why are they so bummed?
he’s been kind of a bust…

I was impressed with him when he's seen the field
by 40AS on Nov 3, 2009 5:27 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I must disagree
He looks stocky and slow. That, and he’s been susceptible to nagging injuries. It’s clear that Stewart is the best RB on the CU roster. If you’re wondering who Stewart is, then I think we all know just how regrettable his career has been so far.

Best this year, Stewart
But Scott still showed a much greater potential.
by Wells on Nov 3, 2009 9:04 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Really?
I haven’t seen anything from him in CU games that has displayed his potential. He seems, well, not stocky as someone said, but really just stout. And he’s been slow and tentative as well. Hawkins was saying that he was injured, but it was an obvious cover, because he would NOT have an injured Scott in as a return man.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 3, 2009 9:44 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't disagree with the first part, necessarily.
But RB and kick returner require different physical moves. A lingering injury that kept him from cutting on a dime in traffic wouldn’t necessarily prevent him from being an effective returner, which generally requires one cut per run and favors more straight-ahead running. Depends on the injury.

This explains why I never made it as a running back
Well, either that or my HS playing weight of 135lbs.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 3, 2009 10:47 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't know how you see potential in what he has produced in his first two seasons
I have seen CU on tv several times and every time he gets the ball he looks slow and afraid to hit the hole (or lack of one) at full speed. He looks like a guy who either isn’t trying because he knows his team is terrible or is playing to not get injured.
Stewart looks like Barry Sanders next to him.
by the1austin on Nov 4, 2009 10:42 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Because Stewart is already at the peak of his pontential
and Scott is underachieving. His size and speed is too good to not have a great potential. This year he has been playing injured for most of the time.
by Wells on Nov 4, 2009 11:02 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think anyone's denying that Scott has plenty of potential
I think the main contention, or at least my own, is that he hasn’t actually flashed much (if any) of it in a college football game so far.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 5, 2009 12:50 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The Toledo game
He ran 12 times for 85 yards in the first half, and then never saw the field in the second half except for kickoff returns (he had 208 return yards on 8 returns as well, because Toledo scored on every other play from scrimmage). And for his efforts he got about 1 or 2 rushes a game after that.
by Wells on Nov 5, 2009 10:28 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It is more the disappointment of Hawkins in general
and while he has not played great, he still has a lot of potential.

dont we have a home and home with UCLA?

2010 and 2011.
But he’ll have to sit out next year, I believe, so only in 2011, which is at UCLA.

It doesn’t get much better than playing for the BCS title, Darrell. Good luck under Rick Nueheisel (sp?). Yea, that program will be back on the way up soon.

But thinking about that quote… Maybe Scott did not want the competition at UT. At Colorado he probably assumed he would be the go-to guy. At Texas, he would have to fight hard for playing time, let alone be the star.

The big question is:
Does the Mack Brown Curse travel with him to UCLA? Or does it stay with CU?

CU
They needs to bring back the “recruit parties”. Or learn how to cheat like OU. Lower academic standard like OU. Boulder is a nice city. They’ll be alright.

But in his case I think he left for a musical career.
by realmccoy on Nov 3, 2009 7:25 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Scott seems to have some kind of codependency problem involving his uncle.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 3, 2009 8:04 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I suspect it is a more a nagging
mother related issue since we are talking about him following his mother’s brother. I think she still lives in CA so probably getting closer to home Tthe intense scrutiny on her allegedly moving to Boulder for a job may have made their plans fall apart.
by Wrangler86 on Nov 4, 2009 1:58 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
You can't really blame him
for leaving. That program has no sense of direction other than a downward spiral. Its clear at this point Dan Hawkins cannot handle being at a school the size of Colorado. As far as Scott goes, the curse of Mack lives on. The kid has all the potential in the world with the size and speed and he couldn’t make it work at a watered down Colorado, granted it was with limited opportunities. Now he will just go play second fiddle at UCLA to USC. I doubt we will hear much more about him from here on out. (I reserve the right to eat my words)

This is why
You don’t always listen to your mother. I don’t think any funny business happened (like her getting a job), but it was obvious he wanted to come to Texas at one point during the process and family pressure pushed him to Colorado. For all the criticisms of our running scheme here, I bet we would have made more use of his talent than CU did.

