Conference Championship weekend thoughts...

First, the Heisman will be won this weekend.  Whether it is Spiller in the ACC, Tebow or Ingram in the SEC, or McCoy in the Big 12, whichever player has the best game wins the Heisman.  Spiller is more of a throw-in after his loss to SC, but he is still an incredible player on such an average team.  The rest are pretty solid on solid teams.

Second, the TAMU game was not an establishing of a now-vulnerable Texas Defense.  Muschamp & our defense resembles the Omnidroid from The Incredibles, we just learn and get better when a weakness is exposed.  Tebow can lick his chops all he wants, we won't be fooled twice.  Had Griffin been healthy and played for Baylor a few weeks back, we would have faced a running/throwing QB before A&M.  That's the main reason Johnson got the deserved jump on Texas. Film is one thing, but facing it is another.

Third, because UF and Bama have played mediocre at times in big games, this one is hard to predict.  I don't think it will be a shoot out.  I will cop out and say first team to 20 points wins because I don't see more than 44 points total in this game.  Bama/UT would be a low scoring, old-school BCS Title game affair whereas UF/UT would be faster-paced and definitely more exciting BCS game.  Either way, I am definitely pumped that UT has a chance to finally prove themselves on the main stage yet again in the same decade!

Fourth, Houston wins their conference game with their high-powered offense & low-voltage defense, GT rebounds from a Georgia loss to take out Clemson, & the rest of the unbeatens stay unbeaten.

Finally, who's going to the Big 12 Championship game this weekend?  I am & looking for some good tailgating! :)

Ingram is in there too, but he’ll need a huge game and probably a Bama win for any chance at all.

Ingram would need to dominate to win it imo

RBs are pretty easy to compare, and Gerhart has had a better season to this point than Ingram. I dont think there’s any way he wins without a marquee performance on Saturday.

Totally forgot...

although I did mention Texas in the BCS Title game, I forgot Texas’s game vs. Nebraska. I think Colt will be unleashed to run and gun again & will total at least 4 TDs on his own. I think the final will be Texas in the high 30s and Nebraska in the high teens…

I'll be there, upper deck. I think Section 436 but I could be wrong.

I’ll be tailgating as well. Wonder what time the lots open up for tailgaters?

Texas/Nebraska history in Big 12

I expect this to be a great game, where strengths line up with strengths. I think our defense shuts them down, but the NU defense is the real deal. I don’t see us putting up 30 points in this game. Other than the ’99 title game and the ’03 game in Austin, all of our games have been tight, dare I say nail biters.

1996, 37-27 TX, Big 12 title
1998, 20-16 TX, Lincoln
1999, 24-20 TX, Austin
1999, 22-6 NU, Big 12 title
2002, 27-24 TX, Lincoln
2003, 31-7 TX, Austin
2006, 22-20 TX, Lincoln
2007, 28-25 TX, Austin

No one is gettin’ rolled in this game. I expect to sweat, pace, scream, plead, and finally gasp a sigh of relief as Texas wins another tight one, 24-18.

Would 18 points just about tie for Neb’s best offensive output this season? The D had a bad game last week, but I don’t think Nebraskas has their best offensive game of the year against the UT D.

by UT_BKC on Dec 1, 2009 12:14 PM CST up reply actions

Who said NU's points

would all be scored by the offense??

I foresee a Texas TO or lapse in the kicking/punting game giving NU 7 points. But I don’t see their offense getting much more than 2 FG’s.

This game scares me – too similar to the 96 championship game, only this time it’s a role reversal.

GD needs to allow Colt to run the ball, period. Colt running is one of the biggest keys of the game in my opinion. It will allow Colt to relax and serve notice to the NU defense.

by Go Bevo on Dec 1, 2009 12:50 PM CST up reply actions

Just for a little perspective...

Nebraska offense isnt very good at all.

In Big 12 play, Nebraska averages only 18.75 points on offense.
In Big 12 play, Texas averages only 39.625 points on offense

In Big 12 play, Nebraska averages only 13.125 points on defense.
In Big 12 play, Texas averages only 18.125 points on defense

Our scoring differential is over 15 points a game when compared to Nebraska during Big 12 play. Also, keep in mind that Nebraksa played the exact same schedule during conference play as us, except that they played Iowa State and Kansas State, whereas we played Texas A&M and Oklahoma State.

