Alabama All Day: The Screen Game

Throughout the first half, one of the few areas in which Florida had found serious success was in bringing a blitz from the corner. Alabama patiently took its lumps and then, with four minutes left in the first half, made the Gators pay.

Alabama_01_medium

A corner blitzer creeps in pre-snap (top of the screen).

Star-divide

Alabama_02_medium

Ingram stays in to pick up the blitzing corner...

Alabama_03_medium

Bama's linemen start to release upfield and you know what's coming...

Alabama_04_medium

Yup, Ingram lets the corner fly right by and turns to receive the screen. Two Bama linemen converge on the one Gator still in position to make a play.

Alabama_05_medium

McElroy easily finds Ingram, who races upfield for 69 yards, the lone Florida linebacker smothered by two blockers.

This is the play

that probably sealed the Heisman for Ingram.

really did not deserve the heisman...

I am sick of the insanity that surrounds this award. Suh should have won it. He was, without question, the very best player in CFB this season. Catching a screen pass and running full speed is more of a blessing and design and execution by the 10 other players on your side of the ball. Simply put, you cannot make money on apple stock if the company begins to churn out garbage.

That's why I think Gerhart was more deserving

Stanford can’t block near as well as Bama, but Gerhart is able to dodge defenders on his own despite having an inferior team surrounding him. I thought Suh should have gotten it, but if you’re going to give it to a RB, Gerhart is the guy.

Sure wouldn't want to have been in that will LB's shoes

in the next to last frame. Two big dudes coming down on him and no help. Thoughts going through his mind—‘Oh sh**’. Florida looked like a high school team on this play.

Yep!

Stanford boy gets it otherwise (and he’d have been deserving as well, though Suh was No. 1 in my book from midseason on).

Once he

gets drafted and they hand him #1-2 money he will have forgotten all about his trip to NY.

Suh( a pure beast) single handedly shut down the Texas offense in a losing effort

while Ingram (out of the wildcat)single handedly won the South Carolina game for the Tide. That was the difference for me.

did mcelroy audible to the screen when he saw the corner creeping in?

or was that just by chance that they were blitzing against a screen

by thebrat on Dec 23, 2009 2:45 PM CST reply actions

Couldn't have been a hot route

because the OL was clearly setting up a screen.

This was Bama’s first play after a Florida TD—MCElwain probably guessed the Gators would be pumped up and blitzy, so he called the screen.

Good Discussion of Bama

I found the article on Bama to be one of the best that I have read. I have watched all the Bama games, and I would not disagree with you on your overall assessment. There are a couple of comments that you made that I do have some disagreement, such as on our defense and Reamer, but your views are fair and reasonable. I have not watched either Texas or Nebraska play. I do not mean that to be a slight of any kind, but I am a SEC homer, and I watch the SEC teams. You mentioned that Florida left points off of the scoreboard because of missed plays. Bama also left points off of the scoreboard because of some dropped passes and missed assignments. Has there ever been a football game played that every play was successful? This woulda, coulda, shoulda serves no useful purposes. I can predict that in the BCS Bowl there are going to be more points left on the field rather than on the scoreboard. It is not how many points you could have had, but how many you actually had.
Bama dominated Florida in every area. It could have been worse if Saban had decided to run up the score. Surely you noticed that? You are grossly underestimating Bama’s defense and making some unfair comparisons. You do realize that Bama runs a 3-4 defense? Our O line is not designed to make sacks or blitzes. It can put pressure on the qb, but our LB’s and Safties are the ones that are designed to make the sacks. I have seen this unfair comparison with 4-4 and 4-3 defenses made all the time. It will be interesting to find out after the game if Nebraska and Oklahoma’s defenses are superior to Bama’s. I believe that Bama is far better than either of these teams on defense, but we shall see. Also, we’ll see if the longhorns burn Arenas. No one else has this year. Just as Tebow.

Ok, Bama has a good defense...

…that cannot be dismissed. But through the vast majority of the season their top scoring threat on offense was Tiffin. Let’s not forget that the Tide had a very tough time all year getting into the end zone…against far worse defenses than what Texas will bring.

One game, whether Texas/Nebraska or Alabama/Florida, does not a season make.

One game does not make a season

I agree that one game does not make a season. Bama did struggle against Tennessee and Auburn. I have reminded by fellow Tiders of that very fact. The fact that Bama played exceptionally well against Florida and the Longhorns struggled against Texas A&M and Nebraska does not indicate what will happen in the BCS Bowl. The SEC and the SWC play two entirely different kinds of football. Both are going into the BCS Bowl blind. Can Texas adjust to SEC speed? Can Bama adjust to McCoy and the spread? No scout team can perfectly simulate either team’s offense and defense.

