Notes from Mack Brown's Monday Press Conference
I listented to the press conference this morning and there were some good tidbits:
On the injury front, Aaron Williams will be returning this week. And Muckelroy briefly left the game with a stinger, but is fine and will play this week. Other than that.....no new injuries.
James Kirkendoll will replace Goodwin at the other WR starting spot
Cody Johnson is officially the starter at running back this week (He was co-starter last week, but Fozzy started the game). Mack mentioned that Newton will finally get some touches this week, which will cut into Fozzy's recent workload.
The Big 12 and networks have claimed the 6 day wait on announcing the Kansas-Texas kickoff.......which will now be determined next Sunday or Monday. Seems as though the likely times will be 2:30 or 6:00.........outside shot at 7:00.
Update from Statesman:
The Texas Longhorns’ game against Kansas on Nov. 21 has been scheduled for either 2:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. on ABC.
If the Longhorns beat Baylor on Saturday, quarterback Colt McCoy will be trying to set the NCAA record for wins.

What's the deal with Kirkendoll?
Is he replacing Goodwin based on gameplay?
Wish they’d go ahead and pick a freaking time for the KU game. Wifey and I are flying into town to see our first live Longhorns game since 2004, so it’d be great to be able to plan the rest of our freaking weekend in lovely Austin.

Regarding Kirk...yes, and no...
MB mentioned that “they” (whoever that is) over did it in fall camp with Kirk and that by the Wyoming game he was “tired”. They put some fresh legs in and Kirk kinda fell off the radar. But after 3 games it is apparent that Goodwin’s and Chiles’ experience were starting to catch up with them. James had a “great” game v. UCF and “earned” the start.
Paraphrasing of course.
Now, not sure about James as a consistent player. I saw some good downfield blocking from him last week but I think he struggles against larger d-backs. Plus, I think he was a little in the Kennedy dog house for that bone head – head butt against OU, imo.
Well, he has the hands and has the experience. The good news is we have a freaking arsenal of receivers to throw at teams. If a game turns into a track meet, we’ve got that covered.

I can't wait for the Kansas game
Colt and Jordan’s last go-round in DKR. I might tear up a little.
3/19/2009 - Dogus Balbay Made a Three-Pointer. Never Forget.
What's the deal with Fozzy not getting snaps?
He has impressed me more than any other back this season other than CoJo, who I would say is playing at the same level. I like the thunder-and-lightening thing they’ve got going for them. What reason would Mack have for benching him?
If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!
I think it has more to do with just getting Newton some carries
Mack said Newton is “finally healthy”………I thought Newton was already healthy?
Newton had a concussion
So I’d imagine the coaches are being extra cautious with his return to an increased workload.
Don't understand the knock here on Fozzy
Although I am all for getting Newton some reps, the fact remains that Jamaal Charles couldn’t run behind our offensive line. The play on the line has been terrible. In fact, CoJo gets the most yards when we run out of the I-formation. Hear that Greg??
Jamaal Charles
In 2007, JC had a string of 3 games in a row against Big XII opponents where he rushed for 296, 180, and 175. I’d say he had some success running behind our O-line.

I bet ABC or ESPN give the Jayhawk game the prime time slot
because Colt will be throwing for all the marbles. It’ll be a HUGE draw.
"We don't freestyle Texas Fight, big boy." - Coach Brown
Is that the game he would break the all-time win mark for QB in NCAA?
or does he tie it? You’re right, that would be a good sell-piece for the game to have a 7pm draw.
well….assuming we beat Baylor (lol)
Someone please check the math.
Colt had 38 after the OU win. 39-Mizzou; 40-OSU; 41-UCF…….
He ties David Greene with a win against Baylor and he will claim the undisputed all-time winningest QB moniker at home against KU.

Nothing says “GIVE ME THE DAMN STIFF ARM TROPHY” like setting the NCAA record for wins.
"Stats are for losers, I like winning games."
NCAA record for wins
and NCAA record for QB Accuracy.
If any voters view it as a “career achievement” award, Colt has to be either #1 or #2 on their ballot.
Devils Advocate for Career Achievement
Would you rather have wins and accuracy record, or two natty championships and about to play for a third (hypothetically)?

