Game Preview & Open Thread: Pittsburgh vs. Texas in CBE Classic Final
Pittsburgh Panthers at Texas Longhorns, Nov 24, 2009 9:25 PM CST
Game #4: Pittsburgh Panthers (4-0) vs No. 3 Texas Longhorns (3-0)
9:25 p.m. * Sprint Center * Kansas City, MO
TV: ESPN2 / Radio: 98.1 FM
Very quick Keys to the Game:
1. Remember the Big Fella: The more Dexter Pittman touches the ball, the better. This is both on the Texas guards to play in the halfcourt through Dexter as it is on Pittman to make himself available and keep his defender on his back.
2. Limit the Turnovers: Texas is turning the ball over on 22.6% of their possessions, good for 228th in the country. That is horrible and unacceptable for a team this talented.
3. Keep the Focus: We saw last night what this team is capable of when they are focused. When focused on defense: 26-13 in the first half and 47-22 and the second half. When they lost focus, forgot about Pittman, and consistenly overran or didn't find shooters: 25-12 Iowa.
Pittsburgh is a much better team than is Iowa and I expect this to be a close game throughout. If Texas were as talented but had more experience at the guard spots, then this one wouldn't be close. But until the Longhorns gain that experience, limit the silly freshman plays, and remember that they are an inside-out team first, then these type of games will be challenges.
I expect a hard fought and physical 40 minutes. Prediction: Texas sinks enough free throws to pull away late, 74-68.

Great stuff AW
This football game is not even close to being over, how much of the game do we get to see?
"I don't ever miss free throws. I'm like 100-percent from the free throw line. I just don't think about missing and if you think about missing you're going to miss. I just take my time and know I'm going to make it and I do," McClellan said.
This is terrible
Every review, every incomplete pass, every first down, every turnover is just killing me. I fully expect to miss the first half. Why is it that ESPN doesn’t understand that football games take more than three hours? Why do fans of an important national program have to miss their team play because of two teams that don’t matter at all? it’s bad enough during basketball season to miss parts of games every week because they run over, but to have to wait for a football game to finish while waiting for a basketball game, which moves much more quickly, is just awful. Give me some elephant tranquilizers, please.

Furthermore
Why couldn’t Iowa have at least put up enough of a fight that it was close at the end so they could go into “foul every time down the court” mode? Please, a little help Hawkeyes. But none forthcoming.
by Wescott Eberts (GoBR) on Nov 24, 2009 8:42 PM CST up reply actions
That was the first thing I did
Turned it on ESPN2, realized this game was not going to get over soon enough. Then I turned it on ESPNU to see if Iowa could put up a fight….no luck either way.
I also don’t know if I have ever seen so many incomplete passes, I just hope that they get the game on some other station…that probably won’t happen though

Texas has missed some easy shots. Pitt has made some deep 3’s and had the 1 nice run to end the half. Texas has handled themselves VERY WELL on the glass against a team that’s known for being extremely physical (albeit without their guys from last year). I think the flow of play is much more promising that the actual score.

Nice move by brown!
"I don't ever miss free throws. I'm like 100-percent from the free throw line. I just don't think about missing and if you think about missing you're going to miss. I just take my time and know I'm going to make it and I do," McClellan said.
Brown can't convert the FT
my goodness.
We are freaking 10-20 from the FT line.

51 all, under 12
Starting to actually look like a basketball game with a little flow.
Texas killing ourselves from the line. Need to get Pittman back in soon, start making free throws, and attack the rim—too much settling for jumpers.

Nice look from Dex
James with the and 1

Wow bad shot selection from Hamilton
But it goes down, that is why he has so much upside

Hamilton makes an off-balanced jumper
56-51. Keep playing this D and we could pull away. Nice to see Hamilton in there.

Nice spurt, 63-54 Horns
Hamilton with two tough makes and Mason and Brown doing a great job attacking the rim.

Four fouls on Pittman
but I wouldn’t bench him. He needs to learn to play with foul trouble.

More poor shot selection
by Hamilton. This one he didn’t make, though, and now hearing it from Barnes.

Strong finish
Up 13 pts with two minutes left.
Balbay was fantastic all game, James was quietly solid, Pittman made a difference when he was on the floor, and we saw more energy and agressiveness from Bradley.
--AW--
Balbay is the floor leader of this team for sure
as I type this, he just created a three for Bradley. Probably his best game as a Longhorn.

Horns Win O'Reilly CBE Classic, hurray.
78-62. Horns win again going away. Game was much closer than 16 pts but a quality win by the youth Longhorns.
Too late for a full recap. Enjoy it.

If it is bad ...
there’s where you get Lucas’ minutes, unfortunately.
as funny as it is to say, this team has a long way to go offensively
sure we have plenty of guys that can put the ball in the hoop, but as a unit, Texas is raw. this is a young team that is improving, but they need to really work on getting everyone on the same page. I love this team’s potential.
3/19/2009 - Dogus Balbay Made a Three-Pointer. Never Forget.
This group of kids (i say group and not team because they are not playing like a complete team) has a long ways to go. Players (see: Jordan hamilton) are very selfish and need to try to create open looks instead of trying to be heroes. its ok to slow down the game a bit, just make sure you get the points
Jordan Hamilton
MJY6087 makes the point, but I would add that JH is the least aware of the benefit of feeding the beast under the basket. I would not put him on the floor with Pittman until he learns The Rule.
I join all in wanting a complete recovery for Varez Ward.
Did Chapman have a decent preseason? Is he recovered from the flu? I thought he showed potential last year.
as much as I'd love to get on JH's case about going 1-on-1
the guy made a couple great shots late in the game last night. he’s got a scorer’s mentality which I don’t think we should really try to inhibit too much. the team just needs to realize his role in the offense. if we’re trying to get the ball down low, we probably don’t want him to be the one to make that happen.
that said, I do think he could try to work himself more into the offense instead of being a black hole when the ball comes his way, and it would only benefit him to become a much more complete player by doing the little things on the floor.
