3/19/2009 - Dogus Balbay Made a Three-Pointer. Never Forget.
Jesus guys..
you act like the university is sponsoring this crap…some guy is taking advantage of the situation. It happens every year, with every team. In fact, he’s smart as hell for doing it. If we do win, he’s got a leg up on the competition.
and BTW, if Texas (the team not fans) needs crap like this to get them fired up…then i’d be worried if i were a UT fan..
"The goal is to be a champion," Saban said. "I didn’t say to win a championship. I just said be a champion. That’s our goal here. That’s what we want to do."- Nick Saban
Everyone always says that, but it's nonsense
Certainly Texas doesn’t “need” crap like that to get them fired up, but it can help. Obviously everyone wants to win the national championship, but a little extra fire can’t hurt. Even Saban keeps trying to downplay Alabama as the favorite. It sounds like he believes this kind of stuff can have an affect.

Acutally CNS
has been down playing it to try to keep our guys focused. One of the things that led to our loss to Utah last year, was everyone listening to how great we were. We lost to Utah last year, plain and simple..but it wasn’t because they were the better team..
Anyways, CNS has been saying all along, that the team isn’t even talking about this as the NC game…cause if you get too hyped, you’ll lose focus..its called “Avoiding Clutter”.
"The goal is to be a champion," Saban said. "I didn’t say to win a championship. I just said be a champion. That’s our goal here. That’s what we want to do."- Nick Saban
How is that different?
Texas is using the clutter for motivation, while Alabama is trying to avoid the clutter, because they think it will motivate them in the wrong direction (overconfidence). If this clutter is really powerless, then why would it have caused Alabama to lose their bowl game last year, as you claim.
we are talking about trying to find
ways to motivate players for the NC game…the difference is…Alabama is trying to avoid “bulletin-board material” and Texas (at least from what i’ve heard from the fans) are trying to find it..
One can distract you, the other only helps focus you…
"The goal is to be a champion," Saban said. "I didn’t say to win a championship. I just said be a champion. That’s our goal here. That’s what we want to do."- Nick Saban
You say that now
the difference is…Alabama is trying to avoid "bulletin-board material"
But I wonder if Bama used similar types of things before that fateful Florida game. Cowboys say they definitely used that before the Saints game… just a thought.
I can say with a lot of confidence
that this Alabama team didn’t need stuff like this to get up for UF…all it needed was the thought of losing to those bastards two years in a row…just like i doubt Texas needed it for the Texas Tech game…just the thought of losing to them again, and it taking away your shot at NCG is enough to drive any competitor nuts..
"The goal is to be a champion," Saban said. "I didn’t say to win a championship. I just said be a champion. That’s our goal here. That’s what we want to do."- Nick Saban
Texas played like shit against Tech
I think that the memory got our team too jacked up. I will say I am entertained that every time somebody on here decides to take some shot at Alabama, there is a ‘Bama fan who pops up and has to get their two cents in. I can’t remember that happening before games with any other teams.
If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!
i find it interesting
you seem to think its annoying that we’ve come over to talk….especially considering our conversation has been civil..and also that many UT fans have come over to RBR and said their two cents…
"The goal is to be a champion," Saban said. "I didn’t say to win a championship. I just said be a champion. That’s our goal here. That’s what we want to do."- Nick Saban
I for one appreciate...
all the received congeniality over at RBR. Its nice discussing football with people who actually provide useful information regarding the subject, rather than “my team is better than yours.”
ATX
Not annoyed
Not in the least; I enjoy increased dialogue with fans from other teams. And I certainly wasn’t complaining or aiming anything at you specifically bammer. I’ve just noticed how, whenever a Texas fan decides to talk a little smack on this board (inevitable) within conversations with other Texas fans, which happens every single week, the ‘Bama fans have been more persistent at making sure their counter-arguements are heard. Again, I wasn’t taking any shots, and didn’t mean it if it was inferred that I was aggravated in any way. Every ‘Bama fan I’ve seen here at BON has been completely respectful and knowledgeable.
If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!
Re: Bammer
Are we really getting on this guy? I’m confused.

I know
I hope he’s not thinking we’re lamblasting him? I think it’s cool for him to come over. Nice folks in ’bama.
He needs to get in on some of the ou sucks garb to get a real feel of hate mongering.
Take it easy Bammer. It’s all good.
I think I speak for all Texas fans
when I say that the better team always wins. We may always begrudge them the win, thinking we’re the superior athletically or schematically, but in my experience, that notch in the W column counts for a lot.
Still, your defense of your team is appreciated. The passion and loyalty of the fans are what make collegiate sports so entertaining. Best of luck to both our teams on the 7th.
Every time I feel down and depressed, I think of seven simple words by a true wise man, Matt Leinart: "I still think we're the better team" and I usually end up hurting myself by laughing so hard.

