David Greene gets Colt McCoy just right
This weekend Colt will set another NCAA record, one that will probably never be broken. Manning - Greene - McCoy. That's CFB royalty for ya.Greene said he admires McCoy for his ability to beat opponents with his arm and with his feet. "He has to do a lot for their offense but he always seems to be under control," he said. "He doesn't seem to have a lot of ego. He just looks like a good old country boy who enjoys playing football and winning."
I'm happy for Colt and for Horns fans that the record is going to be broken at home at the end of a stellar career. Anyone else see Colt as our OC in about 10 years?

Never be broken?
You’re probably right, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility that another guy could start four years and do it. If Colt leads UT to win out, that puts him at 46, so aspiring record-breakers would have to start four years and avereage better than 11.5 wins per season. That’s incredible. This makes it especially likely that the record wouldn’t be attainable to QBs for teams that don’t play in conferences with championship games, barring future expansion of the season or implementation of a playoff format. It would also mean that QB would have to win the conference championship or bowl game, or likely both, in order to beat it as well.
Unless a team plays non-con games at Hawaii or the NCAA expands the regular or post-season, the maximum possible wins per season for a team in a championship-game conference is 14, and that’s with a perfect record. The maximum there is therefore 56 wins. That leaves some margin for error, but keep in mind that any error in the regular season makes it a lot harder to get to the conference championship, which means that more than one loss in a season often means a third lost opportunity for a win.
This and the completion percentage seem like records destined to stand for a long, long time, unless the NCAA changes regular or post-season season length.

Colt is the man
but frankly, we lost some games that we shouldn’t have when he was our qb
(kstate x2, aggie x2)… I’m not blaming him, but my point is that I wouldn’t say that this record will probably never be broken.
However, this is probably one of the greatest “individual” accomplishments out there, and I will be at the game to witness history. Can’t wait.

I don't blame Colt...
for the two of those losses (against KState on the road and A&M at home). In one he was injured on the first drive, and in the next one (the following week) there was no way he should have been out there playing.
I’m flying in from Colorado and can’t wait for Saturday night!
Flying in from Balt/DC!
I can’t believe the tickets wifey got me for my birthday ended up being for Senior Day and Colt’s record-breaker. This sort of makes up for when Nolan Ryan got bumped forward in the rotation a little, so the tickets my dad got ended up being for the game after the 5000th strikeout.

The odds of Chris Peterson staying at Boise for the next 2 years, and Moore breaking the record are about the same – with Moore’s odds being lower. Not good in either case.

It looks like BSU gets 13 (+1 for bowl) in seasons they play at Hawaii
So if Moore plays all four seasons and starts every game, including bowls, that puts him at 54 starts. BSU is 10-0 so far under Moore, so that means they would need to go 37-7 or better over the remaining games. That’s the standard to break Colt’s record if UT wins all Colt’s remaining games.

Ugh
Big brainfart. I was thinking Moore’s still a freshman. No-coffee moment.
Anyway, yeah, his record could stand at 26-1 after this season. That would mean he’d have to win another 21 out of 27 (77.8%) in two more seasons to beat Colt’s record. That’s not all that far-fetched. Hmm. Well, time to start rooting against Boise State!

I'm skeptical for a few reasons
1. Colt has been remarkably healthy throughout his career – or at least played through injury. Even a relatively minor injury could derail most challengers.
2. Chris Peterson has to look very attractive to many, many BCS programs at the moment, and Boise State can’t compete monetarily with many schools – not even Kansas or Boston College. Breaking in a new coach, no matter how talented, probably means 3 losses or more.
3. Moore doesn’t appear to be close to the NFL prototype physically, but it’s hardly a given that any QB will play 4 years if they have a chance at few NFL paychecks.

