Hypothetically speaking - Husker game and Bama

After watching parts of the College Football Awards show last night and a handful of references made to players that used to play both sides of the ball......

Star-divide

I'm just curious what everybody else thinks about whether Texas should/could have used our defensive linemen (esp. Kindle and Houston) on offense against the Huskers. And should/could we use them against Bama (T. Cody).

Now let me say I know it won't happen - Mack and GD won't use these guys on offense. This is more about what do YOU think.

I'm not saying they should have played the entire 60 minutes (off & def), but maybe a couple downs here and there at least for some certain packages. And I'm not criticizing the offensive linemen (although they do need some improvement), but I can't help but think "maybe, just maybe Kindle and Houston could have held Suh in check - at least some of the time - to help give McCoy more time for specific plays."

Do you think it could work (Bama) or could have worked (NU)?? I know there is also some risk of injury to those guys for playing so much, but here's a real kicker - against NU, maybe Kindle and Houston only needed to play on offense. There certainly wasn't much to fear from the Husker offense - the rest of the guys would have performed just fine.

For an offensive line to be effective is has to have 4-5 guys who have experience working together, much like a QB to his receivers. These defensive guys may have strength but they don’t have the experience working with the O-lineman necessary to be effective.

Yes

It took them years of hard work and perseverance to get totally owned on every single freaking play.

We likely would have been better starting the five strongest dudes on the team, regardless of experience and with no practice.

+1

Getting Tray Allen more reps at guard early in the season would have been a better idea, now we have to make do with what we’ve got in the middle of the line. I expect a bounce back game from the entire line, however.

Huh?

Use Houston in the jumbo package with Antwan Cobb and Cody Johnson? I thought they did that at least once. I think that is almost always what they should do for short yardage plays.
Use Kindle at running back? Only offensive position he’s played at Texas, right? He was never going to be a blocking back or offensive lineman. Not sure how he would be helpful against Suh.

Bama is a big strong defense set up to stop the run in a run oriented conference, primarily

That being said, Saben will have them set up to stop the pass (ala Nebraska)…..if we dont make a serious effort at pounding the ball, it will be Nebraska all over again. Dont think Houston or kindle on the line would work for the obvious reasons. Cody is not Suh, and Colt is going to have time to find secondary receivers (Saben will blanket Ship) as long as we pick up blitzes, especially the corners.
All this is academic if we dont seriously give the running game WITH COJO , a chance to loosen up the defense.

Can't get enough of that cowbell !!!
