Trent Richardson

Can anyone (GOBR?) shed a little light on what happened with our recruiting of Richardson?  I remember hearing and reading that one of the most heralded RB's in the southeast was a big Horns fan growing up.  And I vaguely remember Major Applewhite and/or Muchamp was his contact coach, then nothing.  I don't recall hearing much else after this (which doesn't mean it was not discussed in detail either here or somewhere else, and I simply missed it).  I cannot fathom not making a big push for the #6 overall recruit simply because he was from Florida, not TX.  Was it the promise to Whaley?  Grade issues?  Character?  If it was Whaley, need we even debate the intelligence of that decision?

As I recall a little smoke, not much fire, most attributed it to the Whaley promise.

This is intended to be a general policy comment

I would prefer as a matter of BON recruiting policy not to discuss rumors and speculation about a player’s alleged association with so-called “street agents” unless there is firm evidence. For instance, Reggie Bush — no one is talking, but there is fairly substantial evidence. The Temple running back — no firm evidence, but comments about he and his friends being a “three-ring circus” from someone who covers recruiting extensively are suspcious. Trent Richardson — no firm evidence of which I am aware. Bryce Brown — clear evidence of a handler with dubious intentions.

I feel like this is a matter of respect and a matter of journalistic standards. Any comments about alleged agents or handlers should be couched with those qualifiers, ie clearly expressing that it is a rumor or that it is speculation if there isn’t significant, published evidence. Besides trying to approximate journalistic standards, the other reason is to respect the kids, because they don’t deserve to be the target of spurious rumors of dubious origins.

I hope that doesn’t sound too harsh towards you, jrod, but those are just my personal feelings on the subject when it comes up regarding any players.

plus

i believe whaley might have been told he’d be the only back they’d take.

richardson had a handler

the puzzling issue is Michael? Mack and co backed off after I believe he failed to show up for camps or visits, and didn’t let anyone know, and they just decided to say no thanks, although there might have been other issues. The puzzling thing is that both LSU and OU backed off as well so something must have been going on b/c those schools aren’t afraid of taking character/grade risks.

by ThunderHorn on Dec 29, 2009 11:41 PM CST reply actions

As for Richardson and UT

Taking things at face value, Mack did give Whaley a promise and it’s hard to say how much Richardson really liked Texas — he said that he liked to play as Texas on his NCAA football video games, but that doesn’t necessarily indicate serious interest. I think the odds on a recruitment like that are pretty low, though I don’t recall if there was any talk of visits or if he ever came in for a camp. Perhaps someone else knows.

Trent Richardson, Intelligent Decision

I guess the light is that he chose to go where he would be an asset as a freshman, meaning get some touches. Saban ran Ingram a lot last year behind Coffee and Upchurch. Trent probably saws his opportunity at Bama. He got over 600 yards as a freshman. Florida, I think was his second choice. If he does not get injured he will be in New York and the voting will not be close for Heisman. Trent is the reason it was close for Ingram this year. For what I have seen out of the young man, I would say this about him whether he played for Bama or not. This is totally an unbiased comment about the Heisman. I am sure Muschamp is not at all ignorant about the Richardson threat. I wished he was.

Is there some reason to believe that people have the two confused?

I’m pretty sure people in here know exactly who Bryce Brown and Trent Richardson are. Like GoBR said, there’s not really any confirmation on the rumor of Richardson’s having a handler. With Brown, there’s no speculation that he had a street agent.

by burntorangehorn on Dec 30, 2009 10:32 AM CST up reply actions

I could not find any articles stating TR

ever had a handler. I followed his recruiting pretty heavily last year ( I live about an hour away from Pcola and watched some of his HS games) and can’t even remember there being a rumor stating that. The only thing I could find (google search) was a TX forum stating such. I am not saying every person here is confused but, with some of the comments and RBs being ranked 1 & 2 it SEEMED a couple of posters may have been confused.

It's possible, I guess

But people were talking about the guy in respect to UT’s recruiting approach toward him, and the fact that he listed UT among his teams of interest. I don’t believe Bryce Brown was either recruited by or listed any interest in Texas.

I haven’t heard anything about the handler rumors until this thread, actually. I think some people must’ve found the rumor on that rather unfortunate shaggybevo website.

by burntorangehorn on Dec 30, 2009 11:00 AM CST up reply actions

Richardson had Texas on the list

But yeah, Kirpatrick and UT actually had mutual interest.