Of course, no one has two national championships
At least, no current college QB has that on his resume. Tebow was a member of two teams, but was not the quarterback in one of them.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 9, 2009 3:07 PM CST up reply actions
He says he doesn't wear it though...
He said in an interview sometime back that he didn’t felt like he earned it, so he doesn’t wear it.
Tebow did earn his ring his freshman year.
He was a weapon – not the starting QB – but I think he prolly had double digit TDs that season.
But he doesn't deserve QB credit for it
When people talk about a QB winning a Super Bowl or something like that, they’re talking about actually being the starter or primary contributor as a QB. Tebow was neither the starter nor the primary contributor at QB. He was basically a fullback taking direct snaps.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 10, 2009 7:36 AM CST up reply actions
Is someone who scored 2 TDs in the win a primary contributor?
I would say yes.
So a primary contributor in one National Championship, undisputed (i think?) QB in another national championship, and possibly leading his team en route to play for a third national championship.
For a fanbase that claims that natty champs are the highest goal, you sure are quick to shoot down someone else s accomplishments in achieving exactly that.
by BoddickerIsClutch on Nov 10, 2009 8:29 AM CST up reply actions
You're confusing two issues
He wasn’t the primary contributor at QB. It’s arguable as to whether he played a significant role in the game, but it’s not at all arguable that he was not the primary QB that game.
I’m not shooting down anyone’s accomplishments. Chris Leak gets full marks.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 10, 2009 8:35 AM CST up reply actions
I agree..
Raising Tebow to QB for the 2006 win is a knock on a game Chris Leak. Tebow threw one pass (for a 1-yard TD) and rushed 10 times for 39 yards and another. Leak was 25-36 with 213 yards and a TD. He was the guy leading the team.
When Meyer took over Leak was written off by a lot of people as being incapable of running Meyer’s system. They didn’t really run Meyer’s system fully that year, which is a testament not to Tebow but to Leak’s skill as a QB in leading that team to a title.
Im not confusing anything
Are you arguing that the Heisman is a QB only award? That would be confusing.
I never said he was the primary QB, or any QB for that matter, for the first natty champ, I said he was a primary contributor.
The issue was if the Heisman were to be considered a lifetime achievement award, would you rather have the lifetime achievement of MNC titles, or completion percentage?
Im as big of a Colt supporter as there is, but if he heavily contributed to one MNC, surely won another as QB, and was poised to possibly play for a third in his 4 years, we would not give a rats ass about completion percentage or all time wins.
That is my issue. People want to ignore Tebow for not being a great QB, fine. But hes a hell of an accomplished college football player, second probably to none, even McCoy.
by BoddickerIsClutch on Nov 10, 2009 9:13 AM CST up reply actions
He was a gimmick at best in the title game
Not really a primary contributor. Do you think he was a determining factor in Florida’s win? I sure as heck don’t. I think they would’ve been more than fine without him. The credit he gets for coming in for what I think was about a dozen snaps in that game is ridiculous.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 10, 2009 9:29 AM CST up reply actions
I wish our gimmicks would score 2 TDs on the biggest stage.
I too think Florida probably could have won without Tebow in that game. That doesn’t mean he didn’t contribute. We could have beat UCF subbing Okafor in for Kindle all game, that doesnt mean he didnt have a great game and an impact on it.
And fuck me, the dude scored 2 TDs, how many points does a man have to put on the board to be considered a primary contributor? I don’t care how he did it. Was CoJo not a primary contributor to our win against OU last year?
by BoddickerIsClutch on Nov 10, 2009 9:36 AM CST up reply actions
Huge difference
The Florida win was a blowout. Tebow played about a dozen snaps, didn’t start, and none of his snaps constituted a pivotal moment in the game.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 10, 2009 9:46 AM CST up reply actions
And no, I don't think anyone seriously contends that Colt...
…contributed to the 2005-2006 title.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 10, 2009 9:36 AM CST up reply actions
I never said he did
I’m comparing Tebow’s career achievements (2 MNC, playing for a third)
With Colts (Career completion, total wins).
If the schools they played for were switched, this couldn’t even be a discussion.
by BoddickerIsClutch on Nov 10, 2009 9:38 AM CST up reply actions
Sigh
Okay, how are you giving Tebow credit for two national championships? He was a gimmick player, as I said. He gets less credit for that championship in my book than any starter on that team, period. There are no less than 22 guys who deserve more credit.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 10, 2009 9:45 AM CST up reply actions