Here’s a few other stats to chew on:

Total yards/gm on offense for Nebraska: 335 yds (92nd rank)
Passing yards/gm on offense for Nebraska: 187 yds (93rd rank)
Rushing yards/gm on offense for Nebraksa: 147 yds (64th rank)

Nebraska will be the 10th best Offense we will have faced all year (Colorado and Wyoming being worse, but not by much) Univ. of La-Monroe, Buffalo, Middle Tenn St., Central Michgan are all teams that average over 100 yards a game MORE than the Huskers. Even with their easy non-conference schedule mixed in, the only average 25.5 points a game.

Yes, they have a great defense, but they only offense they played that was decent enough beat the hell out of them in Lincoln (Tech). They beat a gimpy Blaine Gabbert in a monsoon, and they beat a respectable offensive team in Kansas by 14. I give Nebraksa credit for being a decent ranked team, but they do not scare me nearly as much as teams we’ve already stomped a mudhole in this year.

Neither did aTm, but what the hell, Im back on the kool-aid too, we will stomp an offensively challenged NU squad. Ill probably work up another spreadsheet later this week like I did for aggie, since it worked out so well that game.

I'm not going to lie

A&M scared me offensively. They really have playmakers that are legit. Not so much on the defensive side of the ball. I’d be more worried if Nebraska had a juggernaut offensive personnel than a stout defense.

Having Fuller back made an enormous difference

Better scout him out a little for next season, of course.

by burntorangehorn on Dec 1, 2009 3:50 PM CST up reply actions

dude

Blaine Gabbert was gimpy because Suh spin him around, bent him in half and squashed him with his ankle underneath him. Our defense created that gimpiness.

When Tech played us they won because our offense made mistakes. Otherwise, we broke Sheffield’s foot, and kept them to around 280 yards. That game is why our offense has played conservative for the rest of the season – to eliminate mistakes.

Oklahoma – lost guard Brody Elridge and DE Auston English for the season after playing us.

There’s one stat you didn’t mention and that’s touchdown passes. We’ve given up seven all season. Three of us came against Colorado (one on the last play of the game) where we didn’t play well at all.

And you’re probably being kind to our offense.

Sorry about that Jon

Wasnt trying to take anything away from the D for the Huskers, and after re-reading what I wrote, I was a little off and didnt give them the respect they deserve. And you’re right, Suh did take away Gabbert’s ankle, and we finsished the job weeks later.

7 TD passes all season. Not bad. Not bad at all. So what do you expect out of this Saturday?

Not like it hasn’t been going back and forth in my head 1,000 times a day since last Thursday, and I still don’t know what to think.

I think we ought to have more fun throwing smack at each other, though. Ha!!!!

Oh. Hell. What I expect is a slugfest of a game similar to the game we both played against Oklahoma. I expect both our teams to bore America to death in a defensive battle to the last second of the game. Alex Henery has kicked a 57-yard field goal, the school record. What’s your kicker done? :)

is 20/23 on FGs and 59/60 on XPs. He’s also 8/10 from 40+ yards. I like our chances if it comes to that.

So Cody Green or Zac Lee?

I like your 16INT:7TD opponent passing ratio...

As well as your 18TDs on the ground… but the rushing TDs should be neutralized by a focused D that has defended the run very well all year; your 9INT:15TD passing ratio doesn’t bode well for an INT hungry defense either.

by TXinDC on Dec 2, 2009 12:26 PM CST up reply actions

I believe the Texas Defense will be the unit getting turnovers...

but I also believe Nebraska’s defense will do a good job limiting Texas to FG’s instead of TD’s.

Texas 26

That would be as depressing as a double-digit win could get this season.

Or 8 FG and a safety

or 13 Safeties
or 4 TD and two missed extra points (or 4 missed extra points and a saftey or three missed extrapoints and a 2 pt conversion).
or 3 TD a FG and 2 2pt conversions.

