Didn't I just read on the other VB thread...

…that Penn St. dropped a set to Hawaii before winning the match? Did Hawaii just steal our “break-their-winning-streak” thunder?

Really? Does my signature suck?

by adt2 on Dec 18, 2009 11:54 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

In the Penn St. vs Hawaii match....

The first set was dominated by Hawaii when the match ups neutralized Penn St.’s height advantage. Once Penn St. got the it taller players in better match ups they dispatched the Hawaiians. At one point Hawaii had only one player over 6 feet on the court and Penn State won every block.

It looked like the Hawaiians jerseys said Hawai’i?

Hawai'i

Isn’t that how it’s spelled?

by ElMariachiLoco on Dec 18, 2009 11:10 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I actually had to research this recently for a work project . . .

The official name of the state, in the federal act which recognized its statehood and in the state’s own constitution, is “Hawaii”. There has been a trend in recent years for the state government (including the University) to use the traditional Hawaiian language spelling of “Hawai’i”. I was recently in Hawaii and saw the spelling with the accent in most official places.

It seems to me, as someone writing in English, that this the same issue as to whether to refer to the large, French-speaking province in Canada by its natural French spelling of “Québec” or by the the anglicized version of “Quebec”. There’s not a right or wrong answer, but to me, for consistency’s sake, if you start writing “Hawai’i” or “Québec” in otherwise-English documents, then you should always use the native-language versions of place names. I’d rather stick with the anglicized versions.

Set, not match

Penn State has dropped some sets before, but not a match since 2007.

Takes 3 sets out of 5 total to win a match.

by Jhal2315 on Dec 18, 2009 12:13 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Over that time...

They haven’t lost many sets either. I believe they went the whole year without dropping a single set last year. I was surprised to see Hawai’i take a set from them. It gives me hope that UT can win now.

They've lost 6 sets this year

Texas has only lost 10 against a MUCH tougher schedule than Penn State has played.

TOO EXCITED TO WORRY ABOUT THAT NOW

that and the basketball game tomorrow

by Xerxes on Dec 18, 2009 10:26 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Seriously?

How so? There is a lot of action and it is face paced. There are many more boring basketball and football games that are played than volleyball. Aside from the obvious aesthetics of seeing athletic women in tight clothing, it is one of the sports where the women’s game is actually better than the men’s.

amen..

..also, you need to see Destinee Hooker, b/c she is GREAT, and I don’t think I’m using hyperbole. Since the first time I saw her, I compared her to VY. She is clutch. Check her final performance tomorrow. You won’t be disappointed. Hook ’em!

I've told my wife . . .

. . . that, if we have a daughter, I’d like to name her Destinee Hooker [last name]. She rocks.

Isn't that the name...

…of the gal that Mike Price got in trouble with, heh. Yes, we are capable of self-deprecating humor.

BTW

Good luck tomorrow night. I do want Texas to win “this” national championship.

she's a good volleyball player

but Destinee is an awful name. No comment on the Hooker.

PSU Streak Literally Unbelievable

While not a volleyball expert, the games I have seen are usually games that turn on hot streaks, emotion, who’s on, and breaks. Hard to believe that PSU has won 100 straight. Maybe the added pressure will help Horns Hook em tonight.

by realmccoy on Dec 18, 2009 2:47 PM CST via mobile reply actions   0 recs

Not only 101 straight matches . . .

. . . but I believe, if I was reading the graphic correctly, PSU lost only two sets the entire season last year on their way to their second championship in a row. That’s mind-boggling good.

Mind Boggling or Mind Bottling?

Kind of like when you get all your thoughts trapped in a bottle…

Come on, we're Longhorns...

Can’t we make the effort to type out “you’re” instead of “your”? I’m just saying…

In-VINCE-able.

Loud and proud

I was there on Thursday night, ‘Horn living in Tampa so very lucky to have them here. They looked good but it will take their very best to beat PSU. We will be cheering them on at the match tonight. Let’s go ’Horns!

Hope you’ll be head to toe burnt orange! The crowd has been mostly Nittany Lion blue from what I’ve seen.

Hmmmm

College volleyball or Cowboys vs Saints? Something tells me I’ll be looking in at halftime.
