Heisman Ceremony Open Thread

Tune into ESPN at 7 CST to find out if our boy Colt will win the Heisman. He probably won't though. Other finalists include Nebraska's Ndmukong Suh (that sounds familiar...), Florida's Tim Tebow, Alabama's Mark Ingram, and Stanford's Toby Gerhart. Ingram is the odds-on favorite.

Heisman night is one of my favorite nights of the year and I've been looking forward to it for a while. What are your thoughts?

Hopefully, Colt can outpoint Ingram

But I would not bet on it. Usually, the Maxwell, Camp, and Unitas award means the Heisman hardware goes to someone else. I hope I am wrong. Colt deserves it

It would be nice for Colt to win, but Gerhart is an absolute beast.

He would get my vote if I had one. He also has the numbers to back up his bowling-ball style of running.

Colt

I would personally rather see Ingram or Gerhart win it, not Colt. I’d rather have a national championship than a heisman.

Ingram

doesn’t diserve it. Has worse numbers in every catigory compared to Garhart. Plus he’s a sophomore. Only 4th your Jr’s ans Sr’s should be able to win the heisman. 3rd straight year a sophomore had won it? pitiful. change the name of the trophy to most outstanding sophomore or best performance before last minute voting is due.

by Ryan2907 on Dec 12, 2009 8:09 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Sorry but that is not factual.

Gerhardt had way more carries. About the same number of total yards(counting receiving yards). Ingram has higher YAC total yards. Ingram has higher per carry average. He did this while playing against higher ranked defenses. This may come off as a homer statement but the only person who performed at the same level vs great opposition this year was Suh. If Suh had won, I would have respected it. Gerhardt is a great back and from all accounts a great person. He is not as good a back as Ingram. He is a big back who ran over weaker defenses. Ingram has better field vision, made better cuts and broke tackles rather than using size to run over guys. This will translate to the NFL much better because Gerhardt will not run over many NFL defenders. OK, my Ingram defense rant is over.

Toby Gerhart and Ndamukong Suh are what the Heisman is about.

The fact that no sophomore won before Tebow in 2007 and now there could be a 3rd straight sophomore winner is laughable.

Also, I love me some Colt, but he didn’t perform this year.

I personally was rooting for Suh . . .

. . . but I was OK with any of the top four winning the trophy. It’s really one of those years where it’s in the eye of the beholder as to who deserves it, and there was a good case to be made for any of them.

I was pretty surprised, though, at how close Colt was at the end of the day to the top two — I thought he was going to finish fourth — and at how far back Suh was from the lead pack.

by Hopkins Horn on Dec 12, 2009 10:57 PM CST up reply actions

As I said earlier...

…I would have had no problem with Suh winning it. I think defensive players need to actually win it occasionally. They are the ones that win titles. I just didn’t want him to lose out to Gerhardt. Nothing personal against Gerhardt but his numbers were inflated against some poor defenses.

by BossierTex on Dec 12, 2009 8:13 PM CST reply actions

Is it just me...

or does Texas never get any respect? If you play for USC (Palmer, Leinart, Bush) or are a 0U system QB (Jason White/Bradford) or are Jesus, apparently (Tebow), you are a shoe in for the Heisman.

If you play for Texas, dominate all of your opponents, spread the scoring wealth amongst your team, and lose only ONE game in two years (VY and Colt), you get dismissed.

No disrespect at all to Mark Ingram. He definitely deserved it, as did Tobie Gerhart. They are some exceptional Running Backs.

It pisses me off when there are years like 2006 when Troy Smith won the Heisman because there were no other good players. When there are seasons like this when there are multiple deserving players , 2005 (with Leinart, Bush, VY), 2008 (with Bradford, Tebow, McCoy), and 2009 (with McCoy, Ingram, Gerhart) just ONCE I would like the Texas player to get the nod.

-flo

by bleed burnt orange on Dec 12, 2009 8:28 PM CST up reply actions

I disagree that Troy Smith wasn't deserving

I think he and McFadden were both better candidates than Tebow was in 2007, or Ingram in 2009.

For the record, I think 2009 is a pretty weak class overall. All the top candidates except Gerhart took turns sabotaging their chances the past week or two. The fact that Ingram won it after two putrid performances toward the later end of the season, essentially erasing those with a meager 113yds. rushing the last game, is a testament to how weak the 2009 candidates were.

by burntorangehorn on Dec 12, 2009 10:01 PM CST up reply actions

Name me the second "putrid" performance Ingram had

He had a bad game against Auburn where they stacked the box with 9 players to stop him. Auburn fans gloated about stopping his chances at the Heisman. He also got injured in the first series of the game. He played that whole game with the hip pointer, he hurt his wrist on the final drive of the game. Then he came back and accounted for nearly 200 yards against the then #1 defense in the country. You call a 113 yard rushing, 80 yard receiving , 3 TD game against the #1 team in the country meager? Yet a 200+ rushing game for Gerhardt against one of the worst defenses in FBS is stellar I guess. If people are going to play the stats game, they need to also look at SOS.

We would not be #1 or undefeated without Ingram in the middle of the season while McElroy was struggling to catch up to the better defenses.