Nothing left to say.
The point of the game is to score points, and dude scored points.
Your Tebow hate blinders are ridiculously strong.
by BoddickerIsClutch on Nov 10, 2009 9:53 AM CST up reply actions
The point is to play your role as well as possible
Not to score points. The point for a guard is not to score points. The point for a defensive tackle is not to score points.
Tebow played his role well, but it was a very small role compared to the 22 guys who actually played really significant roles in the game.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 10, 2009 3:26 PM CST up reply actions
The point of the offense
is to score points. Tebow did that. In the national championship. Twice. I think it’s ridiculous that you seem to be arguing that Tebow doesn’t deserve to be considered a member of that championship team.
If Mack Brown randomly threw my ass into the national championship game, God help him, (or I guess it would be GD, that would be more up his alley as far as personnel decisions) for a a few snaps, and I scored two touchdowns, you can be sure as hell that I’d take credit for being a part of that team.
Hell, I’d be more famous than Rudy.
I think it’s ridiculous that you think that I was arguing that he doesn’t deserve to be considered a member of that championship team. I never said that—not once. Stay out of it if you’re not going to bother to read.
by burntorangehorn on Nov 11, 2009 1:24 PM CST up reply actions
You basically implied it
By continually arguing that he “doesn’t deserve QB credit” when nobody argued that he did deserve such credit in the first place, and implying this lack of “QB credit” disqualified him from career-achievement credit at the same time.
and not only have I read
everything that you’ve written on this post, I’ve read between the lines as well.
Well
To people with common sense, this makes sense. But Heisman has been very disappointing to us for V. Young and C. McCoy last year. I’m afraid some weird reason will keep Colt from winning it this year again..
The Kansas Game
Should be the one that puts him way out front for the Heisman. If we beat Baylor and then a primetime run away over Kansas McCoy/Shipley style you would think gives Colt the Heisman and even possibly the Biletnikoff to Jordan.
How could you deny a QB who over the course of his career has won more games at any level of College football and just so happens to have done it in D-1 and in the toughest conference last year. I know it’s about this year and the 72.9% completion rate and undefeated season as a QB should make it happen over a sophomore RB who just happens to run behind the best O-line in the NCAA. Clausen will lose another game and be out of the hunt after Pitt, and you lost at home to Navy?
There should be a lot more news worthy press for Colt closing out the season over Tebow. It will be funny watching Meyer and ESPN try though.
Well knowing the Media Monopoly that ESPN has..
now that ABC is picking this game up……..you can bet all week long that’s all anyone is going to hear about is Colt breaking this record. 2 more good games from Colt with breaking the record just may influence enough of the heisman voters to make up their minds in a race where there is no clear front-runner.
Don't worry...
ESPN will give Tebow plenty of publicity – it’s the “mighty SEC” remember??
Clausen is all but out now that they lost to Navy. They will lose to Stanford or Pitt (probably both) and then who knows about Illinois – on paper one would think ND wins easily, but this is ND we’re talking about.
I have been saying this and I’m getting blue in the face from saying it…..
…..if you take Tebow’s name off of the stats and remove the Gator affiliation, NO WAY, NO HOW would Tebow be in the Heisman discussion. He has been average at best and done absolutely nothing that is “season-defining” or creating a “wow factor.” (One could argue similarly for Colt I suppose.) Or…
…..give Tebow’s stats to some other Top 15 club – say Stanzi at Iowa or Kellen Moore at Boise and I GUARANTEE you those guys would still not be in the Heisman discussion.
Tebow is in the discussion because of the Gator on his helmet and his past Heisman. Period. It’s all politics and no substance. Why else aren’t we talking about Suh (Nebraska), Masoli (Oregon), very little about Case Keenum, Dalton (TCU), Kellen Moore (Boise), Earl Thomas (UT of course), and probably a host of others.
While it would be nice to add another Heisman to the Longhorns trophy case, I don’t want the Heisman curse and besides, I’ll take another national championship hands down, without question.
ND plays Pitt, UConn (not UI), and Stanford
And may well go 0-3. And it’s Suh, Spiller, McCoy, and Clausen for Heisman, in that order.
Las Vegas Odds for Heisman
McCoy and Tebow each have 40% chance. Mark Ingram at 15% And 5% for Claussen and the entire field.

Interesting...
We haven’t had a game on ABC in the 230 pm time slot all year. Kansas game would seem to be a decent slot for us, but I’d take the primetime slot again if offered. That’s what… 4 games this year that are national? AWESOME!
True. Probably will be half-national
While the other half (west coast) will receive a Pac 10 game like Cal-Stanford or Oregon-Arizona. Both should be good games..
