Aaron Williams in the NC and other Defensive personnel
I have some questions about how we will use our defensive personnel in against Alabama
I know for most of the year Aaron has been lined up in the slot with the Brown "brothers" as the outside corners. How do yall see AW being used in the NC game since Alabama rarely uses a slot reciever? I would think that he has to been on the field just because of his athleticism and cover skills. Would Will Muschamp put him on Julio Jones? I would love to see those two guys do battle. Both should have long careers in the NFL in their future. The play of our linebackers is going to be so key in the game since we should have 3 backers pretty every play. And do we have any word on how Christian Scott might be used? I've heard he is most likely just going to play special teams.

One thing to remember
I wouldn’t change something up like that before the Championship Game. Let him do what he has been doing. Muschamp did some new stuff and changed some things before the Texas A&M game and we all know how it affected the Defense.
something like what? very vague. we implemented new things, didn’t practice them, and had a short week before A&M. i’m fine with coming out with some stuff that bama hasnt seen that will shut down/confuse their offense. we’ve had a month to prepare and practice our new shit. whereas against aggie we had like 5 days and took ’em lightly.

Here Is What I See
I see AW and the Brown brothers in a lot of man to man situations. They will really be challenged by Muschamp as he sells out to sell the run. Will knows if the corners can hold off a less than stellar Tide passing attack and Ingram can’t beat us – then the Horns have a great shot at that crystal trophy.
I'd hope for some variety of coverage on Jones
Stick one guy on him in particular, and have the secondary coverage in zone.

All The Pretty LBs
agree we have to stop the run first. If we can go up early and make them have to pass to catch up our chances are good.
Muschamp won’t have to sell out to sell the run.Everybody knows the Heiman winner will be in the house.Let’s hope we do what Auburn did to hold him in check.

With all due rspect , since I am in your house
I haven’t had the opportunity to see Texas play much so I only Know mainly what the numbers tell me. Florida thought the same about stopping the run. The Tide came out in a spread offense. MacElroy(a Texas native) came out on fire, which opened up the run.
Yes ingram did win the Heisman but the freshman(Trent richardson) had 80 yards to go with Ingram’s 113 rushing.
Although a great reciever, Julio Jones is struggling this year with only 28 yards against the gators but Maze has stepped up his game and had 96 yards against Florida.
The Tide has a lot of weapons on offense but has to keep from shooting themselves in the foot in the redzone against a really good Longhorn defense.
Hope I don’t seem as an intruder.
'Mark Ingram' is the Heisman Winner!
Not at all
Appreciate your perspective.

agreed, Bama can move the ball but has red zone problems when everything starts to close up. i’d say mcelroy doesn’t make great decisions/fast enough decisions when the field is short, but like you I’ve seen maybe 3 full Bama games this year.

Thanks for chiming in
However,
Florida thought the same about stopping the run. The Tide came out in a spread offense.
We’ve faced the spread most of the year and come out unscathed. And the Big XII is FAR better at the spread than Bama. That’s not to say Bama can’t be successful with the spread. Just not against Texas. Bama’s best offense is to keep Texas offense off the field. That’s by running the hell out of the ball. If Bama thinks they can run the spread against Texas like they did Florida, it’s not gonna be a pretty game for Bama.
I think OU's a good prep. offense for 'Bama
Landry Jones is a much more dangerous passer, although he makes more mistakes. Otherwise, I think OU’s a fairly comparable offense in terms of what kind of threat ’Bama’s offense poses to UT. They have multiple very talented running backs, one of whom can bruise, and the other of whom can be a multi-purpose threat. They each have one dangerous receiver, and a bunch of role players beyond him. I think the biggest differences are that Landry Jones is much more dangerous as a passer, while the Bama line is more cohesive at this point.

On the offensive side of the ball
I think Bama is much more comparable to Okie State (With all of their players healthy) Dez= Julio, Ingram=Hunter, Richardson=Toston, McElroy= Robinson. All of these comparisons have some variance in capability, Robinson is one heel of a scrambler. I think we have to look at last years game with OSU to get an idea of what Bama will bring to the table.

Spread not our forte'
I doubt we’ll see that at all. My jaw dropped when they started that game in the spread, but Gator def/coord probably crapped a brick. Point being, we kept them on their heels not knowing what to expect. That cat’s out of the bag now though. Gators see the spread every day in practice but weren’t expecting it from the Tide . Should be a great game. Can’t wait.

Hoping 'Bama blew the load in the SECCG
And that the bag of tricks is a little light.

As clever as Saben is.....
He will expect us to come out set up to stop the run at all costs, and will plan accordingly. The question is what the Horns are planning on offense, when the Tide comes out set up to shut down the short passing game viv a vis Oklahoma and Nebraska.
Can't get enough of that cowbell !!!

