Stills and Jefferson commit to OU

Star-divide

Remember Jefferson, he's the kid that wore USC gear to his official visit to UCLA. Figures a kid with this lack of brain power would pick Norman, OK.  He was run out of LA.  Stills is a pretty good WR, but word is that OU still SUX. They are up to 27 commits. Someone may be enrolling early, but you have to wonder which recruit Stoops is going to stop calling.  I can't wait to see D. White blow past Jefferson.  (They all look stupid in those hats). Hook 'em.

Why should I have to explain something that I didn't imply?

This is a fair opportunity for you to explain yourself……..

And for the record, my above comment was in no way intended to be “racist”. If I have offended anybody, I do apologize. I’d also like to take this opportunity to point out that normally, when one decides to throw the “race card”, that person or group of people need to look at themselves and ask the same question…… Due to the fact that they are more than likely “racist” themselves.

Latent racism is still racism.

If you have any background information on why any one of those three might actually be “thugs,” then please explain. If you do not, then you were judging solely by their appearance, which you even admitted to doing when you qualified your statement by saying that your “thug” conclusion was based on “when [you] look at these guys.” Appearance could include any number of things in that photo: skin color, attire, demeanor, etc. Surely it’s not the fact that they have OU hats and are giving the horns down. Plenty of non-thug Oklahomans do that all the time. Is it their demeanors? They sure look violent and thuggish smiling for the camera like that, right?

So please tell me what about that picture of three kids smiling for a picture giving the horns down screams “thug” to you. I would LOVE to hear you explain that. And while we’re at it, tell me if this picture screams “thug” to you as well, considering it’s more or less identical…

Okay, how about facts?

My mistake for assuming the profile belonged to the user.

Question: Did you or did you not base your statement based on their appearance?

It’s in the text of your comment, in fact it IS the comment. You just affirmed the statement a SECOND time.

Do you have any evidence to support the statement except the picture? Would you make the same comment if it were three Ivy League types wearing turtlenecks? Of course not. You’re making this observation based on a picture of three well-dressed(?) black kids so it is by definition a racist remark.

Now Jefferson may not be a future Nobel Prize winner. But I’ll make that statement based on his behavior, not his appearance.

by SpiritOfTheFedora on Dec 20, 2009 11:15 AM CST up reply actions

Facts?

What about my profile tells you that I’m of the female gender? My profile does belong to me “the user”.

Yes, I did make my statement based on appearance. That in NO way makes me racist. Judgemental maybe, but not racist. I’ll throw the racist comment out the door at this point. Nobody has the right to call anybody racist. I am not racist. It could be any race of person dressed like that and would have made the assumption. If you are dressed like a homeless person in trashed clothes am I to assume that your a CEO of a major oil company? Probably not.

I’ll admit this, this could be summed up as racial profiling on my part. Wrong of me, I was not raised with that kind of notion or background. I again, apologize. Just because I wear a 3 piece patch when I ride doesn’t make me 1% er, but I am aware of what people may think about me.

I’m going to try like hell to let this assumption go. But I would like you to know something. I lived in a horrible neighborhood when I was young. Two of my best friends, whom where of a different ethnicity than myself, where gunned down at the age of 12 while we where at the local park playing baseball. I for some reason managed to stay alive without a scratch, merely by the grace of God. They where shot at, to my understanding, for hanging out with a white kid. I still call their families twice a year (birthday and mothers day) and I still send cards. I swore from that point on that racism was about as usefull as tits on a boar hog. Before this happened, I had no idea what racism was. I was a young kid playing with friends.

I don’t want your sympathy or pity. But it is very easy to assume something over the internet about a person. Myself included.

Apology accepted

I grew up in a rough neighborhood myself, had much to overcome in the way of events during life. Was not privileged in many ways except the way I was brought up. I worked and educated myself though masters level working two jobs. No grants or fellowships.

I also spent two years in Iraq which taught me that the value of life goes far beyond money and most of all I learned the value of human respect. I will set down the race card for this instance and say that racism here is nothing compared to racism there. People die by the scores from racism over there and I experienced that first hand. Hell they were trying to kill me every day.

Let’s just drop the whole thing and not pity each other but let’s do consider those around us. We have fellow brothers and sisters of all types here and they deserve our respect. Hope you win every game except when you play us :)

Sorry to chime in so late...

But that was certainly a racist comment. You looked at a picture of three black kids and assumed that they were thugs. There is no justification for that. True, Jefferson may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but that in no way makes him a thug. They could all be thugs or they could all be altar boys. The point is that you don’t know, nor do I. You made your conclusion based solely on the appearance of the individuals. I don’t believe that either one of us has intimate personal knowledge pertaining to either recruit. And I believe it’s safe to assume that the picture that BZ posted would not have elicited the same response. I am in no way saying that you are racist. But you certainly made a racist comment.

to the discussion and I wasnt attempting to pile on, but I really felt the need to comment on your statement. Just as im sure non of us consider ourselves to be stupid people, but im sure we all have done stupid things. The question is why does the word “thug” comes into your mind when you are looking at a picture of three smiling, relatively well dressed ( at least attempted) young black men who are making their decsion on which college to attend?

Thugs, no doubt

What is Meyers doing? He is recruiting thugs and then giving out the weakest punishments when his guys mess up. He is a disaster waiting to happen with that lame discipline.

by Wrangler86 on Dec 21, 2009 9:59 PM CST up reply actions

Ok....

…. This whole Race thing has got me seeing red. I think everyone throwing out that word should look up the definition of the word thug. It has NOTHING to do with race. The word is Hindi and the English connotation is that of a hooligan. If he , she or it said those guys look like hooligans I doubt they would have been called a racist.