Good find though but they also get a better SOS from losing to 4 of those teams. ;)

You could also make an argument that Standford would be undefeated with Alabama's defense

Gerhart put on a heck of a performance this year, and I don’t think his stats aren’t just showy against bad competition.

by notsofst on Dec 12, 2009 11:05 PM CST up reply actions

If you read my earlier posts...

…I also think Gerhardt is a great back and Stanford probably would have lost a few more without him. I just don’t buy that he is a better back than Ingram just because he ran for more yards on more carries. If you include receiving yards, they are almost in a dead heat for total yards. Ingram had a higher average per carry, higher percentage of YAC and was a bigger threat to catch and run. I think this is why it was so close. I would take Gerhardt on my team any day but right now, he would probably be third on our depth chart. I doubt Ingram will be a threat to repeat because he will be sharing carries 50/50 with Trent Richardson next year instead of 65/35.

To your point, Stanford would probably have won the Pac10 with our defense, maybe even gone undefeated. Also in reference to your post, Ingram stepped it up against our toughest competition. He averaged over 200 yards against our top 5 opponents(rushing and receiving).

by burntorangehorn on Dec 13, 2009 7:51 AM CST up reply actions

99 yards

is not a putrid performance. FWIW, Tennessee stacked the box on him as well. Now that McElroy has his confidence against tough defenses, they will not be able to stack the box. Also overlooked is how he stepped up against the toughest defenses, averaged over 200 yards vs the top 5 defenses he faced. He could have had a better game vs Tenny if McElwain had not tried to get cute in the Red Zone(went exclusively to the air).

How about Arkansas? 2.9 yards/carry. It wasn't the end of the season though.

Stanford faced 1 team that allowed between 100 and 110 yds/g rushing. So did Bama.
Stanford faced 5 teams that allowed less than 130 yds/g rushing. Bama faced one.
Stanford faced defenses that actually allowed less yds/g total than Bama did. Not by much, but less.

I think Suh was probably most deserving.

I am a season ticket holder and provide a small share of the revenue they use to run the program. Hell, even Saban has said that we are important to their success. Much like Ingram was integral to our success this year. Honestly, Texas would not be as good as they are without McCoy, Nebraska would not be as good on defense without Suh, Stanford may not be headed to a bowl without Gerhardt. BAMA would not be in the BCSCG without Ingram. So I do not find him to be a “pathetic” winner. He was as deserving as any other candidate. I could not have called McCoy, Suh or Gerhardt a “pathetic” winner if they had won.

Go win the trophy that really matters

Imagine being a Texas O-Lineman tonight…this past week has been nothing but a Suh love fest basically at their expense. Hell, Fowler even said it in his opening, “Ndomakong, how does it feel to have knocked Colt out of the front runner position for the Heisman.”

I think it was obvious to everyone that Colt’s/UT’s offensive performance coupled with Suh’s monster game in the Big XII C took the shine off Colt’s Heisman bid. But I didn’t really want to believe one game a Heisman winner makes. But it really hit home when I saw the votes. If you even take half of the first place votes Suh recieved (which I’m pretty sure came from several voters who had been in Colt’s camp before the conf. title game) and put them in Colt’s favor, he most likely would have won it.

That’s pure conjecture and maybe one of our great stats guys at the BON can prove me wrong, but there’s no doubt Colt was the front runner after the A&M game (explains why he cleaned up at the CFB Awards Ceremony in Orlando anyway because I think those finalists were determined before the Big XII C).

That being said, and before any Cornhusker fans get bent out of shape, let me say that I wholeheartedly believe Suh was an extremely worthy candidate and deserved all the votes he received. Moreover, the national acclaim he’s now receiving was long overdue. But the Heisman is not a defensive player’s award. It never has been.

I’ll also say that Ingram and Gerhart were worthy too, but based on Colt’s body of work, this was really his trophy to lose this year. And unfortunately, in mind anyway, he did.

Let’s hope this Heisman near miss galvanizes the resolve of the team, particularly the O-Line, like it did in 2005 when VY lost his Heisman bid. There is still one huge game left and redemption is there for the taking if you’re UT.

Go win the trophy that really matters.

The heisman is not a defensive players' award. You're partially correct there. It's a best player in college football award, which should not matter on what side of the ball you're playing.

Just because we only really see offensive players win the award, it doesn’t mean that it can only go to a player on the offense. It’s stupid that it always goes to that side of the ball when a lot of years, they’re not the ones with the highest quality players.

During most of our heyday...

…which I think may be coming back in force, we never featured a single player. Bryant had 6 or so backs that he would rotate. He never had a QB put up huge numbers because he played more of a ball control offense. Frank Thomas, Wallace Wade and Gene Stallings followed that same mantra. Ingram even only accounted for about 45% of our carries.

They definitely got it wrong.

Personally, I think Suh should have won it. He was the Nebraska defense. Without him getting pressure and forcing double teams, Nebraska would have had a much harder time penetrating so they wouldn’t have been able to stop the passing game as well as they did. Suh was possibly more integral to the NU team than Ingram and I think Ingram shouldn’t have even been in the top 2.

If you look at my earlier posts on this thread...

…I would have had no problem if Suh had gotten the nod. I think defensive players are as important, if not more so, than offensive skill players. I do not however buy that Gerhardt is a better player than Ingram.

Auburn and Tennessee fans are a lot like Slinkys...neither are worth much but you do get a sense of satisfaction from pushing them down a flight of stairs