Bama has shown their hand. They didn't hold anything back in that Florida game.
Texas knows how they’ll counter when a defense stacks the box.
Hopefully for us, we still have an Ace up our sleeve to play when Bama gameplans to stop our short passing attack. Greg Davis needs to really earn his paycheck on January 7th and the offensive line needs to have the game of their lives.
3/19/2009 - Dogus Balbay Made a Three-Pointer. Never Forget.
Saban is an absolute mastermind
which is whythe Tide is undefeated. Florida didn’t make any big mistakes so the Tide defense didn’t score on defense. Saban ( I believe ) could tip his hand and create a new hand given a month to prepare. I know I’m a homer and may be drinkin the koolaid but I think he is a defensive genius. His defense will come from anywhere and everywhere. Y’all have more 4&5 star recruits from top to bottom (I think) but Saban gets the best from every player because they believe in him and his system.
Our offense has been shakyat times and brilliant others. Depends on which one shows up.
'Mark Ingram' is the Heisman Winner!
I expect nothing but Bama's best
Our offense won’t confuse anyone with looks. There may be a few wrinkles thrown in, but overall, our athleticism is what sets us apart.
Our defense, however… That’s a different story. I have complete faith in Muschamp to shut Bama’s offense down. Bama has some athletes, no doubt. I just don’t see Bama scoring more than 13 in this game. And that’s being generous.
FWIW, I think this game looks a hell of a lot closer to the Big XII championship than the SEC championship.
Only way I see the Tide not scoring 24 is you cause
McElroy to have his worst game of the year. I think you’re forgetting where the gator D was ranked before they played the Tide. McElroy had 4 bad games in the middle of the year, so it’s possible, but something seemed to click for him since.
'Mark Ingram' is the Heisman Winner!
Don't know much about Bama's OLine
But if anyone in the country can, Texas’ DLine can get to McElroy. This DLine is Elite. Florida was also without Dunlap. Not to take anything away from Bama’s OLine.
I cannot be convinced prior to gameday that Bama will score more than 13.
Greg Davis is an absolute mastermind
um sorry but I thought I could type that with a straight face. Nevermind
I will make a vow not to bash GD for a year if he can find a way
to put up 30 and get a W on Bama.
TEXAS FIGHT
I'll get a t-shirt
If Greg Davis can figure out how to score more points than Bama, I’ll wear an "I [heart] Greg Davis for a year! And, I won’t say anything critical about anything he did this year or any other year for two years.
I think I’m generating a whole lotta good karma here.

+1
I second that idea. Here’s hoping we get the chance to give him a grace period.
Every time I feel down and depressed, I think of seven simple words by a true wise man, Matt Leinart: "I still think we're the better team" and I usually end up hurting myself by laughing so hard.

If Will Muschamp can find a way to allow fewer points than Bama
I’ll be an enormous Muschamp fan. Good karma time!

AW
he’s been the starter most of the year, only on situations where we are in a nickel package or dime package does he shift into the slot b/c of his speed and ability as a blitzer.
by the time jan 7 comes around he should also be 100% again so he’ll likely be the starter with Curtis as the other starting CB, unless chykie shows something different than he has all year.
Agree
Hard to keep AJ off the field. At the very least a rotation between the two. I would like to see him man vs. Julio Jones, take away that part of the attack.

Watch the Tide TE's
These guys need to be popped and not allowed a clean release off the line. The biggest threat I see is play action to the Tight Ends. They were back breakers to Florida and are a big dependable target for McElroy.
Selling out to stop the run is one thing, but I think Muschamp is too smart to sell out anywhere. He will start out by playing our game with stunts and scheme’s making adjustments as needed, but I do expect an emphasis of some sort in not letting Bama’s run game get off to a fast start.
I fully trust AJ 1 on 1 with anyone. The AJ/Julio Jones matchup will be fun to watch indeed.
I hope to see Sergio Kindle freak out in this game and take over the Bama backfield. He can be the game changer.
it’d be great to get pressure on mcelroy all game from sergio, a couple TT style hits from sergio outta take the fight outta mcelroy.
we’ll just have to see. there’s so much possibility. alabama “tipped” their hand, however, Texas doesn’t seem to have a hand to tip this season. I don’t think that’s all that much of an advantage.

Unless GD was savin' up all year for this game thinking it was all a cakewalk anyway...
The game’s going to be hard to watch as long as the Bama D is as good as it’s widely thought to be.
TEXAS FIGHT
re-read my post, i said Texas doesn’t have a hand to tip

What?
are you you talking about? That’s a little vague.
by SpiritOfTheFedora on Dec 22, 2009 4:28 PM CST up reply actions
I am sure GD has saved something..
Whether it is something that will work or not is yet to be determined. I am more concerned about our offense than the defense. I expect a lot of zone read with Colt running the football in this game. Hopefully that will open up the pass game.
Game plan by committee?
Mack from yesterday’s press conference talking about Suh: “We were disappointed as coaches we didn’t do a better job of doing some things by scheme to help with him. Hopefully we’ll do a better job in this game.”
His statement implies two things:
- Mack didn’t like the blocking scheme against Nebraska, and
- Mack and some of the other coaches will be more involved in the offensive game plan
This is too big of a game to leave to one or two guys to draw up the game plan. I think Mack will put on his best CEO three piece and shoes and have heavy input into the offensive game plan along with the rest of the offensive staff. Who knows, maybe even Boom will be asked for input given the two defensive schemes are so similar.
I’ve been harping about the first point all year and others have been harping about the second point all year (GD game plans). I think whatever happens people should realize that this game will not feature a strictly Greg Davis game plan.
by SpiritOfTheFedora on Dec 22, 2009 10:48 AM CST reply actions
davis has said boom has been asked for input for several games, i can only assume he asks his input nearly every day.
