...
Colt threw and interception that if taken back for a TD would have hurt us, but he also made the play to keep the TD from happening. The two situations aren’t quite the same.
I agree the situations aren't exactly the same...
but in the end both situations didn’t hurt the candidate. While Colt made a nice tackle, that game was won by our defense.

But then Bama's record is even more a product of their defense than our's is...
Ingram may be their entire offense and his numbers might be consistent but he has only scored 10 TDs. If his team had even an average defense to go with his lack of scoring Bama probably isn’t undefeated. Colt’s numbers may be down but he has done enough to help blow out most of our opponents.
That said, I am not sure who should be the Heisman frontrunner. The award has no real explicit set of criteria to determine the winner. Ingram may be the most consistent RB and player this year, but his numbers are far from electric. So perhaps he is gets his votes from those who vote for the best performing player on the best team. The stat-head voters will likely find ample reason to avoid him since his numbers are pretty weak historically, but they will probably end up scattering their votes to the 4 winds of weaker conference system QBs like Moore and Keenum. Colt will attract some of the voters who vote for the best QB of the best team. He will also likely attract a lot of the voters who are willing to vote on lifetime achievement. Unfortunately for Colt, Tebow will also draw votes from both of those groups. Ingram has been good, but far from impressive in my book. Colt hasn’t been that impressive either, but he does have lifetime achievement stats that are more impressive than anything any individual has accomplished this year.
Agreed
but with the way people pick their heisman vote, that play will help Colt because of the tackle he made. It isn’t the typical highlight reel shot, but it also isn’t something you normally see from a quarterback.
plus i thought
the receiver ran the wrong route – broke the wrong way, meaning colt put the ball where the receiver was supposed to be

If Colt lights it up against Nebraska
and the UF/Bama game is ugly (which is undoubtedly will be), I think Colt will be in great position to take home the hardware.
I won’t be too torn up about it if he doesn’t though. The Eyes of Texas are focused on a single goal and it’s not the heisman.
