2009 Horns VS 2005 Horns....are we better? Equal? Worse?

It appears to me that the current Longhorns have a better defense than in 2005. It also appears (at least to me) that our offense doesn't produce as well as the 2005 Vince Young led Team did. Obviously Vince was unbelievable as QB, especially his running/scrambling and Colt is equally unbelievable in his passing accuracy.

My question is, has anybody done a statistical analysis comparing the teams through 10 games ? Not that its going to prove anything or be a predictor of future success , but it might be fun to look at the comparative stats.

Go Horns !

Vince Young

Keep the same team we have currently and insert Vince Young instead of Colt McCoy and you have an argument that is close. I love Colt as much as the next guy, and think he is probably the best quarterback in the game currently, but there has never been, nor will ever be, a player that was like Vince once he got his career rolling.

The supporting lineup is extremely close sans quarterback. It’s hard to say for certain, but I’d probably take the 2009 Defense if I had my choice. They don’t have the star power of individual accomplishments that the 2005 team had, but they are amazing as a team.

Agree

Absolutely agree. The reason we won the NC is # 10,case closed.Colt can’t carry that weight.I dearly hope he can do what he does at a high enough level to win another one.

understatement

That O-Line was just nasty for a whole different reason this one is (at times).

This is a big difference as well.

2009 D wins, 2005 O wins in blowout

The 2005 squad dominated opponents in a fashion the 2009 team hasn’t yet shown. Only one slow start that year (Pokes) and one lazy performance (aggy).

Pure dominance

Most games were never even close.

I love Colt, but VY was a freak who is arguably the best athlete in the history of the sport.

Watch out, I bite.

While I am not ready to make this comparison just yet as the season hasn't ended...

Year-to-date 2005 wins in almost every aspect except for Linebacker and possibly receiver.

Anyways, I’d hold off until the end of the year..but right now 2005 team was better. VY was just other-worldly.

2005

In a game between the two teams, 2005 blows out 2009.

It’s the Vince Factor, which permeated the team, and an Oline more nasty than nice, among many other differences.

by utexex on Nov 20, 2009 1:28 PM CST reply actions

agree

The Vince Factor says it all. Even if ‘09s stout run D could make VY one dimensional, I still think he would find a way to win. Some ’05 stats: VY averaged 9.34 yards per passing attempt and 6.77 yards per rushing attempt. Texas averaged 8.5 yards every time Vince took a snap and didn’t hand the ball off.

Interesting thought

But we don’t need the 2005 team to win the MNC this year. The 2009 tema can do it.

I believe that 2005 VY led team was the best ever at UT. This years D might top as the best unit ever.

by orangetower on Nov 20, 2009 1:42 PM CST reply actions

I agree with nearly all the preceding

But it’s an argument for argument’s sake — If we don’t lose, the 2009 team is the equal of 2005. If we lose one of the next two, somehow get in the MNC game and win it, this team is STILL the equal of 2005.

I don’t always agree with Mack Brown, but he’s right when he says what matters is to survive and move on. Emphasis on survive. Stats, style points are so much dust in the wind. Just find a way to keep that zero in the loss column!!!!!!

When we talk defense, let's not forget about that 2005 secondary.

Michael Huff, Aaron Ross, Michael Griffin and Cedric Griffin? Are you kidding me? That’s four starting DB’s in the nfl right now!

That defensive line was pretty stout, too. Don’t get me wrong- I love our current defense, but I don’t think I can automatically assume our D now is better. I think our coordinator is better, hands down, but I think the talent levels may be similar.

by junglerules on Nov 20, 2009 3:33 PM CST reply actions

Don't forget Tarell Brown

Ross was the nickel back. Brown was the starter. I realize Ross is better paid now but Brown is an occasional starter for the 49ers in his own right.

by andmyster on Nov 20, 2009 3:48 PM CST up reply actions

I completely agree

There is nothing our secondary like to do more back then then to hit players in the mouth. I loved watching the 2005 secondary play. We also had Aaron Harris holding it down at the linebacker spot. And Roderique Wright, Tim Crowder, and Brian Robinson on the DLine. Our secondary now is real good, and the scary thing is they are young and will only get better but there is no way they can touch the secondary in 2005 or our defense for that matter, at least now. Do you think we wouldve 20 points to UL Monroe in 2005? Put it this way we beat Colorado 70-3… in the Big 12 Championship Game

by tim11ut on Nov 20, 2009 4:24 PM CST up reply actions

Griffin Boys made that team on D....

I would say that the 2005 D would shut down the current offense……

2009 v 2005

where’s the TE been this year? that posit has been MIA most of the year. Look at the 2005 team and how they used it. TE, key to several wins that season. We need a go-to TE this year and beyond.

See: Blaine Irby's injury

It’s not that we don’t have one, he just is suffering from Shipley-itis. Can’t seem to get on the field because of injuries.

if his career arc matches that of Shipley's

Then I’m find with how these past 2 years have played out for Irby

by andmyster on Nov 20, 2009 5:53 PM CST up reply actions

So, concensus seems to think 2005 would easily beat 2009....

Maybe so, but comparing defenses seems to paint a close picture. Defense wins championships, although our 2005 defense only stopped USC when it absolutely had to. No question on the offense….Vince Young led offense is much better than our current line up. Even so, is the current team good enough to win the MNC????

How do we stack up against Florida or Alabama……I think better against Alabama, but Florida’s recent coasting may be swaying that opinion. Either way, if the stars align and we don’t let down, its going to be a helluva game.

Can't get enough of that cowbell !!!

defense
our 2005 defense only stopped USC when it absolutely had to

While this is kinda true, you have to remember that USC had two heisman winners in their backfield. Their running backs were reggie bush and lendale white, who both would be 1st round picks if not for whites off-the-field issues. their recievers dwayne jarrett and steve smith are both playing in the nfl with steve smith breaking out this year. and their line had many nfl players as well. plus our defense made a big impact on the game beyond yards given up, i.e. griffins pick by the goal line

by tim11ut on Nov 21, 2009 12:09 AM CST up reply actions

Just ask yourself this:

Which of the two teams wouldve had a better chance against that 2005 USC squad? Do you really truly believe that this team wouldve allowed USC to score that amount of points led by Lendale Crybaby White? I honestly dont know, but what I do know is that this year’s offense couldnt compete in a shootout with that offense.

I don't really think its fair

to hold this team to the standard of 2005, which might have been the most talented cfb team of all time. I think we are the best team in the country right now, but the 05 team was mind-blowingly good.

You have to go with the 2005 squad..

the VY factor alone makes this an easy choice. I would say the defenses are somewhat comparable. But the offenses are not even close. That 2005 team was an absolute juggernaut. The 2009 version is a very good team, one that I feel is Championship caliber, but not 2005 good.
