Why didn't we offer Christine Michael?
Just got back home to Austin from the game in College Station and the one thing on my mind for the majority of the ride home was why did Mack not offer Micheal a scholarship? This kid is the real deal and is going to be a stud at A&M. I figured he was going to be a good college back after watching his performance in the Army All American Bowl last year, but I did not expect him to put up almost 100 yards and a TD against our stout rush defense as a freshman. Which leads me back to why didn't Mack go after him? This is a kid who wanted to come to Texas and who's own father would wear Texas jumpsuits to his high school games during his senior year down in Beaumont and tell others that his son was going to be a Longhorn. So what did Mack see in him or more so in Whaley who is redshirting? Oh well, I guess I need to get over wishing he was in our backfield, especially after the great performance by Newton.

Correct me if I'm wrong...
If memory serves me right, Michael was not offered because Whaley had been promised he was going to be the only RB that Mack went after. I believe Michael still wanted to come to Texas but he was not given the option. Again this is what I recall from earlier in the year.
Couple reasons
Juarez hit on one, but the bigger reason were his academics. We weren’t sure if he could qualify/stay qualified. Stupid self-imposed restriction that I imagine we will see disappear when Muschamp takes over and the current academics guy is shown the door.
Jermie Calhoun wasn’t offered for similar reasons.
But I rather have guys that'll take care of business in the classroom
than impleasant surprises we got at the beginning of the season with Brandon Collins and Christian Scott.
It Ain't Easy, But It's Worth It.
100% Agreement
The great thing about Texas is that we can recruit blue chip athletes. We don’t have to take risks on academic/character question marks. Some people will point to incidents that have occurred with players on our teams (Ramonce, the numerous DUI’s, etc), but the truth is that those individuals probably didn’t appear risky during the recruiting process.

Seriously, that's embarrassing
Almost as bad as Chykie Brown’s mother naming him because he was a “shock.”
C Michael, R Swope, U Nwach>>?
Aggies got a few good guys that we didn’t offer. Michael was so highly rated it really is one of those head scratchers. He is excellent.
The Aggies are going to have some talent and we better be careful with them in the next few years
Juarez hit it.
The other was urban myth started as company line cover story. It hurts even more given our refusal to offer C.Gray in the previous class. Aggie got them both. Florida, who ranks a bit higher than Texas in academics, offered both.

By what measure is Florida ahead of UT in academics?

Same question
I don’t think there’s any real comparison. Am I wrong?
Either way, Urban Meyer’s shown many times that he’s not one to take a hard line against poor academics, misconduct, or outright thuggery.

Is that right?
Is that why Urban Meyer (verified by news sources) requires professors for 1st and 2nd year scholarship players to have assigned seating? Then he has members of a student organization float by classes to check attendance? It is amazing how young men who attend class seem to perform better. You know…., like better grades.

Florida is a very good public school, academically. Only one of two schools anyone should consider attending in the SEC (for academics), the other being Vanderbilt.

That being said, it doesn’t mean the athletes are held to the same standard of other students. I’m sure some of our athletes might not have gotten in to Texas if they weren’t offered an athletic scholarship.
But Brown wouldn’t take some kid that couldn’t meet minimal requirements to succeed at UT. They would just fail out and he would get more flack about our graduation rate.
All the hand-wringing about not offering Michael… Maybe the coaches know something we don’t- academically, etc. We can’t take everyone. And it is always fun to hear the whining from these players that didn’t get an offer from Texas. They love to beat UT just to show us as some sort of payback. It gets old.

Somebody on either end wasn't impressed
If it was purely a Whaley over Michael decision then it was a mistake, we all make them. I like the explanation below about missing the junior day. That will send up a red flag with Mack and I also like the idea of recruiting only people that really want to play here. Maybe he just didn’t click here, maybe interview-wise. I have to say we’re getting people of a lot better character these days and it shows.
You can’t get them all. I wish him luck in all but one game each year. Tre Newton may actually have better cutback ability from what I saw Thursday.

I am more and more impressed with Newton every time I see him play. I don’t second guess the coaches’ decision about players. They know something we don’t and they know who is a fit for the program. So true about character.

Thank you!
Someone who keeps up with the rankings, I see.
Maybe the doubters will trust U.S. News and World Report. Penn State, Florida and Texas are all tied at #47.

HC, if you believe US News rankings are accurate indicia of academic rigor, particularly for athletes, I have beachfront property in Sweetwater to sell you.

PLEASE feel free to show us another....
I’m suspecting you already looked and found Florida was as ranked as high, or higher, and chose not to supply your “preferred” source.

No, I have no preferred source. I merely have enough reasoning skills (and degrees) to know that US News isn't one.
I don’t have the desire or time to explain to you why this is the case, but if you’d like to investigate you may want to start your journey at these places.

As for the original question, I have a high regard for the University of Florida, but variations in program quality, classroom experience and degree requirements inevitably render any definitive statement laughable.
But, if you’re slobbering to find a respected ranking that has UT above UF. Here. On a ranking of worldwide universities UT is 38th and Florida is 58. Knock yourself out.

But UF is better than the majority of SEC schools, which was my point. Oh, and Vanderbilt. Vndy accepted my app years ago so I consider them a top school. Or maybe they were desperate for students for that year… :-)

Overall, I would tend to agree with both assessments
As would most who try to analyze such things. I’m not sure they give bonus points for having the good sense to admit you, Dime, but perhaps they should.
Florida does some really interesting things with their higher educational system – they’re more focused on output based metrics as an example. At the graduate and professional level they have been known throw money by the truck load to tempt “high value” specialists to Gainesville. Of course some of that trickles down to the undergraduate as well.
I’m more concerned that the use of a US news ranking as a holy writ pronouncement on the state of higher academia is a sad commentary on the value people place on institutions of learning.

I think Mack and staff pulled off of C. Micheal to fast after he didn’t show up for one of the junior days that he was supposed to attend. Actually, I think it was the first junior day. Whaley attended and got the offer, and Micheal did not attend. I guess they only wanted to take one RB that year. I hope Whaley is dang good because it looks like we passed up on a great one. Don’t understand the staff taking the hard line on some guys like Michael, and not taking the same hard line on other kids. Whaley is definitely not off to a good start showing up out of shape.
A semester with Mad Dog
and he will probably be moving to Defensive End. At 6’3 230 he really doesn’t have much upward movement as far as size goes. Mad Dog will really have to focus on speed work and explosive lifts with him.

Bingo!
I’ve seen him play a good number of games, going back to his freshman season. Originally he was a man amongst boys. The players began to catch up with him, yet he continued to run upright with poor pad level.
I truly believe we just (rightfully so) took the path of least resistance. He’ll get his try at RB, as promised, then we’ll turn him over to Oscar Giles who will make an NFL’er out of him. All the while, we didn’t have to compete so hard for one heck of an athlete.

Micheal
You should look up the pictures of how he showed up to fall camp. Ripped and looking more like a NFL player. This kid is gonna be good. He’s still a true freshman! Good thing this isn’t the NBA, he has to stick around for a while.
