K-State or Neb - who do you want?

At this point it looks like Nebraska or K-State will win the North. Who do you want Texas to play and why?

Star-divide

Initially I had some concern if Texas were to play Nebraska (because of their defense). I think the Husker D-line is scary and could cause a lot of problems for the Texas O-line and offense (esp. since our run game is average at best).

But then I started reviewing the OU stats against Nebraska:

- OU had 23 first downs (Neb had 7)

- Total yards 325 OU (245 passing), 180 Neb (39 passing)

- OU 80 yds rushing (2.9 per attempt), Neb 141 (3.3 per att)

- OU 9 penalties for 64 yards, 5 turnovers (all INT's), Neb 11 penalties for 104 yds, 1 TO

Obviously the killer for OU was the 5 TO's - the biggest TO being the int thrown deep in OU territory and Neb only had to go 3-5 yards or whatever it was. OU had no problem throwing the ball (unless you count the INT's).

Texas' defense could handle the Nebraska offense much like OU did (or maybe even better than OU). I don't think the Neb defense could handle Colt and the passing game.

Now the ineptitude of GD is what scares me - especially if the game is tight and Texas isn't able to capitalize. K-State causes some concern just because they (and Bill Snyder) seem to thrive in this type of atmosphere. I like the chance for Colt and the team to get some redemption for the past two meetings.

So who do you want to play and why?

Big Time Vote For KSU

Since I think Murphy is an optimist – I always think “What could go wrong?”

In this matchup, the issue I have is that Suh guy. What if he starts destroying the interior of our OL? He may be able to almost single handedly stop our less than stellar running game. Then they get us one dimensional. Maybe Colt throws a pick or 2 under duress. I rather just not risk it.

even if Colt were to have a couple of turnovers....

I just don’t see anything from that offense that would lead me to believe they could actually do anything against our defense.

I'd much rather see Nebraska...

that offense will be shutdown by Texas and I see some turnovers leading to easy points for Texas if that matchup were to occur. Yes the Nebraska defense is good, but there other 2 phases of the game are lacking quite a bit at this point.

Meanwhile, K State scares me quite a bit. They have a history of owning Texas and have a history of pulling the upset in the Big 12 Title game. They also have very excellent and dangerous special teams which could allow them to stay in the game with Texas. I also see that K State has all 3 phases of its team playing well right now…….Bill Snyder has that team clicking and I would rather not face them.

Nebraska - Let's get a game plan for a good defense

I would rather see us beat a good defense like Nebraska. I have some concerns about the ability to run but our passig game is head above anyone else in the country. We need a tough test to get ready for the MNC. Hope it is Bama, would like us to show up the Bama defense.

head about anyone else? really? there are 15 teams passing for more yards on the season than Texas…

The fact that we're worrying about this

Makes me wonder why we’re supposedly the most complete team in the nation.

Anyway, I vote for not KSU. I hate them infinitely, but I want no business with them with this much on the line. We own Nebraska traditionally, so let’s take our chances there.

by Horn Brain on Nov 9, 2009 10:32 AM CST reply actions

What the fans think about potential opponents has nothing to do with the team being complete or incomplete

But I agree with the rest of it … we haven’t performed well against KSU recently, but we’ve owned Nebraska for a decade. I say Huskers.

by bassale47 on Nov 9, 2009 10:58 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

I want no part of KSU. That match-up has freakish, shocking upset written all over it. No way Nebraska hangs with Texas.

To Be The Best

We need to beat the best.

What I don’t like is the recruiting surge Nebraska is building up in Texas. Reminds me of the Tom Osborne era. So for that reason I would rather see K-State in Dallas.

by orangetower on Nov 9, 2009 10:50 AM CST reply actions

But there is now a direct flight from Manhattan KS to Dallas...

Fear the reaper! I am sure Snyder’s half-dessicated body will be an instant attraction for inner city kids from Dallas! I am sure it was a real hassle for him to slough that corpse to another gate in St. Louis, so this direct flight could mean trouble for us.

by Rickyspub on Nov 9, 2009 12:27 PM CST up reply actions

I'm fine with either

KSU is the one win that’s eluded Colt in his time at Texas. I’d love to see him return the favor against them.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Nebraska since their defense is one of the best in the country and it would be a great tune-up for the horns.

by burrito on Nov 9, 2009 10:57 AM CST reply actions

you know?

that’s a good point. The defense of either Florida or ‘Bama will be pretty tough and the NU D could be a better tune up. I honestly think Nebraska D is over rated though. They really haven’t seen a great offense other than Tech and I think they were exposed.

by orangetower on Nov 9, 2009 11:00 AM CST up reply actions

As long as it is a "tune-up" I agree (still remember CU fiasco)

Of course the Buffs went against the Old Horns. The ones that made promises to high profile recruits and then played them even when there was better alternatives. That specter completely out of program now.

by realmccoy on Nov 9, 2009 11:16 AM CST up reply actions

I agree

I would love to see Colt notch one against K-State, and I bet in his heart of hearts he would like to do that too. It;s the only Big 12 opponent he never whupped and he got killed in both of the previous games with them. We are not the same team as back then either. i think we take them to the woodshed with our D and our O does just fine and we get the W.

Nebraska’s D is very good and would be a good tune up to a NC game. I think we would obliterate their offense… so again we get the W. It’s almost as broad as it is long, but exorcising that K-State demon would be quite satisfying for me at least and I bet for Colt too.