Matt Lienart disagrees with you......
and I just read your signautre, so we’re on the same page.

"The goal is to be a champion," Saban said. "I didn’t say to win a championship. I just said be a champion. That’s our goal here. That’s what we want to do."- Nick Saban
I suppose it depends on how you define "better"
I define it to mean better at beating the other team at the game of football.
You obviously define it in some subjective way.
did you think
that Ole Miss last year was a better football team than Florida?
"The goal is to be a champion," Saban said. "I didn’t say to win a championship. I just said be a champion. That’s our goal here. That’s what we want to do."- Nick Saban
I guess you could say
sometimes bad officiating results in the “better” team losing.
One could argue that happened in the Pittsburgh-Seattle Superbowl, and the playoffs leading up to it. Or, of course, the USA-Russia BBall game in the ’72 Olympics. That was a biggie.
I keep watching the end of that bball game
and still can’t wrap my head around it
by billycthulhu on Dec 22, 2009 3:33 PM CST up reply actions
Then how do you determine who is better?
Determining which team is better is done on the field. Texas was better than every team they played this year, as was Alabama. If either of them had lost a game, it’s obvious the team that beat them was the better team, whether it’s for a game, a half, a quarter, a drive, or a play the team that wins is the better team.
Hang 'em!!!
by Screwface on Dec 22, 2009 3:20 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Of course
Ole Miss was “better” that game, but obviously Florida had the better team. As an observer, you can look back and come to the conclusion that though Ole Miss played a great game, UF was better…hence the crazy run they went on, ending in a NC…
But thats looking at the season as a whole…
"The goal is to be a champion," Saban said. "I didn’t say to win a championship. I just said be a champion. That’s our goal here. That’s what we want to do."- Nick Saban
The difference in this game
is both our seasons include 13 wins, no losses until this one game. We both had some blowouts and we both had bumps along the road. So this is what the season as a whole comes down to – whoever wins this is the better team.
For Utah last year, I think the “bulletin board fair” was part of it, but of course you have Andre Smith out and his backup injured very early in the game. And the Sugar Bowl was a disappointment for us, whereas this is exactly the game we want to be in.
by billycthulhu on Dec 22, 2009 3:32 PM CST up reply actions
You lost to Utah last year...
because there was nothing to play for after the loss in the SECCG. The Sugar Bowl was a complete disappointment of an assignment.

Let's get a new line, shall we?
and BTW, if Texas (the team not fans) needs crap like this to get them fired up…then i’d be worried if i were a UT fan..
Every fanbase looks for “bulletin board” material. EVERY fanbase. If you think the Bama fanbase is exempt, you’re mistaken. It seems like this has been the rallying cry for every Tide fan that comes here.
How about those players that lose a loved one and dedicate the season/game to that person. Is that motivation lost because their only motivation should be the game itself? Motivation comes in many forms. And those forms are not mutually exclusive.
wow..
what part of..
if Texas (the team not fans)
Did you not get?
"The goal is to be a champion," Saban said. "I didn’t say to win a championship. I just said be a champion. That’s our goal here. That’s what we want to do."- Nick Saban
You missed my point entirely. The team doesn’t need any extra motivation, but they’ll take it when they get it. You must have stopped reading before this:

motivation is motivation...but..
we were having this exact same argument with Utah fans last year..but this time..its with Texas fans..wtf? i know the media is trying to spin this like Alabama has it in the bag, but that couldn’t be further from the truth..Utah needed stuff like this to dig deep inside for the extra “umph” to pull out the win…So i guess my point is..
When you’re Texas…you don’t need bulletin-board material…
"The goal is to be a champion," Saban said. "I didn’t say to win a championship. I just said be a champion. That’s our goal here. That’s what we want to do."- Nick Saban
Believe me
I appreciate the fact that Tide fans are not acting all superior in every way (looking at you USC). The condescending nature of the media rubs us the wrong way and we often get the short end of the stick because people think we (the fans) feel entitled. The honest truth is, the only thing we feel entitled to is a little f’n respect. Something Bama fans seem to be doling out.
It’s utterly amazing the lack of trash talk between the two fanbases. Mutual respect is making this an even harder game to give an honest assessment for. I can honestly say, I can see this game going either way, any number of ways.
Sorry, but I couldn't resist...
A little extra “umph” to pull out a win??? Utah dominated Alabama. If Utah had squeeked by, I could give you this, but Utah was far and away the better team last year. You really can’t dispute this.
I think I might go the opposite direction of you on this one. Last year, Utah had all the motivation it needed in wanting to prove they were the best team in the country (which they truly believed they were), despite being in a “lesser” conference. They shouldn’t have needed any more bulletin board material than that.
This year, both Texas and Bama have legitimate claims that they are the best team in the country, and will get a chance to prove so on the field against one another. Any small edge you can get over your opponent, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could end up being the difference. Texas may not need bulletin board material, but that doesn’t mean they won’t use it if provided.
Sometimes the impossible can become possible if you're AWESOME!

