Muschamp on ND short list
This didn't take long. According to CBS.com's Dennis Dodd, Notre Dame is thinking defense for their next coach and Muschamp is on their radar. Also listed are Stoops and TCU's Gary Patterson. I certainly don't profess to know the inner workings of the ND machinery, but from what I read you need to either be a homer or have great PR skills to survive the onslaught which accompanies the position.
That's what makes these interesting names to be on a short list. Muschamp admitted less than a year ago that he wasn't ready to be a head coach at a big time program, needing time to learn the intricacies of being the CEO of a top 5 juggernaut. Patterson's knock around TCU for years has been his lack of political savy when it comes to alumni, boosters, fundraising etc. Patterson aside, does Muschamp bolt for a chance to coach the Irish? As the article points out, in the time it will take to turn the thing around at ND (3-4 years), he very likely will be the head coach at The University of Texas. Why take the risk?
Stoops is the only one with the track record of leading a big boy, but I just can't wrap my mind around leaving a place like OU(sucks) to go to Notre Dame. Maybe my relative youth (under 30) prevents me from comprehending why the coach of one of the Big 5 would even consider leaving his post to go to South Bend. For ND to throw his name out around, does that mean they have at least some indication he would seriously consider an offer?

I'd be surprised
It’s not as simple as an offensive vs. defensive orientation. I don’t have any special insights either, except ND friends and alumni, but they’re really looking for the total package this time. Weiss has soured them on guys without head coaching “CEO” experience and his real downfall in South Bend, in at least equal measure to his win-loss record, has been his arrogance and abrasive personality. He’s alienated some key “University” alumni and he’s given nothing to the “football alumni” to defend him with. Ideally they want someone who understands and respects Notre Dame, its culture and its values…something they thought they had in Weiss.
My guess is that Muschamp has figured this out on his own but ND has unique challenges in recruiting, scheduling, the national spotlight and a schizophrenic alumni base that he wouldn’t want to try to master at this point in his young career.
As for Stoops it would be very interesting to see if ND would do for him what they did for Holtz and try to accomodate him on the recruiting trail. They might work with him on academic issues but they won’t put up with character issues. Just an opinion.
Fully agree, it's much more likely that Notre Dame hires a coach with head coaching experience
In fact, I wouldn’t be overly surprised if they pursue a head coach with relatively similar experience to what the Notre Dame job requires. Jagodzinski springs to mind, and I’m sure Harbaugh’s name has been tossed around. There’s a lot of pressure put on the program to graduate a high percentage of players (notably higher than any public university) and have a bare minimum of off the field issues. Remember the media coming unglued after there were pictures of Jimmy Clausen at a party with beer?
Also, contrary to what Dennis Dodds and his ilk tends to assert, the escalation clauses in Muschamp’s contract make the starting ante for his services almost prohibitive. Deloss Dodds has written a contract that will make him among the highest paid coaches in college football his first season. We’re Texas, we can afford it if the unthinkable happens and it doesn’t work out. Many schools can’t, particularly those already paying a buyout.

Texas > Notre Dame.
If he was going to bolt, he would have done it already for the AU job or would wait for a place like Georgia to come open. The fact is, Texas and both of those schools can out-recruit ND these days. All ND really has left anymore is “history” and “tradition”. Times have changed. We’ve got a full cupboard and he’s getting paid a Lot. Plus his wife loves it here. ain’t happenin’.

I would be shocked if stoops went as well. anybody from a southern school, really. have you seen the ladies/weather/recruits down here? vs south bend.
You have not seen the ladies in Oklahoma I guess

No, I'm familiar with Bob Stoops.

Stoops might
entertain the offer because ND can offer him more money. OU(sucks) fans might argue that OU is just as much of a prestige/history/tradition school as ND.
I don’t see Stoops flirting with the NFL any time soon. Spurrier told him that 10-12 years at one gig is plenty and after that everything starts to lose its luster.
The only other potential gig Stoops may consider is Iowa, his alma mater. Iowa and OU were both looking for coaches the same year and Iowa wanted Stoops but waited too long to pull the trigger. Stoops went to OU. But Iowa doesn’t need a coach and won’t any time soon unless Ferentz heads back to the NFL.
What else is left? Notre Dame. But I don’t see him going there because of the stricter academics and the overall intense pressure.
Not Worried
Muschamp will probably be Texas’ head coach in the next couple of years and Mack will move into the AD role. Muschamp is too smart to leave Texas. The recruiting is too easy, the money is too plentiful (both salary and program funding), and Austin is too amazing for him to bolt to Indiana for a high-pressure rebuilding job that handcuffs him in recruiting.

