Top JUCO Dual-Threat QB Cameron Newton to OU?

Bumped, with video added. PB

Tulsa World article

Interesting development north of the Red River at QB. Obviously Newton's prior criminal matters in Florida won't scare off OU. In fact, it probably makes Norman a very good fit for him.

It is also very interesting that OU is so "tardy to the party" for the services of Newton -- who is looking to enroll for the spring semester.  Perhaps Blake Bell is having second thoughts about OU.  If he was not having second thoughts prior to this development; he should be seriously reconsidering Kansas and/or Notre Dame again with their new coaches in place. Bell played for Bishop Carroll Catholic HS in Wichita, KS so either of them may be back on his radar.

Eligibility

I forgot, do JUCO’s get a full 4 years or 2 years of eligibility when they move to a bigger university?

Also did Newton play at all, or enough, at Florida to burn a year?

by Jhal2315 on Dec 14, 2009 9:31 PM CST reply actions

He will come in

with whatever he hasn’t already used. If my memory serves me correctly he burned one year at Florida as a back up his frosh year and then burned another year this season. That would leave him with two seasons at OUsucks, possibly three if they decided to red shirt him for some odd reason.

plus he's obviously coming in to start right away

Stoops is wise enough to realize that Uncle Rico isn’t the answer at QB.

I don’t see OU using this guy right and I think he did burn a year at florida

by KingMack on Dec 14, 2009 9:37 PM CST reply actions

Yes please.

Cameron has 2 years to play 2 years.

If they took him it would be to earn a spot as the starter.

He really wouldn’t effect Blake Bell, who is definitely going to redshirt this coming season, he’s just too raw as a quarterback not to. It would actually be a good thing for Bell if Newton came in and earned the job because the offense that evolved around Cameron would be much closer to what Blake would be expected to run.

Surely not

I mean, he legitimately was a candidate for the best QB in the big 12 this year. Not to mention best superman impression in the linked pic. You dont just put that guy on the bench.

Haha

I just give the facts.

But to be honest I don’t know what my opinion of Landry is yet.

Maybe we were both spoiled by the insane Freshmen seasons of Colt and Sam…

besides the cool jams I don't know what that HS film is supposed to mean...

other than the fact the kid was proficient at hitting WR’s practially standing still with anywhere from 5-10 yards of separation two years ago? Let him go to OU if he believes Stoops that he will compete for starter he’s, well, a Juco transfer!!!

Thank goodness we don’t have to mess with two year wonders like Tech or OSU or apparently now OU, I’d take this as another bad sign if Stoops really feels the need to go after a one year wonder.

by longhornJ on Dec 14, 2009 11:15 PM CST reply actions

i think this is a lil different

Cam Newton wasn’t just a “normal” dumb kid. He had the grades IIRC, but did something off the field to have to go the Juco route. Also, I think OU has gone the Juco route before.

He bought a stolen laptop

Didnt steal it.

Now whether he knew it was stolen when he bought it… Well, he did throw it out the window when the police came to question him so you can draw your own conclusions there…

Stealing a laptop is minor compared with slapping, choking and then covering his girlfriend’s face with a pillow. Just keep everything in perspective, people.

apparently the only evidence that he bought it

is that he says that he did. Of course, Newton wasn’t able to name the guy that sold it to him.

You Okies will apparently believe anything.

I think you are mistaken.....

We “mess” with one year wonders up until recently. Symons, Cumbie, Hodges, and Potts (Please Jesus) where all one year wonders. Kingsbury and Harrell are the only 3 year starters we have under Leach.

Josh Heupel was a juco transfer

And he’s the QB who put that offense back on the map. Heck, he was the face of the OU re-emergence.

by burntorangehorn on Dec 15, 2009 10:41 AM CST up reply actions

ok-state better fit...

i think he’d have no prob winning the starting job at ou because of his overall skill set…but osu would be a much better fit because of him basically being the second coming of tebow with a much more NFL caliber arm. it would be in gundy’s best interest to scoop newton away from norman with some of that oil money(unfortunately its normally about what school’s gonna pay him more under the table) from big bad boone!

Newton

The last thing I read about Newton is that he seemed to be leaning toward Mississippi State. Dan Mullen was obviously his offensive coordinator and position coach at Florida, and he is more farmiliar with that offense. He could probably go in and compete with Chris Relf for the starting position.

Also, more than anything I cannot see Newton running an up-tempo offense throwing the ball around a lot. He would seem to be a better fit for the Meyer/Mullen type spread offense. The limited amount of time I have seen him he has never looked particularly acurate. He is a load to bring down and does have good athleticism.

by Kenny483 on Dec 15, 2009 6:48 AM CST reply actions

Yea most people still think Miss St will get him

Because they will guarantee him the job and OU won’t.

K-State also seems a good possibility

Of course, note that Bill Snyder has an established history of using juco and transfer quarterbacks right away. I think that has to work in their favor, although I really wouldn’t want a problem kid to go there.

by burntorangehorn on Dec 15, 2009 10:44 AM CST up reply actions

Cam Newton to OU would be a huge get for them. He redshirted 2008-2009 per his wikipedia page, so no redshirt for him at OU. Not sure why a guy with two years of eligibility would scare off a QB recruit. Especially if he has a good year and bolts like I would expect him to do.

by llogg on Dec 15, 2009 6:52 AM CST reply actions

Bell definitely ought to take another look at ND

with Clausen going pro, Crist out (likely for spring practice) with a torn ACL, and Kelly coming in putting in the spread, he could play early and look good doing it. Plus even though Tate is gone, there’s still a rock star WR in Michael Floyd to make him look even better.

by LonghornEm on Dec 15, 2009 8:48 AM CST reply actions

I have no inside scoop on Bell or Newton

But I find it very “curious” that OU would make a run at Newton this late in the game since he has been on the market for several months.

OU at QB will have Landry Jones as a Soph (Redshirt), Drew Allen as a Soph, and perhpas Newton as a Junior. So, even if Bell was thinking of redshirting, he would then be deep behind Landry Jones and Drew Allen and likely wouldn’t have a chance to see the field until his Junior year. That is getting a bit long in the waiting line for a top QB like Bell. Plus, there is that trust issue with Stoops that you always have to consider as a recruit.

by Wrangler86 on Dec 15, 2009 10:48 AM CST reply actions

Drew Allen redshirted this year, so he’ll be a freshman next year.

I wonder how much the aggie dual threat had to do with it

Stoops is desperate to find a way to beat Muschamp. The atm game might have opened his eyes to what might be with a true dual threat against Coach Booms defense.

by orangetower on Dec 16, 2009 2:49 PM CST up reply actions

he'll be back in the sec...

im sure newton wants to play in a power house conf with a team that has a chance at playing the gators, so the (overrated) SEC might be where he’ll land. im predicting ole miss will land him with the departure of snead, but ok-state would give him the best chance to show his talents.

my money is on OU

It is just too attractive for a kid with a checkered past to go to a school where you know for sure they don’t care about that stuff.

by Wrangler86 on Dec 15, 2009 12:12 PM CST up reply actions

Don’t count out Mississippi State so easily. He’s already visited Starkville and Dan Mullen coached him at Florida. Plus, he could go in and be a starter right away and not have to worry about sitting behind Landry Jones.

I honestly don’t really get why everyone’s rating him so highly though. He’s big and got all the measurables, but he’s not all that fast on the field and he’s not that great a passer. He can, however, run over defenders and that counts for something, I guess.

What they said about VY

And he didn’t do much in the college ranks either, right? This kid looks like he’s got the same range and stride. He doesn’t “look” fast, but for some reason no one ever catches him.

In-VINCE-able.