Come on man…First, let me make this clear. I am a huge Alabama fan and have been my entire life. But i am also a huge college football fan. I do my best to follow all the conferences and at least have a handle on the overall scope of the league…
That being said…Utah beat us..plain and simple. They were better prepared and more motivated to win. I’m not going to sit here and list the reasons why we lost but just say…yeah..they won..
What i will argue with is the notion that Utah would have won no matter what…As if all the outside distractions for Bama before the game played no part. My statement about them “pulling out the win” was a reference to them knowing that it would take their very best to win. That they couldn’t just show up and dominate. They knew this and thats why they came out the way they did. It has been widely documented that Utah used the “no one is respecting us” card the entire month before the game..
Utah played a great. I don’t want to take anything away from their victory. But i just can’t agree that they were the better team, in the context of looking at the entire season…just like i don’t think that Texas Tech was really a better football team than UT last year.

This statement goes against your arguement
As if all the outside distractions for Bama before the game played no part.
You say that Texas shouldn’t need extra motivation, but motivation is an outside influence. It works both ways.
Utah dominated the first, what, 7 minutes of that game? Once Alabama finally woke up and realized oh, hey, Utah isn’t just going to roll over and let us win, the domination stopped. Alabama was too far behind at that point to pull out the comeback win, but the assertion that Utah dominated the game is just silly.
I'm wrong all the time.
If by “just silly” you meant “accurate,” then you’d be correct.

My opinion
is that IF (most of us aren’t taking it for granted) we win the championship game, Bama should just stop claiming the 1941 title and keep all the 12 stuff up. I’m tired of catching flak for that.
Well I personally wouldn't claim it anyway. I don't have any "12" related merchandise
Not all my fellow Bama fans might agree with me though.

Bama Fans....
As a bama fan here in Birmingham, I can tell you that all of the Bama fans I know are NOT taking this game for granted and counting this as a win. We all know that Texas is VERY capable of beating us and that we need to play just as well against Texas as we did against Florida to be sure of anything.
Roll Tide!
This seems to be the overwhelming majority from what we can tell out of true fans. And we appreciate the respect. It’s a rare occurrence, indeed.
Personally, I find this game extremely difficult to gauge. On one hand, you have a team that had to block 2 FG’s to beat Tenn. and struggled mightily against Auburn. Then on the other hand, you are undefeated and complitely dominated Florida. I see a team that’s capable of repeating this, but will they? My bias makes me lean toward Texas in this one. Reality draws me back to neutral, though.
Agree
Personally, I find this game extremely difficult to gauge.
It has become impossible to gauge this one beforehand, for all the reasons listed above. All the arguments on all the boards seem to reduce down to that — though I do enjoy the discussion. It’s just gonna come down to execution, coaching, intangibles, etc. on that gameday. Really, a coin flip.
The best part of the whole deal.....
We have nothing to lose, if we lose then I will be crushed (and out of a lot of money after making the trip to LA) but I guess i will know that Bama was just that good and the better team and I can come back to the paradise we know as Austin, TX. If Bama loses then holy hell…..everyone of those fools are going to have to look themselves in the mirror and slap themselves for KNOWING that they are going to win and blowing it….then realize that they have to go back to the hell hole known as Alabama. The state that holds the dong of America(Florida) on the map. Sweet
Hell hole known as Alabama?
Obviously you have never been to Mi’ssippi.
MATRIX: Bennett, I thought you were--
BENNETT: Dead? You thought wrong. Ever since you had me thrown out of the unit, I've been waiting to pay you back. Do you know what today is, Matrix? Payday.
Maybe
The only part of Alabama they’ve been to is Auburn?

The real hell hole resides in Texas, it’s the 6 1/2 hours between Dallas and Livingston. Nothing but barren wasteland.

13 NCs?
Aren’t some (if not half) disputed?
Go to a barner website
And it probably won’t take long to find some rant or video disputing about half of them. In my humble homer opinion, there are good counterarguments to all of those.
Well, except 1941. I just have to admit that we really shouldn’t claim that one.

From an OU fan.......
This is totally off topic but I just want to say that Alabama has great fans. I’ve even lived in LA (Lower Alabama) for two years at Ft. Rucker and most Bama fans that I interacted with were pretty cool. Not to mention, Bama fans increased my opinion on them during the OU-Bama series in 02-03. Nothing but respect. Auburn fans weren’t bad neither. I was in Alabama when Auburn was at their peak (2004-2005)………………BOOMER!
