Non-Texas Saturday Gameday Open Thread

Ole Miss vs Miss St. in the Egg Bowl.  OU vs. OSU in Bedlam.  UNC vs NC State and alot of other plenty game on this Rivalry Saturday.  Enjoy.

I'm watching the Ole Miss and Miss St game on SEC Network (lovely), and Bedlam on FSN (even worse).

Lets hear your predictions and we'll see if Tebow tries to out-do Colt's Heisman bid later on against the Noles.

Also, later on tonight we get to see Baylor play Tech in the stadium that I'll be gracing with my presence next Saturday.

Hook em!

FG for Sooners

Up 3-0 on OSU. Sooner Defense looking very good. Robinson not looking himself.

Also Ole Miss up 13-10 on Miss State at the half. Shay Hodge just made an unreal catch for a TD to put Ole Miss ahead at the break.

Heisman watch

With Colt’s great game on Thursday, and Ingrams AWFUL game last night…lets see who else can increase their push to be in NYC in mid December:

-So far, the only one playing right now is CJ Spiller from Clemson. CJ returned the opening kickoff for a TD which gives him 7 for his career which is a CFB Record. Topping the record books or not, his Heisman chances are taking quite a dip as he’s only getting 18 yards on 7 carries in the first half. Cocks over the Tigers at the half: 17-7

by Ohio Horn on Nov 28, 2009 12:52 PM CST reply actions

You're right

It is an ugly game. I’ve never seen so many reviews from the booth in the first half. In fact, OU just “scored” a TD and now its being reviewed. OU bout to go up 10-0.

Do we care who wins?

Our collective distaste for the sooners aside, does it hurt us in any significant way if they take down the highest-ranked team we’ve beaten this season?

I'd like OSU to win

I hate OU. It is funny to watch them lose.

On the other hand, if OU wins, Boise should get a BCS berth. If TCU and Boise both make it to BCS games, is there a chance they would play each other? That would be funny. Kind of like, “OK, you 2 little kids, you can sit at the grown-ups table today. But you can’t play with the grown-ups, you can only play amongst yourselves.”

by longhorn_dan on Nov 28, 2009 1:13 PM CST reply actions

In my opinion

I want TCU to play the SEC CG loser, and get what they want. A shot at the big boys on the national stage. TCU has a great defense and offense, but what they lack, and what the talking heads at ESPN forget to analyze, is their depth. They can’t hang with someone like FloriBama because they lack depth. If TCU beats up on Boise, then nothing is done. There will still be complaining about how they deserve to be in the top eschelon of teams. If they beat a FloriBama, then they deserve all the credit in the world like Utah last year, but if they don’t, then we can shut their lovely fan base up.

OSU needs a spark, and maybe they need to try and see if that 3rd string QB who is about 30 years old can provide it. I sitll like Zach to play a bit, but OSU is getting nothing done on the Offensive side of the ball.

really hoping Tebow struggles

if he does then I think Colt did enough to be the front runner, after ingram REALLY sucked it up yesterday…slightly concerned with tebows chance to put up big numbers the next two games though

gerhart is still in it, but I think Colt’s career award vs. a Stanford running back’s chances are pretty damn good

by trueorangeblood on Nov 28, 2009 1:35 PM CST reply actions

Fiesta Bowl: Boise St vs. Iowa
Sugar Bowl: SEC loser vs. TCU
Orange Bowl: Cinci/Pitt Winner vs. Ga Tech/Clemson winner
Rose Bowl: Ohio St. vs. Oregon/Oregon St winner
MNC: Texas vs. SEC winner

I think in this day and age it is admirable that he is so strong in his faith

If you want to criticize the media love affair with him, that’s fine. But try to imagine how painful the Colt-Ship “roommate,” “fishing,” “hunting,” “dad roommates,” and now “little brothers are bff’s too” storylines are for non-Horn fans.

If you want to criticize his passing mechanics that is fine. The guy is bound to be the next Eric Crouch in the league.

