UT Women's Volleyball vs Penn State National Championship Game Day Thread
7pm CT on ESPN2.
Destinee Hooker and the Gazelles will try to win Texas a national championship, and snap the ridiculous winning streak of Penn State in the process!

So let's try to remember tonight how fortunate we are to be seeing such a unique matchup between two dominant teams that were outstanding all season and elevated their games during the tournament. It's not often you get to watch a show like this.

Looks like we'll miss some of the first set
Memphis and UMass still have 3+ minutes to play, and it’s a close game, which probably means lots of fouling and maybe even OT.
Free audio and game tracker available here: http://all-access.cbssports.com/player.html?code=tex&media=159228
They said first serve is 8:12 on over at BlackShoeDiaries. No way this finishes before then either.

It's the Calipari Probation Classic!
I have no doubt Kentucky will be invited to play in this game in a few years.

Weird day for ESPN
First, they counter-program the UNC-Texas game with the 2006 Rose Bowl on Classic.
Then they counter-program the volleyball game with a Texas basketball game from 2003 on Classic.
And we can’t even get the volleyball game on classic right now because it’s being used as overflow for the bowl games on regular ESPN.
We need the Ocho.
This CBS gametracker is impressive
is the volleyball they’re showing really playing the entire sequence for each play?

Probably a dozen or so
Michigan took them to 5 at Ann Arbor. Only 5th set they’ve played in 2 years.
Which is almost awesome, as I cover Michigan volleyball on the side at mgo.

For real
I started kindergarten in 1988, and that even makes me feel old.
This is weird for me to watch
I played competitively in high school and college in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and there have been so many fundamental rules changes in the years since I played. Just weird to have rally scoring, sets to 15, legal serves off the net, liberos, etc.
Really impressed with how Texas came back down
They were down 3 at 22-19 and didn’t quit. Any other team in the country would have lost that set to this team.
Beat me by two seconds.
That looked blatantly out to me
Penn St must win this set, they have to come out strong.

This team has a killer instinct I haven't seen before
in volleyball. They do not give a damn what PSU’s winning streak is, and they don’t care if they’re down 5 points. They know they are good enough to do this. That’s why I don’t see a repeat of last year’s semi.

Is there someone who can start a new thread for the final set
I’m having serious problems reading and posting.
So freaking intense
hope they’ve watched some UT football for some inspiration.

Hopefully we won't have losses to the Redskins
and Eagles to close out the season and miss the playoffs yet again
Penn State's getting everything to bounce their way right now
And D’Errico’s been saving everything.

You’ve got to jump out quickly in the 5th set. It’s all about the fast start.

They only showed Texas highlights in the first two sets
no sugar coat. As a neutral observer, I definitely noticed.

That's cool then.
I wasn’t paying as much attention back in the first 2 sets so it probably blew over my head.

1st step to winning this set
stop the damn service errors.

Oh well, a lead’s a lead, especially in a short set.

isn’t it great to have so many of our athletic teams playing on this high of a level

by goingforthecorner on Dec 19, 2009 9:39 PM CST reply actions
Can we have one
loss where it isn’t the fault of the officials?
Give Penn State credit. If they play 10 times, I think Texas wins 6 but today wasn’t one of those days.
There were some questionable calls, but this was a result of unforced errors
UT had service error after service error, it seemed, and that really looks like it could have been the difference. It was extremeley close even with that and any officiating errors that might have taken place.
by burntorangehorn on Dec 19, 2009 9:48 PM CST up reply actions
Every team is going to have errors. it’s not about NOT having any errors, it’s about having less than the other team. Penn State had a lot fewer errors, including ZERO in the first set (even though that didn’t turn out well for them).
Great performance by both teams, but I hope it’s pretty clear that Penn State takes this one 9/10
I disagree
Although I admit that I’m not a daily VB watcher.

Heartbreaking. The girls had such a great year.
Hat’s off to the effort. They ended up having more firepower and showed real heart and character down 0-2.
Congratulations to the Gazelles. I am proud.