BAD. A win’s a win, but if our offense can’t score more than 7 on any team, I’m not happy. I know their defense is good, but our offense better score more than 7.

I predict a 38-10 win for the Horns

5 TD, 3 throwing, 1 rush for Colt. 1 rush TD for CoJo, 1 FG. 1 INT for Colt, 3 INT for Lee.

2 ints for lee, but pretty much the same score

they will happen to score a td either on some crazy quadruple reverse pass with blown coverage or in garbage time

Its going to take 2 defense/special teams TDs

for Nebraska to keep this one close. Otherwise, I don’t see how their offense can hang with our D.

Having watched several Nebraska games this year, Its pretty clear to me that they will try to take as much time off the clock as possible and make this a time of possession/field position game. They’ll run and run, and then run some more. They’ll work in plenty of play action and when they do pass, they’ll go deep. If Texas’ D has a big game, it will be because Kindle shuts down his side of the line, and Muckelroy and Robinson are able to shed their blocks and stop the run. Because of the play action, our safety play will be critical as well. I expect Gideon will be the one that provides help deep, and if he’s able to come up with an INT or two like he’s down with deep balls this year it will be crucial.

On offense, I expect to see us take that jet tempo to a next level. Pelini knows his best offense is his defense, and if we can take a way his ability to scheme and match personnel we’ll have a definite advantage. More than anything, I think we’ll be more effective running the ball out of the no-huddle than if we go at the conventional tempo. I’m not sure how effective the zone read play will be this week because this defense is disciplined and they’ll funnel everything back to Suh who will probably not have too much trouble shedding our blockers. However, GD will probably come up with a combination of screens and QB draws to try to neutralize Suh and keep him honest. Much like last week, our ability to put up 30+ points will come down to Colt making plays with his feet for 5 or more 1st downs. If he does that, we’ll cover the spread. If not, it will be on our defense to win the game.

To be quite honest, I’m not as concerned with Suh as I am with Asante. Texas has a dynamic offense, and a mobile quarterback. McCoy does a better job at getting rid of the football quickly than anyone in the country and we won’t hold McCoy back from running like we did the first half of the year. All these things can help to limit Suh’s ability to dominate a football game. However Asante was extremely physical (sometimes overly physical as he is prone to personal fouls) in all of the game I saw both against the run and the pass. Nebraska is able to contain the run not just with Suh and the rest of the line, but also with recognition and discipline by their LBs and DBs. Against Asante and the rest of the defensive backfield ball security will be critical, and McCoy will need to keep the ball down when we throws over the middle.

I expect this will be a struggle early on, probably as Texas starts conservatively so as to limit the huskers big play ability on defense and not dig a hole for ourselves. But at some point McCoy will get loose and will amp up the tempo. If both teams limit the other’s big play ability, Texas has a decided advantage in the red zone because of the weapons we have on both sides of the ball. I like Texas to win 41-16.

Isn't it nice to have intelligent, respectful back-and-forth with a knowledgable fan of an opponent?

As opposed to, say, YUMC or Beergut or any of the other aggie yokels around here? I’ve been to both UT vs. NU conference championship games, and I’m going to this year’s edition, too (section 437 FWIW), and without question, these are the nicest fans we deal with all year.

Just wanted to give props where they’re due, especially after all the aggie nonsense around here over the last couple of weeks.

Really? Does my signature suck?

Another Big 12 Rule that doesnt make sense....

Per Big 12 Policy, whichever state that the Big 12 Championship is in, whoever has a team in that state or division will be the visiting team. While The team from the opposite division will be the Home team….wtf?…..

by BMT_longhorn on Dec 2, 2009 11:45 PM CST reply actions

It's all about Colt...

Nebraska’s D has done an excellent job this season, but I think Texas wins by 2 TDs. Colt’s the different with him now running AND throwing. I also like a return to a steady dose of Cody softening up the line a little for some of our scatbacks to zip around.

Hook ’em!

PS Look for the Black Earl Campbell jersey lurking around Lincoln Square bars watching some Championship games before heading over to the stadium around 5pm!