Notre Dame is a great job waiting for the right coach
It’s also an eat-you-alive job if you don’t produce in 3-4 years, and Notre Dame is an extremely difficult recruiting position.
It’s a Catholic school. Most of the top speed/skill position talent coming ouf of high schools is not Catholic. . . Academic standards are extremely high; I’d guess Notre Dame is one of the 10 toughest Division I schools to get into (ranking with Stanford, Duke, Rice, Vanderbilt, etc.). . . . Nearly everybody the Irish play ranks them No. 1 as the opponent they most want to beat; upsets come with the territory.
I can see Stoops being interested ONLY if he evaluates his near-future OU chances as about like this year’s (6-5). He’d make Notre Dame better, but is a national championship shot better at ND or OU?
Notre Dame is one of “the” jobs in the college coaching ranks. The program may be down but there is serious prestige with the head coaching job. ND can match Texas (and any of the staus programs) for money and wealthy, connected alumnae. (OU cannot.) Bob Stoops should consider the job. Muschamp doesn’t have to. He is already inheriting the same type of program. And he gets to sit back, earn serious money and learn on the job. Everyone can stop the hand-wringing every time his name comes up on someone’s list.

I’m at ND now. Of the many names I’ve heard bandied about, plausible and ridiculous, Muschamp has never been mentioned, even on a wish list. This is nonsense. My money is on Kelly from Cincy or Stoops, possibly Patterson.
My Notre Dame alumni friends believe ND can't overcome his Michigan affiliation with filthy lucre
I disagree.

Kelly
He’s a good Irish Catholic (lol—that is oxymoronic I think) with connections in the area and would definitely be a major step up for him. He has done a lot with Cincy and this would be a great fit for ND…the big question is if ND could handle Kelly’s demands to not be micromanaged, which is probably nearly impossible for the Irish powers-that-be.
ND>TCU
hate hate HATE notre dame but patterson should take this job if offered
ND could use some texas recruits

If we win the NC
there is a decent chance coach Boom will be our head coach as soon as next year. Call it bias if you want, but I don’t think there is a program in the country that is better than Texas. Our tradition matches with the best in the country (USC, ND), and our facilities are top-notch, and we ARE the best school in the country when it comes to recruiting. All he needs to be the head coach here is patience.
If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!
Actually many teams have better tradition than Texas......
In my eyes, national championships, Heisman’s, conference championship’s, and even winning streaks should all count towards prestige. Texas no doubt is up there, heck they should eventually pass Meatchicken with all time wins, but what does Texas have that makes them so prestigous? Look at the mighty horn bowl record…………25-22 and a couple of ties………Not bad, but not to impressive to me. One thing that I’m proud that my team has accomplished is the 47 game winning streak OU currently owns. No team in CFB has came close. I take that back, USC a couple of seasons ago made it to the thirties……..BOOMER!

OU definitely has an outstanding record with all the championships and talented players and coaches that have come through the program. The problem is your reputation and it always will be. Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas, etc. do not have the taint of a program that has to cheat to win. That is the difference.

An OU fan running bowl record smack?
That’s rich. And you don’t currently own a 47-game winning streak. That was half a century ago and came during one of many periods of rampant cheating in the OU program. You currently own a 1-game winning streak. But it does not surprise me that you’d use a 50-year-old streak tainted by cheating to deflect attention from the current state of your program. That’s what losers do. Aggies are good at that, too.
Can you even consider it a streak
if it is only one game? That’s like saying you’re quitting drinking as you take the last chug of your beer.

And how is OU's 24-17-1 bowl record more impressive to you?

Patterson would be goofy not to take this job.
TCU is great and all, but this would be a step up in my opinion. Muschamp won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. I think he stays around and waits for the head job at Texas.

Is it just me, but why would ND want Stoops......
Granted, 10 years ago when Stoops had good coordinators, he was a gunslinger, beat top 25 teams regularly, and actually won some bowl games.
Has anybody looked at these metrics the last 5 years? He has a pathetic record against top 25 programs since 2005 (something like a 35% winning rate). Yes he left his starters in 4 quarters last year, against teams he had beaten by 4 tds, and thus ran up big scores and stats so as to kink the BCS system, and get himself into the big game, at our expense. His bowl record is a friggin’ disaster…..absolutely embarrrasing.
So besides a few sleazy program issues sprinlkled in, I just cant see why any prestigious program would want him.
Besides we need to keep Stoops right where he is……..I like being 4-1 against OU.
Can't get enough of that cowbell !!!

There's another angle I've come to enjoy
The meltdown of the OU fanbase if they’re spurned for rebuilding the Fighting Irish. The ensuing coaching search, a potential for john blake redux and utter turmoil. It could be fine entertainment.

Love it. Stoops to ND. We should start a pr drive.

Because a decade and a half of DavieWillingWeis has driven ND to desperation
Right now ND would love to be 1-3 in national title games in the last 11 years.