I believe Arenas(though I Love the kid) did get burned against Florida

Maybe he was expecting backside help, but I felt he bit and got bit.
I thought with exception of Reamer, this series is as objective and accurate as any articles I’ve read including from our own RBR moderators.

Arenas and getting burned?

I cannot be certain that he was not burned. Maybe he was. Saban’s defensive schemes are so complicated that it is impossible FOR ME to determine who is suppose to do what. I was thinking about Arenas’ interception of Tebow in the end zone. He was certainly not burned on that pass route.

by nosterrex on Dec 23, 2009 10:41 PM CST up reply actions

The talk about how many points were left on the field

is relevant when discussing scheme and tendencies. What I got out of watching the SEC CCG is that the Bama defense is very solid, with some positions being excellent. But a properly executed offense with similarly talented players can move the ball and score against them.

Also Tebow is not good at reading defenses and going through his progressions. He missed two wide open receivers off the top of my head that would have been easy TDs. He even had time to throw to them, he just didn’t look that direction.

by sessamoid on Dec 23, 2009 9:40 PM CST reply actions

Tebow and reading defenses.

I do not know what to say about Tebow not reading defenses. The guy is a Heisman Trophy winner, the leader of a team that has won two national championships, and went 12-1 this season. If he cannot read defenses, who can? I do not mean to be disparaging to you personally, but do you guys believe that anyone in the SEC can or ever has played quarterback as well as McCoy has? Maybe the Crimson Tide should not bother to show up? According to you guys, none of us can play football.

by nosterrex on Dec 23, 2009 10:47 PM CST up reply actions

Lots of straw men

I have an opinion. You disagree, but instead of just that you put words in my mouth. Nice.

I don’t think Tebow is good at reading defenses and going through his progressions. He’s actually considering playing fullback in the Senior Bowl. Would he do that if the NFL people were telling him he was a sure QB at the next level?

McElroy is probably a better passing quarterback than Tebow now.

by sessamoid on Dec 24, 2009 6:34 AM CST up reply actions

Tebow,IMO< is as good of a College QB as is out there

but with the bigger, faster, and more skilled lineman in the NFL his mechanics ( very slow wind-up) are not suited for QB play in NFL. He wants to play in the NFL whether that be at QB,TE, or FB. He is a great competitor and a superb athlete .Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad he’s gone but he has earned my respect.

Didn't mean to create a strawman

I was not aware that I was creating a strawman. That was certainly not my intention. To say that Tebow cannot read defenses and that his progression is slow seems counter intuitive. I guess I have to ask myself slow in comparison to whom? The SEC has the reputation of having the best defenses in the nation. If a qb can read SEC defenses and have a high passing percentage, I do not understand how Tebow can be as bad as a qb as you seem to think that he is. I know that there are those that think that Tebow will be drafted as a half back or tight end; however, if you talk to Tebow, he is going to sign as a qb in the pros. He is convinced that the can play qb. Personally, I have no idea if that is realistic or not. I would not underestimate Tebow.

by nosterrex on Dec 25, 2009 5:32 PM CST up reply actions

The reason for susccess on this play.

4 receivers went down field taking the secondary with them and spread them out over 30 yards of field. the secondary was to widely spaced to stop a runner like Ingram.

If the offense sends 3 receivers streaking down the field they will take 3-5 players with them. Then the offense can get get 8 on 6. If your receivers are not especially good blockers it better they run their defenders out of the play than attempt some half assed block.

Looking at the last frame, in the 15 yards from the LOS you could guess that Alabama had 5 men ( 4 blockers and Ingram) in that area and Florida had maybe 2 if 4 went with the 4 receivers. Since two were on the opposite side of the field then Florida would have had 4 men to cover the right side from the LOS to the end line against 4 blockers and Ingram with the ball.

Great Discussion on Bama

I wonder if you have thought about doing something similar for us SEC homers on Texas that you did on Bama? Again, I hope this is not taken as a slight against Texas, but I have not had the opportunity to see Texas play this year. I would be interested in some insights into Texas. I have heard that Texas runs a spread offense similar to Utah’s spread. Is that true? What sort of defense does Texas run, 4-4, 4-6? I know that McCoy is your qb, and that Shippley is one of his favorite receivers, and that exhausts my knowledge of Texas Longhorns.

by nosterrex on Dec 25, 2009 10:04 PM CST reply actions

Shame on me.....

…. but I still see Alabama’s OL’s ability to dominate the #1 scoring defense’s front-7 as our biggest challenge. Will Muschamp has put a super defense out there all season, however, I don’t see our front-7 being superior to that of Florida. If they can replicate that effort, then we won’t have many opportunities to score. Alabama will play typical Saban designed field position, TOP-dominated football. I hope I’m wrong.
