Few brief thoughts...

- It appears our woes to end the 1st half are gone for the most part.

- The newcomers are ready to contribute. Outside of Shawn Williams, Barnes is ready to hand out chunks of minutes to his fresh talent. Jordan Hamilton getting the most minutes in the Long Beach St game, despite it being a blowout all the way, was a positive nonetheless. I expect to see a similar distribution of minutes against a Texas State team that’s even worse than LBSt.

- How much of the offensive explosion vs Long Beach St. have to do with Pittman playing a season low 12 minutes due to foul trouble? While there’s no doubt he’s a net positive and he’ll be much more important against slower paced teams with size, against a much smaller team that likes to push the tempo, we might be better with him getting less minutes. He can’t really guard anyone on the court against a small team, and he clogs the paint for our penetrating guards. Barnes would be wise to distribute minutes based on the opponent matchups.

- Using the +/- and the per minute stats, it looks like the best 5-man unit in the USC game was Pittman, James, Mason, Bradley, and Brown. The best 5-man unit the LBSt. game was Johnson, James, Hamilton, Bradley, Balbay. If this doesn’t illustrate how deep we are, I don’t know what does. In two consecutive games, only two players (James and Bradley) appeared in the best 5-man rotation for both games.

Re: Points 2 & 3

Shawne Williams is an interesting player. He is built similar to Jordan Hamiliton and his play style is like Hamiliton’s but I wonder if it would benefit his game if he played more like Damion James. He has a long wing span and could easily fill out his frame, he moves like Scottie Pippen meaning he is a little faster on the court than what he appears to be going. I first thought playing a Connor Atchley, pick and fade out to the 3 line, would be a good use. Just not sure now, but looking forward to see how he matures.

I think the offensive explosion would have happened regardless if Dex was in foul trouble or not. LBSt. shot lots of threes and dribble drived in the half court set. I wouldn’t say they played a faster tempo because I think we dictated the pace. Dogus was so money that game, surprising since LBSt. was smaller.

Williams

Shawn Williams gets shortchanged because of the all the hype around the other three (and Lucas), but you can see he has incredible skills. Right now he is not getting regular minutes, which I can only attribute to a need for development on the defensive end. Like Hamilton, he is not yet meshing with the other players and needs to work on making the transition from star to role player. Stardom will come.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.
