UCF Preview?

I watched what I could of the UCF game last night against Marshall and gathered it was a nail biter with :23 comeback to win, but wasn't able to gauge their level of play much. While I'm not at all worried about the Horns next week, I was hoping to see a quick run down of what we could maybe capitalize on and use a momentum builder heading into the remaining three games. And I read that we won't have a preview this week as apparently "no one on that campus gives a damn."

I'm thinking we have an opportunity to not only build momentum, but give some more ample play time to GG, Newton, etc and get some reps in.

Anyone have some bullet point insight into the game?

Thanks.

I was just kidding about that.

I’m sure someone at Central Florida cares about their football team. Or Florida Atlantic, if you talk to Roddrick Muckelroy. (As long they prepare for the right team, I don’t care what he calls them.)

We are trying to get one together. If it comes together, it should be up either Thursday or Friday.

Preview coming

One of the Orlando Sentinel reporters has agreed to help with a preview. Peter will have it up later this week.

From grazing through the stats.

Central Florida does some good things, almost all of them defensively or on special teams. They cover punts and kickoffs well. They get to the quarterback, particularly Jarvis Geathers and Brandon Miller. They stop the run extremely well, ranking in the top 10 in the country in giving up the fewest yards per attempt. Their secondary isn’t as strong, however.

The quarterback isn’t really any good and none of the skill position players stand out on offense. If they score, Muschamp will be angry. Really angry.

In limited viewing

I saw pretty much what you did. Although, I didn’t get to see much of their defense, what I did see was that running on them was difficult (for Marshall) while passing on them was pretty easy. It’s also hard to determine where the skill level is because it seemed to me that (when I started watching) Marshall was playing not to lose instead of playing to win.

As for their offense, horrible. Marshall absolutely gave that game to UCF.
1) Their O-line is swiss cheese.
2) Their receivers don’t strike me as very good route runners.
3) Their QB didn’t seem to throw well under pressure.

I think our defense will have a field day. I’m calling for at least 3 interceptions. Lamar Houston and Sam Acho will be in the backfield on almost every down (causing the poor throws which lead to the INT’s).

I think the offense will be fine, but not spectacular (I hope I’m wrong). Their defense is decent, but we should be able to score at least 35 on them.

depth chart

Last week people were mystified when the vs. Mizzou depth chart was never replaced by the vs. Okie State depth chart. I imagine this week’s depth chart will come as an even bigger surprise, as it now shows the one for vs. Tech.

I will throw out a preview

most likely tomorrow. I’ve been fighting Swine Flu for the past week and its certainly kept me under wraps, but I’ll get one thrown together.

Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

Thanks for the well-wishes. I’ll get it going tonight.

UCF - Ultimate Test

For the focus of the Horns. With back to back road wins against key conference foes, this game should represent the ultimate let down opportunity.

Gotta say though, the coaching job this year has been just masterful, and I am expecting laser focus for both UCF and Baylor. These kids and coaches are on a mission.

Running the Ball

This could be one of those games where we struggle to run the ball and there ensues a bunch of “we’re doomed, no running game” crying for the next week. I still think we win easily.

by BatesHorn on Nov 2, 2009 2:55 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

How then shall we capitalize on this?

We never want to make the mistake of getting too cocky and, like realmccoy says, allow an opportunity to be let down. But, if/when we do get our margin in the clear, what do you suppose our best way to take advantage of the situation is?

If the goon squad can make ’em bleed, so to speak, who needs to get some more reps in? And who should we give the most rest to? I hope to see Aaron Williams sit this one out all together until at least KU.

Again without getting ahead of ourselves, I also want to see much more GG this time. I’m not at all concerned about Colt packing any stats at this point – not like that is ever the Horns’ style to do so.

Don't Think Soldier Boy Dancing Will Happen

UCF put a huge scare into the ’Horns in Orlando a couple years ago. I know it was a big atmosphere, grand opening of their stadium (Central Florida in August without water fountains, nice). And I know our guys were really not focused that year, a few off field distractions, a general thuggish attitude on the team that had them line dancing on the sidelines instead of being focused on winning a football game. And we barely survived.

