For the first time since his visit to Austin for the Kansas game, White spoke publicly on Tuesday about the trip to campus. White mentioned that he was hosted by Christian Scott, whom he called his "homeboy," while also saying that he spent time with Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley.

Speculation has surrounded the impact of his new stepfather, thought to be nudging his stepson towards Oklahoma. However, White said that both his stepfather and his mother "loved" the environment and felt comfortable. As for White, he "liked everything about the game" and the campus, sounding more positive about Texas than he has in, well, roughly a year.

Part of it may have been that he was able to "smooth everything out" with Mack Brown, a relatively nebulous statement that could be about the infamous incident with Favors at the spring game or could mean that they simply talked about why both sides had fallen out of contact.

The other big news is that White was not able to make his scheduled trip to Norman last weekend and has not yet re-scheduled it. If he does not return, it would give the Longhorns the last say in his recruitment, potentially a major advantage for Texas, though it's hard to say how much of an impact the most recent visit makes in the mind of a recruit -- it probably changes on a case-by-case basis. The bottom line, however, is that the Longhorns are right back in the thick of it even if White isn't yet set to make a decision, with the earliest date he mentioned being the Under Armour All-American game on January 2nd.

With Big Game Bob Possibly headed to ND...

…I’m guessing a lot of his recruits may be having second thoughts of actually showing up in that piehole they call a State.

In-VINCE-able.

I'm curious about the recruiting ramifications of it as well

If he were to leave, would some recruits jump ship? I’d love to see a number of guys, including Kansas boys Justin McCay and Blake Bell, choose to go elsewhere. Obviously it’d be nice to see this result in their losing ground with Mr. Jeffcoat, Mr. White, and Mr. Seastrunk.

by burntorangehorn on Dec 1, 2009 6:35 AM CST up reply actions

Speaking of Seastrunk

Here’s what he had to say about LSU’s loss of Larry Porter:

"I think it was a great move for him," Seastrunk said in a story on TigerSportsDigest.com. "He was one of the reasons I liked LSU, because I would have liked to play for him, but I know he has to do what benefits his family. I can’t say where I stand with LSU, but I am proud and happy for coach Porter."

I can’t remember, but I don’t think Seastrunk has taken an official visit to Texas yet, but I’m not really sure how indicative that is. He lives pretty close by, after all, so he probably knows what’s there.

or thinks he does, you probably dont get as extensive a tour, or as formal a meeting with the coaches without the official. it’s not like you can just show up one day and say “look at me, give me attention”… or maybe that’s what he expects

The Temple running back

has not taken an official visit to Texas.

He isn't leaving

But probably 25% of the class would go elsewhere.

Are you sure he's not leaving?

I mean, every time I see another Stoops denial, I see another report that it’s all but a done deal.

by burntorangehorn on Dec 1, 2009 9:41 AM CST up reply actions

I wonder too...

His denials are weak. He hasn’t said flat out, ‘I am not talking to ND’. That is the point that he continues to pussyfoot around. And until he has a firm contract in hand, how can he say he is anything but OU’s head football coach?

To admit he is talking to ND without being certain he is leaving would put him in a horrible position should a deal fall through. Recruits both committed and uncommitted will not look on the admission favorably. The current team/administration and the fans certainly won’t be happy. There is no reason for him to do anything but deny it. The fact that he won’t just go ahead and lie or be truthful about not being in contact with ND at all is odd and perhaps telling.

I am not sure if they can work something out, but I get the feeling they are in contact and Stoops is doing more than listening to them. I think he is negotiating. The question is whether its a ploy to extract more out of OU? Maybe, but maybe not…

by Rickyspub on Dec 1, 2009 10:13 AM CST up reply actions

plenty of reports out there that he’s agreed on terms of the salary, however he wants the admissions reqs reduced and the disciplinary control over his players given to him. take it with a grain of salt.

by Displaced Longhorn on Dec 1, 2009 10:17 AM CST up reply actions

All the reports of it being a "done deal" are coming from

unpublished and frankly ridiculous sources. The fact that he is been in Cali the last two days meeting with recruits sealed it for me

Interesting...

I saw Chris Mortensen of ESPN reporting on some Charlie Weis firing news just earlier today. Funny that he, of all people, would be discussing Charlie Weis, a college coach…

Does anyone else see what’s happening here!?!?!?

Notre Dame? N-O-T-R-E D-A-M-E. It’s an anagram people, they’re trying to tell us!

The letters spelling “Notre Dame” rearrange to read “Need a Mort” as in Chris Mortensen. “Mort” is his nickname on ESPN. See what’s happening here? Notre Dame. Need a Mort. They’ve already made up their mind, and it’s happening right under our noses.

Chris Mortensen has all the inside information because he’s the next head coach at Notre Dame!