As for Iraq, (I was over there the first go around and served 8 yrs in USCENTCOM ) I can assure you that those people are not killing each other over race. In fact they are all Semites, save far northern Iraq and then you do have some Kurds. They are dying because of religion (Sunni and Shi’a) and over a struggle for power. Not racism.

by sahyouni on Dec 20, 2009 2:44 PM CST up reply actions

What a laughable argument!

Hooligan? What is this 1890? Obviously, language evolves. If someone called these kids faggots would you “be seeing red” because faggot clearly refers to “a bundle of sticks or twigs bound together for fuel”? It’s 2009 and thug is primarily used as a synonym for gangster— and no, I’m not referring to Al Capone.

by BrooklynSooner on Dec 20, 2009 3:11 PM CST up reply actions

Just drop it

If you say they aren’t killing each other over race I don’t know what to say.

Look up Shia originating from Persia (being Persian) and Sunni being Arabs.

And everybody shooting at Americans, at least while I was there.

I am not going to discuss this any further.

by SpiritOfTheFedora on Dec 20, 2009 4:45 PM CST up reply actions

Something based on appearance can be based on something other than race

In the case of the kid on the right, the spot-shaved eyebrows, the gaudy diamond-look earring, and the gaudy suit give off the impression of perhaps not a thug, but at least a wannabe-gangsta. Color? Well, if I saw a white kid doing the same thing, I’d think the same thing. Yes, indeed, a white guy with spot-shaved eyebrows, those earrings, and that suit, I would think the kid was a wannabe-gangsta.

As far as the other two, I don’t think they look like anything but kids who aren’t very good dressers. I don’t see any other conclusion to be drawn from them.

by burntorangehorn on Dec 20, 2009 9:38 PM CST up reply actions

It wasn't latent racism, you assumed it was.

Just like I assumed they looked like thugs. There are 2 parties with potential fault at this point.

I’m not meaning to harp on the subject, I just really dislike racism and people’s general assumptions with it. The term is used loosely and caution is thrown to the wind.

Mind if I change the subject?

I was actually wondering if next year are you guys starting Potts or Sheffield. I have heard a few rumors that the team rallies behind Sheffield way more.

Also, is there any concern this year that the bowl with MSU will be another trap game?

Thanks in advance.

by tblog123 on Dec 21, 2009 2:03 AM CST up reply actions

Don't mind at all......

There is no telling with the QB situation. As of right now, Potts will be starting during the Alamo Bowl. Nobody is really sure of the status on Sheffield’s foot injury at this point. It does seem that the team rallies behind Sheffield quite a bit more than they do Potts. Leach stated that there would be a QB battle come spring training. Which could get real ugly real fast. Between Potts, Sheffield, Doege (pronounced Day-gee), and RSF Jacob Karam. We also have Scotty Young showing up, but I don’t think they will even attempt to start him.

Our bowl game this year could be a trap. With MSU’s 476 suspensions in the last few weeks, there is not telling what they will do or how they will play.

with those hand signs. They are just posing for a picture. Doesn’t make sense to do that. Very disrespectful. Should be outlawed like the middle finger. It make it look like that it’s some sort or OU hand sign. It’s like hanging the cross upside down for devil worship. Horns=Good, OU= Evil. Looks no different to me. Jefferson's 3rd commitment

I just read that he started off a Stanford commit before he de-committed and gave a verbal to UCLA, I find it hard to believe he was smart enough to get into Stanford based on what he did at UCLA. But, maybe that is why de-committed.

On his UCLA commitement at the USC game: “When they saw me, they were all cussing at me, telling me to never come around Westwood again and things like that. These were guys that I had hung out with before and it was a lot of the team. I guess I kind of see it since I was committed there and was wearing USC gear before their big game but I still didn’t appreciate it.” (I’m sure they cared about your feelings-go watch Barber Shop with momma’s boy McFiction McFarland-what a douche).

How could a kid this dumb have met the admissions requirements at Stanford?

Finally, the Horns down is hilarious, espcially when Sooners and Aggies do it when they aren’t even playing us. They look like gang signs when done randomly and for no apparently reason….which could be thuggish I guess. But, just plain old stupid imo.

by Wrangler86 on Dec 19, 2009 4:15 PM CST reply actions

It just shows that

the Horns are always in their head. When they eat, we’re in their head. When they dream, we’re in their head. When they tour beautiful downtown Norman, we’re in their head. When they commit, we’re in their head.

OU is only in my head when I see a dog taking a dump.

While off topic

I do find it very interesting how quickly the posters on this site reprimand folks for making comments that are not PC. Sometimes they seem to jump the gun, but it is nice to know that the standard here is that racism is simply not tolerated or acceptable.
I was wondering about the new African American coach at Kansas and the gains made toward minority recruiting at top positions recently.

Does anyone think a woman will be a Div. 1 football coach—and in how many years? I’m thinking about that Goldie Hawn movie. Seriously, there have to be some good women football coaches around this country. Anyone—even a good female HS football coach?

I was commenting on the Bama page about how foreign I found the Charlie Strong discrimination

I mean, he apparently wasn’t facing hiring discrimination so much because he is black, but rather because he is a black guy married to a white woman. I had never actually thought that more than a handful of fringe people (and certainly not athletic/alumni boards) would have a serious problem with it. Seriously, the worst racial relations I’ve experienced in my life have been in this Baltimore-DC area, but I never really saw or heard it in Kansas, and barely saw it in Texas and California. And to not have a problem with a guy’s race, but rather with his mixed-race marriage? I had never heard of such a thing.