I doubt Richardson was seriously interested in UT, and it appears UT wasn’t seriously interested in him, but there was apparently soft contact.

by UTLawGrad on Dec 31, 2009 9:46 AM CST up reply actions

From what I remember it seemed to be mostly offer hunting...

Handler issues aside, I thought the word was that Richardson wanted to be courted but didn’t want to jump through the hoops that Mack sets up to receive an offer. Basically he wasn’t serious enough about getting to Austin in order to get his offer. But that may have been smoke to cover the Whaley promise or the staff’s lack of interest in guys who have the wrong sorts of ‘friends’ helping them with their recruiting.

In the end it is what it is and I seriously doubt Richardson would have even had us on his short list even if we did just send him a blanket offer like so many others do.

Shows what kind of IQ you have

If people in here actually confused the two, they wouldn’t be talking about why UT’s approach to recruiting the guy was so casual. Bryce Brown wasn’t a target at all. Trent Richardson was, even if only a casual one.

But by all means, continue with the indignant attitude.

Contempt for NS

Apologies for the tone

I get a little defensive when we have a player that has done “absolutely everything” on the up and up and then out of nowhere is being accused of having a handler, thunderhorn, after Ghost of Big Roy, pointed out that talking about things that have any substance is ok but just making up rumors on the fly is not. Gracious Host? Burntorangehorn? I have not quite seen those traits as of yet from him. He has been too busy criticizing our coach.

And doesn’t cross the line of incivility. I’m not sure if you actually watched Saban coach the Spartans, but he’s been that guy all along.

With all the sensationalism in the media these days, credible sources are harder to come by. I meant no disrespect to the student-athlete in question.

by jrod23mc on Dec 30, 2009 10:41 PM CST reply actions

Don't feel bad about it.

I should make my feelings about it more explicit and put it somewhere on the web site. You are correct about the value of providing a link — what I’m more concerned about is qualifying such statements. For instance, saying “There are rumors that Richardson had a handler,” then perhaps explaining briefly why it might be possible or some evidence would have been an ideal way to express what you wanted to say.

by Wescott Eberts (GoBR) on Dec 31, 2009 10:32 AM CST up reply actions

I as a Tide Fan

think the situation was handled very well. Thanks BON.
As for VOR, I don’t think you have to be an alumni to say ‘we’ when referring to our teams. I believe that without true fans(whether they did or did not go to the schools) pulling for their teams, watching ball games, going to games, and buying merchandise neither of these two great programs would be where they are today. When I say we, I do feel as part of my team. It might not convey to the field in a huge way but I think the players Know the tradition and Know that average citizens out there are living vicariously (SP) through them and maybe in some form draw from this. Maybe I’m dillusional but that’s how I see it..

'Mark Ingram' is the Heisman Winner!

by rmathis on Dec 31, 2009 10:02 AM CST reply actions

That's fair, I guess

I just refrain from talking trash toward other teams’ fans as though I or they were part of either team. It’s a respect thing for me, as an acknowledgment that these kids are accomplishing something that neither I nor the opposing fans could. At 130-135lbs. coming out of high school, I wouldn’t have been able to start for Rice, let alone Texas, which is why I wouldn’t talk trash to an Owls fan after a UT blowout over Rice, because I had nothing to do with it other than cheering, and neither did the Owls fan.

My in-laws are from Bama so I follow their recruiting

I don’t recall anything negative about TR’s recruiting.

He was putting out some feelers at Texas and the recruiting boards made a few tickler leads to make it seem like there was mutual interest and a breaking story, but I don’t think either side was very seriuos. We all know Texas doesn’t get serious about OOS kids unless they really prove that they are interested in Texas which means they have to do something more than say, hey, can I have an offer.

He’s a great RB and he worries me more than Ingram. To me he was proof that Ingram didn’t deserve the Heisman because he performs about the same—which is good also—but just not Heisman worthy.

The Heisman’s failure to wait until after the bowls is a big mistake. We all saw VY kick Bush’s butt on the field. I can’t wait for McCoy to blow Ingram out of the Rose Bowl.

We love playing in our home away from home. Michigan, USC and now Alabama. Horns vs. Bama: 7-0-1 baby. I will be with my in-laws at a casino in Biloxi to watch it together—should be a lot of fun, although I will be vastly outnumbered by SEC folks I’m afraid. Hopefully some Auburn fans will be there to support me.