We all know Lord Voldemort will be the next coach of Notre Dame

And by Lord Voldemort I mean Bobby Petrino

sorry,

ND is an anagram for ME NOT READ, implying stoops will get his wish of lower academic standards for his recruits, as this is a phrase he hears more than he’d like to admit.

by PhiTypist on Dec 1, 2009 3:12 PM CST up reply actions

Actually it's an anagram for "MORTE D'ANE"

Which means “death to asses,” or “death to dimwits.”

Pretty much sums up why they don’t recruit Florida well.

Hosted by C Scott?

Is it just me or does it seem strange that he was hosted by Christian Scott? Don’t get me wrong, I think C Scott is going to be a monster player before his time is finished at Texas, but isn’t he on academic probation or something? Is that who we want hosting a big-time recruit like White? Thinking back, are they both from the same HS?

by the usual suspects on Dec 1, 2009 11:00 AM CST reply actions

Scott just had academic progress problems

That usually has to do with having taken the wrong classes, or not enough classes. I guess it’s possible he failed a class at some point, but I don’t believe he’s actually on academic probation at all.

I think the reason they had him host White was because he has a lot more time to devote to something like that than a player who has to prep for gameday does.

by burntorangehorn on Dec 1, 2009 11:13 AM CST up reply actions

personally i’d arrange my hosts by who I think the recruit will have the strongest relationship with… whether thats a young kid who needs a big brother type figure, an attention whore that needs a kindred spirit, whatever gets him feeling like he’s home when he gets to campus.

by Displaced Longhorn on Dec 1, 2009 11:46 AM CST up reply actions

Both from the Metroplex

I imagine that’s why, plus the Longhorns have trouble getting players to come to Texas from Skyline, so maybe that has something to do with it as well — he could talk to White about how he ended up at Texas even though he probably had people around him who wanted him to go somewhere else, perhaps most notably his coaches, who are rumored to dislike the Longhorns for some reason. Whatever the thinking of the staff, it seems to have worked.

Can't See White in Burnt Orange

Just needing to “clear the air” means there was some hard feelings over the Favors incident. There will be other universities that got off to a good start.

I am not knocking the UT staff on this one, just saying there are schools far ahead of us at this point and that is not good.

by realmccoy on Dec 1, 2009 1:04 PM CST reply actions

I think it is down to us and OU...so those other schools that are far ahead of us obviously aren't...

From what I have read it has always been a two horse race. We started out ahead and the OU chugged past us. Now it looks like the pendulum may have started to swing back. Winning certainly doesn’t hurt.

anyone remember details from his spring visit?

If I’m not mistaken, Darius White visited Texas in the spring. He noted that MB asked about a younger brother by name. This surprised Darius because he didn’t even realize that MB knew he had younger siblings, let alone their names.

This is the kind of full court press that takes place when a family visits Texas. They meet everyone, coaches with their families, the Browns. Darius and his family got to see first hand what Texas is all about, and I can’t imagine he’d be lukewarm at this point. I also don’t believe that Bob Stoops and his staff can replicate the kind of genuine, warm environment moms, dads, and younger siblings experience when they visit Texas. A full family visit is great news for the good guys.

Favors incident

I don’t really follow recruiting, but I am taking an interest in this class. Can someone tell me what the Favors incident was and why it may affect White’s commitment? Thanks.

by BMC237 on Dec 1, 2009 3:36 PM CST reply actions

So here’s what went down at the spring game with Darius White — after showing up with his high school teammates Rashod Favors and Dominique Sanders, Favors received a handwritten nametag that identified him as White’s guest rather than a “prospect,” as the namategs identified nearly every other potential recruit. Epic fail on the part of the coaching staff — failing to print out a nametag for Favors and listing him as a guest of White makes little sense. An invitation to the spring game isn’t exactly the same as receiving a Longhorn offer, so why wouldn’t Texas take more time to at least respect White’s friend and teammates and friends as the solid football players that they are? Not having name tags for them and generally acting like they’re second-rate guests is inexplicable and inexcusable. White is and has been one of the most important targets in the whole class — treat him like it.

For a program known for supposedly getting the little details right, Texas clearly didn’t in an extremely important recruitment. It’s fine not to give White a great deal more attention than the other targeted players, but it wasn’t exactly a secret that his teammates matter to him and wasn’t exactly surprising that they came down with him. The coaches should spoken with him before the spring game and explicitly asked about his friends. Acknowledging them is a long way from actually offering them just to make a good impression on White. Acknowledgement should be the absolute minimum. No wonder White doesn’t feel comfortable with the Texas program right now — the coaches preach about “family” all the time and creating that homey atmosphere, something that didn’t happen with White because of the disrespect of White’s Dunbar family.

And that isn’t to say that such treatment is a larger problem plaguing the program — just an unfortunate, isolated incident that may cost Texas one of the top players in the country.

I appreciate it. That would be very unfortunate if that caused us to lose White.