The Knights will be reminded by their coach that they can hang with the big boys and that we’re beatable. But this ain’t the team from a couple years ago. Texas is mature and determined and not going to let any directional U stay in the game with them. I call this one a blowout, maybe not as big as UTEP, but not far, either. This is a style points, make a statement game.

Glad UCF won last night, though. They’ll be 5-4 when we’re done with them, I like having that on the resume more than dropping them to 4-5.

Winning out will take care of things for us, but just curious, do we want Aggie to keep winning, including beating OU so they come into the Thanksgiving game at 8-3 (maybe busting into the top 25), or do we want OU to win out finish 9-3 and count as a better win for BCS?

Not capable

of hoping OU wins anything, ever. It’s not always BCS-logical, but I just enjoy watching Sooners lose too much. Aggies? It’d be nice give them their 4th loss and create a bit more sting. But at this point, I’m not too concerned about our SOS and looking better with our victims winning out. It’s win out or bust and that’s it for me.

Hate For Aggie and Sooner

After last season’s major BCS screwing and OU arrogantly pretending they were more worthy of the title than Texas I swore I’d always hate on OU and relish every single loss they ever get tagged with. Including screw “conference pride” nonsense.

But, after the 2006 and 2007 losses to Aggie where they were thugs, blind-siding our QB after the play was over or other equally unsportsmanship I swore I’d always hate on TAMU and relish every single loss they ever get tagged with. Including screw conference pride nonsense.

When they match up I’m truly at a loss, how can both teams lose the same game?

Texas should win out. Iowa WILL lose a game. Cincinnati WILL lose a game. Of course Alabama or Florida will have to lose, but they’ve both got enough competitive games left I wouldn’t be surprised if both get tagged with a loss.

That would leave Texas v. either a 1-loss SEC team (LSU, UF, or ’Bama), v. Boise St, v. TCU or v. a 1-loss Oregon in Pasadena.

I love a lot of these potential matchups:

- Gators would continue the replay of the 2005 season: blow up the “dynasty” “greatest QB/team ever” nonsense – again!
- Tigers would allow us to beat the other team with two BCS NC’s this decade (UF other), giving us two head-to-head wins in bowl games during the 2000’s against them, helping UT’s case for best team of the decade.
- Frogs would be just plain Texas insanity, SWC love in the NC, I love it!!
- Ducks would be a great payback for the 2000 Holiday Bowl we let get away.
- Tide would be interesting, not many matchups between two teams of lore (last in 1982), and we’ve never lost to them (7-0-1).
- Broncos would be the lousiest of them all, but beating them when Sooner couldn’t has its own charm.

Why is Cincy losing

such a sure bet? Pitt is their big challenge left and they’re still the favorites there. Cincy has a much better shot at winning out than Iowa does – I don’t understand why you just dismiss them outright. Before this weekend, I thought the Hawks would lose at the Horseshoe, but after that performance I think they could lose to any Big 10 bottom-feeder including Northwestern. Cincinnati is not on that level at all.

Agree that OU-A&M is one of those games you wish that no one would win.

Had more to do with Akina than Solda' Boy

I think our 07 woes had more to do with Akina’s schemes and bad linebacker play than Solda’ Boy

OU

IMHO, we have definitively established that OU losing is always a good thing. From a kharmic perspective, if nothing else.

by BatesHorn on Nov 3, 2009 10:03 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I would rather they get their bad luck spread out...

It seems like OU gets their bad luck over a short period in a single season, while we get ours spread out over several seasons. While I enjoyed their 8-5 season back in 2005, if I had known we would let them basically back-into 3 conference titles due to bad luck on our part, I would have given them a 10-win season (they were never going to beat us that year) and exchanged that for getting back the 2 conference titles we should have gotten in ‘06 and last year. I just hope that we don’t get bitten by the bad luck bug for awhile and we can amass our own long conference championship streak at OU’s expense.

UCF's secondary is awful

Colt will be able to throw downfield at will as long as Greg Davis lets him throw.

In-VINCE-able.
