L. Houston vs. G. McCoy
OK, I'll admit that I was a little surprised that only one member of UT's defense made the All Big 12 First Team. I chalked up Houston making the second team to the Big 12 having a few outstanding DTs in Suh and G. McCoy. Then I decided to check Houston and McCoy's stats for the year. Check out what I got....
McCoy:
31 total tackles, 14.5 TFL (66 yards lost), 5 sacks (41 yards lost), 2 PBU, 9 QBH, 1 fumble recovery, 1 FF
Houston:
50 total tackles, 20 TFL (66 yards lost), 7 sacks (46 yards lost), 3 PBU, 3 PD, 26 QBH, 2 fumble recoveries
I don't know about what the rest of you think, but it would appear to me that Houston had better stats this season, plain and simple, than McCoy did. I guess a more recognizable name goes a long way in determining first and second teams.

Ya, it's name recognition
There’s so much in college football that’s decided by vote, and just like an election, it doesn’t hurt to have your name out there. The guys filling out those ballots probably did about 1 hour of work to fill them out, it’s a popularity contest.
Houston will have one thing McCoy doesn’t this year… a championship ring.
yes and no
Stats can be misleading, especially for D-linemen. For instance, would we say that Kindle has had a poor year because his sack totals are down from where they were last year, or where we expected them to be? Maybe, maybe not. Many times, O-lines will have to overcompensate to deal with stud DL’s or DE’s, and while that keeps that player’s numbers down, it allows other players to step up.
Now, I have no problem with Houston being second team, or first team. But I know that McCoy is a beast, and wreaked havoc on our line during the OU game.
So, sometimes those ballots are put together without thought or based on name recognition- I just don’t think this is a good example of that happening.
Houstons facial hair > McCoys as well
Cant be understated.
He also has the most Texan name of a non-Texan that I’ve ever heard of. It would be like meeting Kansk Moscow, a star defender on the Soviet Ice Hockey team, and finding out he was actually from France.

“Colt McCoy” is pretty Texan-sounding too.

Born in NM, so his status is a little murky...
Hank Hill: Fine, everybody’s a Texan. Change planes in Dallas, you’re a Texan.

Colt grew up in Texas
And if your parents bring earth from Texas to the birthing room, chances are you are pretty Texan.
Until Austin Dallas, linebacker and Wisconsin native, makes his first start for the Longhorns, it still stands!

This Austin Dallas of whom you speak will go straight to the world poker tour,
if he knows what’s good for him.

There are three rules that I live by:
never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

robbed
other than earl thomas, i feel like houston has had the biggest impact for our defense this year constantly getting pressure on the quarterback and stuffing the run. and since our D is better the OU’s…