Addendum
UT (either UT) could easily match Peterson’s salary to be an offensive coordinator. There’s almost zero chance of that happening, but in starry eyed fantasy land…

How about BSU's last OC-turned-HC?
He made a mighty fine lightning rod at Colorado, no?
by burntorangehorn on Nov 19, 2009 8:19 AM CST up reply actions
Only if this isn’t a work of fiction.
Also, I find the Hawk’s overriding nepotism something that makes it more difficult to evaluate everything about Colorado. Do his players truly respect his decisions? Has he been making the best decisions for the benefit of the program? These are things I don’t think we can reasonably infer.

Yeah, but think about it: while his offensive coaching skills are questionable these days, his ability to act like a lightning rod are second only to Greg Davis these days.

Kellen Moore
Great point on Kellen Moore, he has a chance to have 26 wins after this season, I believe. Also, that Boise State team has something like two seniors that are starters on that team. They should absolutely be loaded next year, meaning 38 wins is not out of the question after his junior year. That would put him awfully close to even the most optimistic record for Colt McCoy.
he'll break it, sure... but
Who’s gonna mention a WAC team record in the same league as a BCS conference? sure if we played a WAC schedule every year, Colt would probably have 54 wins, with a just a couple random stumbles i’d assume. Seriously, once Colt sets the record, we can etch it in stone. Kellen Moore is pretty much Irrelevant to us.
The same NCAA...
who hasn’t come up with a sensible championship system in over 100 years of existence? I’ll keep track of my own records, thank you very much.
Can you come up with a sensible championship system?
I sure haven’t seen one proposed.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 19, 2009 11:33 AM CST up reply actions
Never gonna happen. I think I've given up on this.
1) MLS has a team in the championship game that finished the season 11-12-7. Disgusting. The arguement could be made that there are only 15 teams while there are 8 playoff spots, but the truth is, that’s just bad. Wouldn’t want a chance at that happening in College.
2) More conferences would have to go to a 12 team format with a conference championship game, or all would have to abandon the championship game. That will never happen because of the money involved in the championship game tie-ins. In addition, the conferences that have less than 12 teams (I’m looking at you big televen) are probably not going to want to do this. They have plenty of opportunity, but haven’t yet. That leaves me to ask: why not? I just don’t see this happening any time soon.
3) The bowl system. Too may companies stand to lose money by not having the bowl games. The ad money greatly benefits them (otherwise they wouldn’t do it) and the money generated benefits the schools, conferences, bowl committee’s, the city that hosts the bowls, etc. Any playoff system would initially be at the expense of the bowls.
In a perfect world, if I had my way, I’d do the following:
- Make conferences expand/contract to 12 (logistical nightmare, I know) and force a conference championship game.
- Conference Champions (8 total) get auto entry into BCS tourney*
- Use current BCS rankings system to designate seeds
- 4 at large bids based on BCS rankings
- Top 4 teams in BCS rankings get bye week (regardless of conference affiliation).
- Teams not making it to playoffs still get to play in the lesser level bowl games (Alamo, Outback, Holiday, Peach, etc) if they meet the 6 win criteria
*BCS is not going away, and for the most part, I think they normally get it right. You can point to many instances where it’s possible the BCS failed, but it’s mainly due to the fact that there isn’t a playoff. Let the BCS stay and think they’re still important. That’s the only way this thing gets done.
Further to the point above, having 8 12-team conferences leaves 96 teams (out of 120 currently). Minor conferences will still exist, and then there’s always ND, but I guess maybe you could expand to 9 12-team conferences and 3 at large bids… Either way, I don’t think that would cause too many problems other than shuffling.

If the NFL doesn't pan out for Colt
then I’d definitely like to see him back with Texas in some way. But for now I’ll enjoy his last few games, hopefully put a nice big exclamation point on an excellent collegiate career and then hope he will end up with a pretty good pro team that has the talent to go far in the post season.

Good quote from Greene
“When you get right down to it, this record is a team record. I don’t care how good a quarterback you are, if you don’t play on great teams, you will never have a chance to win 40 games.”
Well said, and a real testament to Mack and the Texas program. We are — quite simply — the best.
Good to see that David Greene
Is still a class act.
Isn’t it funny that we never talk about the “winningest running back of all-time” or “winningest middle linebacker of all-time?” It’s all about the QB!