Play like you mean it...

Texas v. Nebraska Title game

I like the sound of it, and I’ve never seen UT play Nebraska.

Also, I’ll repeat what UT59 said, let’s get a good defense on the field again and have our offense go at them.

by notsofst on Nov 9, 2009 11:25 AM CST reply actions

Neb...

Wife,s family are all alums and I would end up with some nice free tickets most likely out of the deal. That and it would be well worth it to watch Neb get smoked and listen to them bitch about it after all the shit they have given me for UT.

man…. that wound for me runs deep….

Big Red

Last time I saw UT play Nebraska was in the Big XII Championship game in ’99 at the Alamodome. Eric Crouch and that option offense thunderf*ed the Horns that afternoon. I would like a little payback.

We have beat them 4 times in a row since then

…and twice on their own field. Plus, I believe we’re 7-1 overall against them since the inception of the Big XII. Perhaps it is they who seek revenge against us.

Mildcats

I would like Texas to splatter the mildcats all over the field because my old friend loves them and he is a douche, stole a costume and some texas stuff i left at his house also I went to 07kstate rain game debacle. It would be cool to see the longhorns play the huskers though.

by cpabis on Nov 9, 2009 1:21 PM CST reply actions

yes!

that game was so ridiculous… when it started pouring at halftime, the fans were going nuts. It is the most pumped I have ever seen the UT fans at a home game. I was sure we were going to win that game… then the team came out flat, got nothing from the fans’ energy, and we lost. That is definitely my worst walk home from DKR of all time. We need to exorcise those demons and get Colt a big win over Kstate.

KSU

I think we will destroy either team, but Colt hasn’t beat KSU yet, and I think that beating every Big XII team would be a great feather in his cap (IIRC Bradford hasn’t beaten Colorado).

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

I'd much rather face Green and Helu than Gregory and Thomas

Daniel Thomas should be front-runner for conference newcomer of the year. He’s a multi-threat (pass/run/catch) RB with great size, strength, speed, and vision. If anyone could carry the team on his back, it’s Thomas. That’s not to say that Texas should have any problem with either of these teams, but I think the lesser threat is Nebraska.

Nebraska

Without a doubt Nebraska. As many other posters have said, they would provide a better test/tune-up for the CG. Plus, if we end up playing Alabama and The People’s Republic of Terrance Cody (Orson’s nickname for him I believe), then preparing for and evaluating our effort against Suh and Crick will be very valuable. The interior of our o-line needs to have that kind of experience fresh in their minds.

There is absolutely nothing to be gained from playing KSU. Nebraska, however, would give our offense a great test, which is something they could use again before matching up against a quality SEC defense.

Additionally

It would bring the game to a bigger stage with the strong traditions at each university.

'Huskers

The Kansas State Whiners must be the aggy of the State of Kansas. They remind me too much of atm. I don’t recall the year, but they had a decent year up until they crapped on themselves against the underdog real aggy in the Big XII title game. So that year atm advanced to a BCS bowl (probably Fiesta?) and no one would pick up the K. St. Whiners, who still had a really decent record.

The Cotton Bowl passed; the Holiday Bowl passed; there was some clause in the Alamo Bowl’s commitment to the Big XII that wouldn’t let the Alamo pass (or else K. St. could have gone to the Sun Bowl, the Weedeater Bowl or the Bluebonnet Bowl). Bill Snyder and his Whiners spent the week playing tourist around San Antonio (a very nice vacation spot) while constantly grousing in the media how it wasn’t as nice as San Diego would have been. So K. State is supposedly playing a bowl game that is beneath them, right? Then in the Alamo Bowl they promptly lose to whatever 6th seed Big Ten team that was the Whiners opponent.

If Nebraska football is the epitome of class, then Kansas State is the opposite. K. St. is the UH or a&m of the Big XII north division. I want nothing to do with the Whiners.

K-State would've been in the national championship that year

UCLA, with Cade McNown, had just lost to Miami in a rescheduled game at the Orange Bowl, so #3 KSU would’ve easily moved up to go to the title game. But after a couple of crappy calls in the 4th quarter, and a few aggy bounces, it went to overtime…then second overtime, and I believe was finally decided on a Sirr Parker diving TD in third overtime.

The reason the Cotton and Holiday passed was because they had already put in place the invitations for the other teams to go to those bowls, expecting that there was no way aggy would be the #3 team in the nation. As it turned out, aggy won, so KSU had to go play Purdue.

Know what happened then? Drew Brees happened, that’s what.

by burntorangehorn on Nov 10, 2009 8:43 AM CST up reply actions

Nebraska

I think the Big XII championship game would be much more interesting and fun if the Horns play Big Red. They have a fan base that’s big, travels well and behaves with class, win or lose.
And a championship win over Nebraska just sounds…..better.

kstate for the revenge factor
nebraska for the offenses tune-up factor

by Displaced Longhorn on Nov 9, 2009 4:28 PM CST reply actions

I Voted Nebraska

As much as I’d love to see the payback shot at K State (those guys seems to own us in everything, even when we’re good and they’re bad in baseball, basketball and football) Nebraska is on track for a better ranking and better quality win for UT.

I know, I know, just win out and things will take care of themselves, but as long as we get to have our druthers in polls like this I’ll take a quality win over a payback win any day. And if Nebraska ends up winning the rest of their games before the Big 12 Championship they’ll be a much better tune-up for the game in Pasadena than the Wildcats.