I just don’t think it’s wrong for a guy to use fame to spread the Word. He could easily be Leinart like and have pics online of him in hot tubs with 5 girls, or drunk like Clausen or VY, but instead he chooses to live a different kind of celebrity life. Colt frequently mentions God in interviews, and did so twice after the A&M game. I’ve seen Colt at church on several occasions. I find it refreshing to see two guys who are living a Christian life and not just talking like they do (which is so common among athletes today). I don’t agree with criticizing someone for doing what they think is right.

This isn’t about their faith: McCoy just handles his life and his faith with poise, dignity and maturity. I don’t always feel the same about Tebow.

If anyone visits BON they will definitely see that we are sick of the roommates, dads have been friends forever, fishing and hunting buddies, etc. themes and non-stop drivel from sports writers/commentators. We even make fun of it.

I get it if you don't like him..

But when you said:

But I can do without wearing your religion on your sleeve. Who you are and what you believe comes through by your demeanor and behavior, not by announcing it every five minutes. And announcing that you have to pick your bible verse for the next game.

I took that to be about his faith. I think Tebow has expressed his religious beliefs with incredible poise, dignity, and maturity. The media has made him this celebrity. He didn’t ask Verne Lundquist or Gary Danielson to hype him up every game. I think its cool that when they put a microphone to his mouth he actually thanks God and doesn’t just say it because he thinks it sounds cool and he’s seen other celebrities and athletes do it on tv.

No, it isn’t about having faith, it is about hearing about it every five minutes. I consider myself a person of faith but I’m not gong to beat you over the head with it. It is annoying.

Hope Irish do it for Charlie

I would like for Charlie to keep job just based on fiscal responsibility. Something bothers me of buying his contract for 18 large and then throwing 6 more on the next victim. At least not a public university

by realmccoy on Nov 28, 2009 6:55 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Alum donations will be withheld or reduced

if they don’t at least think the program is moving in the right direction. It’s also fiscally irresponsible to alienate a huge source of your income. Not to mention if people aren’t interested in the program, people stop going to games, buying merchandise, etc., and Notre Dame gives 20% of its athletics profits to the university at large (at most schools, including Texas, it’s around 1%), so a loss of athletics revenue would negatively affect the whole school. My tuition dollars actually go to ND, and I think it’s more financially responsible in the long run to make a coaching change.

Also, the word is that ESPN is wrong on Charlie’s buyout being 18 million. Apparently it’s big, but not that big.

by LonghornEm on Nov 28, 2009 7:38 PM CST up reply actions

There are deep pockets in ND alumnae. A buyout is not out of the question.

20% of athletic revenue goes back to the university? That is impressive.

Did anyone catch Harbaugh after the game?

In the post-game interview with ABC, he made a point of getting Gerhardt included and then argued for him to win the Heisman.

How appalling. A coach politicing for one of his players on national television. I wonder how Stanford’s rivals across the bay feel about a coach doing that.

by Hopkins Horn on Nov 28, 2009 10:53 PM CST reply actions

No, why?

I’ve always thought Harbaugh was a poor sport and generally classless, so I tend to judge him pretty harshly. If some other coach had done that, I might not have cared much. Plus, I’m obviously rooting hard for Colt to win it and the other candidates to screw up, so there’s that.

by LonghornEm on Nov 29, 2009 11:53 AM CST up reply actions

If Mack Brown had done the same thing, I don't think any of us would have objected

Actually, Mack Brown has done much the same thing, just not after a prime time game against ND.

I have no problem with Harbaugh, I was unaware he inspired enmity in anyone save Michigan and USC fans. Of course, some of that may be nostalgia from when he was the second coming of “captain comeback” with the colts. He lobbies hard for his team, is perhaps too outspoken at times and can border on absurd, but I’m not sure I see career at Stanford as more or less classless than the majority of Division I coaches. This is the same profession that employs Mike Leech and Bobby Petrino after all. But that’s just my opinion.

As long as Colt gets to hold the crystal football, I could care less about the Heisman.

ND fans

Even before last night’s loss. Last year when he lost to ND in South Bend, Clausen tried to shake his hand after the game and he told him to “fuck off,” and then he whined at his press conference about how the refs gave ND the game. Just as an example. Or going for 2 against USC when he was already up by several touchdowns. The majority of my fellow ND fans do not have a high opinion of him at all.