Choke
Yes, it was a great season and a a great match, but I don’t want a single one of them walking away from this thinking they didn’t choke. Penn State is very good, but we were good enough to beat them, and there is no excuse for letting them come back like that, especially considering what happened last year.
Too many service errors
when Hooker’s last kill attempt went too far out of bounds, you knew this wasn’t our night.
by goingforthecorner on Dec 19, 2009 9:40 PM CST reply actions
People, it's not "choking" . . .
. . . in a match like this when you have two obviously evenly-matched teams playing. Someone has to lose. The loser is not automatically a “choker”.
I find it hard
to “choke” against a team that has won 101 matches in a row.
It is choking when you're up 2-0.
We are far enough with our program that that kind of performance in a championship match should not be acceptable under any circumstance. Yes, we should be proud of what they accomplished this season, but in the context of this one game, that was embarrassing, and I don’t think the players or Elliott will say they are happy just to have played.
That's a load of crap.
Penn State is a great team. Penn State choked in the first two sets. Texas played their game. Did the best they could. Penn State just has a more balanced attack and quite possibly a better team.
There is no shame in this loss. They took the three time defending champions as far as anyone.
by formerlyanonymous on Dec 19, 2009 9:43 PM CST up reply actions
Disappointing? Of course. But coming within two points of defeating a team which has won an unprecedented 102 straight matches is “not acceptable under any circumstance”?
by Hopkins Horn on Dec 19, 2009 9:45 PM CST up reply actions
No
We are not some 2nd rate team that should be satisfied just to have played almighty Penn State and taken them to 5 sets. We are better than that.
Like I said, this team has every right to be proud of their season, and so do our fans. But this loss is inexcusable, given that they were up 2-0 and went through this very thing last year. I’m sorry, but a mental collapse is the only explanation for that. And mental collapses in a national title game are unacceptable.
Couldn't a possible explanation be . . .
. . . that PSU is a damn good team?
by Hopkins Horn on Dec 19, 2009 9:47 PM CST up reply actions
Idiot.
I went to the trouble of making an account just to point out how dumb you are.
You said “We are better than that” – if you were, you would’ve won. The loss isn’t inexcusable, it’s f*cking Penn State, you were expected to lose by the majority. There was no mental collapse by Texas. They played great, but only won the first 2 sets because Penn State was out of it. They started playing again in the 3rd and proved 3 sets straight that they are the better team.
I think you are caught in a web of misconceptions and you are brainwashed to think that Texas is the best team out there no matter the situation. From an outsiders perspective (mine), I can tell you Texas was LUCKY at best to win the first 2 sets. Penn played like sh*t the first 2 sets. Texas didn’t play like sh*t in the last 3, Penn state just played like they normally do – BETTER THAN TEXAS.
Hope I didn’t burst your little bubble of cockiness wrapped in iggnorance.
Great game to both, but Penn State deserved it and EARNED it.
Although I agree with the assessment that Texas did not choke, I hope I speak for others on this board when I ask you, kindly, to please go fuck yourself.
You know, since we’re the last fans you’d call classy and all. I suppose you would know, being that you registered for the sole purpose of shitting on a thread after a team lost an incredibly hard-fought and disappointing championship match.
by Hopkins Horn on Dec 20, 2009 7:26 AM CST up reply actions
Lucky?
Penn State got pretty damn lucky themselves. If the ball had bounced UT’s way on just a couple of occasions, this match would’ve been over in three.
by burntorangehorn on Dec 21, 2009 1:39 PM CST up reply actions
ummm..
Up 2-0, just needed one more out of 3. Would that be like being up 21 or 28-0 at the start of the 4th quarter then loosing?
Yep. It’s funny to me how most of the Texas fans think they “deserved” this win, when they pulled a similar Comeback win against Nebraska in football not long ago, and continued on with their cocky attitude that they were the best. Sure it’s a good fb team, but be humble. McCoy wasn’t watching the clock at all and claimed he “knew there was time left” when he got interviewed afterwards.
Another classy post
Way to go, nickw!
In-VINCE-able.

Great night! Great fight.
We witnessed a great Penn State team beat a great Texas team. I am really proud to be a longhorn tonight! I would have loved the win but you can’t have a stronger match against a team that has not lost for years!!
Hook’em and Congrats to the Gazelles and Congrats to PSU!
What's the future for UT volleyball
specifically with Destinee Hooker? Was this her last game? I don’t know if she’s a senior. I know that her other activities and the Olympics could get in the way of her playing again.
by goingforthecorner on Dec 19, 2009 10:14 PM CST reply actions
I think she and Engle are the main seniors who are leaving
Not sure how the depth looks otherwise.
Incidentally, I may offer Engle a job getting stuff out of the top cabinets.
by burntorangehorn on Dec 19, 2009 10:39 PM CST up reply actions
Ashley, Destinee and Heather all graduate
That’s a huge blow for our team to absorb. Think VY leaving, along with Cedric and Earl Thomas, all in the same season.
Texas will struggle next year, but just like in football Coach Elliot has been reloading not rebuilding. He’s had a top-5 recruiting class for years now, so expect the Gazelles to be back in the Final Four in 2011.

Destinee truly deserved a national championship. What a way to go out though. Setting the all-time record for kills in the NC game.

I'm reluctant to use the "C" word
given who we’re playing, but there’s a lot of ways to look at the game. Right now, it just stings. It’s another one of those championship games that just got away. UT baseball blew the save in the 9th inning against LSU that could’ve given us the championship. In this game, a few service errors among other “unforced errors” cost us.
You could say we punched them in the mouth early but they recovered just in time figure out that they’re Penn State. Specifically in the 4th set, that was some incredible defense and blocking by them, so you have to give them credit. While Hooker was probably the best player on the court, Penn St. was able to block a few of her kill attempts.
As someone who never watches volleyball, that was a damn enjoyable and intense game to watch – well worth a few hours of my time. Some of those rallies were absolutely epic. Just a shame we couldn’t come out on top. Either way, UT women’s volleyball did themselves proud. We can only hope our football team doesn’t fall the same way our baseball and volleyball teams did.
by goingforthecorner on Dec 19, 2009 10:35 PM CST reply actions
Nope, it wasn't a choke job
Keep in mind that Penn State had won 101 matches in a row, and their coach has won 1000. They are the only team in the country that has the athletes to match up with the Gazelles, and their coach has a lifetime of experience and lots of post-season matches under his belt. This Penn State squad will probably go down as the greatest ever in volleyball – and one of the most dominant ever in any sport. Thank god they graduate the core of their team, just like Texas does! Very little chance they’ll make it 4 in a row.
Still a Blaine Irby fan

Penn State fan here
I didn’t get to watch the game (it wasn’t on here) and volleyball (especially of the NCAA tourny variety) is just waaaay too intense for me. I get seriously worked up, hah.
Anyway, reading through this, I just wanted to say that you guys are truly classy. You guys exude good sportsmanship and I think that should be applauded. Kudos to worthy opponent.
Really?
You don’t have ESPN2? lol
I wouldn’t go as far as to call texas a classy school. Maybe you overlooked some posts, or maybe this thread just doesn’t properly represent the school, but I can assure you texas is the last school I would call classy (next to texas tech of course)