By the way
I actually feel sorry for Buffs fans here. They either have to keep a coach who has basically lost the program, or they’re going to have to eat a massive buyout to get rid of him. It’s a horrible situation.

hard to understand how he didn't improve more...
since he didn’t come to Texas to be coached by an ex-quarterback and all……..

Whoa...
Why the pot-shot at Major?
by OminousPolaris on Nov 3, 2009 9:44 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It was Darrell Scott's pot shot, not Pflash's.
Part of his stated reason for going to Colorado was the fact that in the middle of his recruitment, Texas hired Major to be the RB coach, which he apparently didn’t like because he was an ex-QB.
by billyzane on Nov 3, 2009 9:46 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
that's right...
plus it added to the stupidity of the comment that Colorado’s RB coach was also an ex-QB…
to be honest, that’s the only thing I really held against Scott in that whole fiasco. Might be completely wrong, but I always got the impression he was never really driving his own bus, and I kind of felt sorry for him. After that quote though, he was prime material for the Mack Brown Curse, and the coming-out party for Thayer “All the News that’s Fit to Make up” Evans only made that worse.
by Pflash on Nov 4, 2009 1:12 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Participating in that b.s. story with Thayer Evans
showed that he was a bit out of touch and that people who did not have his best interest in mind were influencing him. Scott’s verbal commit to the Texas coaches and then public announcement to CU in the NYTimes article was pretty crappy. Kharma. Wonder which recruit Thayer Evans is preying upon this year.

oh man
a lot of shamed co-workers up here in Colorado today. Really gloomy. and it looks like Hawkins will be around for a few more seasons as well.
here’s how i soften the blow: “it’s a shame that y’all can’t just get something going…the northern half of the conference is just there for the taking”.
by brownf on Nov 4, 2009 12:00 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
This...
Even Barnett was able to win the North in 2005. Now granted their 70-3 embarrassment led to his ouster, but as you say if they could even get ‘something’ going they would have a shot. Sh*t, look what Snyder has done at KSU and they have even less talent than CU. If Hawkins can catch lightening in a bottle next year, it wouldn’t be all that shocking to see them compete for the North division. I just don’t see any of those teams rising to an unbeatable level. Nebraska and Missouri should improve, but Kansas will likely decline further and KSU and Iowa State each could continue to improve with better coaching but they just don’t have the talent to make them any more obvious contenders than CU could be if they could just get some offense going.
by Rickyspub on Nov 4, 2009 8:04 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't see much reason to expect a further decline for Kansas
I think KU is likely to remain a division contender for quite a while, and KSU is going to be able to ascend as Snyder gets a little bit more of his system and his recruits into the lineups. Daniel Thomas was a terrific get, and although he’ll only be in Manhattan two seasons, I think he’ll remind a lot of recruits that Snyder can do good things with good talent.
Don’t get me wrong; K-State won’t be a consistent power or anything. It’s a tough place to sell sometimes, not so much because of the program itself as due to the town, location, and, to a certain extent, the school itself. That forces Snyder to go the juco route more than he would probably like, and that makes it harder to have the stability and experience combination that the top teams have. He’ll get good juco players and fill in with some nice HS gems here and there, but even a great coach like Snyder doesn’t have enough hours in the day to turn that into a recipe for a championship.
I guess what I’m saying is that KSU will get better, but they’ll probably waiver between 7-5 and 8-4 in the next few seasons, as long as Snyder’s there. They’ll contend for weak-sister division titles, along with Mangino’s boys and Nebraska.
One thing I’ll note, though: the division had a rough start to the season, but I don’t think it’s as terrible as most are saying. This isn’t meant to sound like the “SEC beating up on SEC” argument, but I do think it’s important to note that most of the teams in the North have improved their quality of football during the conference schedule. That kind of coincidence has a way of cultivating a bad image for the division, even if it’s not really that bad.
