Not sure you can blame it all on GD. With no oline, there isn’t much you can do.

Those guys should be frickin’ embarassed letting the Colt just get hammered back there. Eight sacks?

No one is that good that you can't slow them down with a decent double team...

It was an embarrassment. They need to do exactly the opposite they have been doing with this offensive line this season because it isn’t working. They have been terrible all season but today was an all time low.

by cj43 on Dec 5, 2009 10:47 PM CST up reply actions

Colt had time

for the normal routes the WR’s run, but they were blanketed. The fact that we didnt establish the run game when it was working is as much to blame for the hits on Colt…But the O-line was shit tonight and much of the regular season.

So sick of listening to TCU crap

I live in the FW area, so tired of the Startlegram homerism.

Listen, you got a problem? Talk your conference into HAVING A CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. That way, you could try and prove your point on the field tonight, instead of just sitting around like vultures waiting for active teams to lose.

As Texas fans, these Big12 Titles do NOT come easily, we need to sit back and truly appreciate this! Meh

blind positivism always sounds noble, but I see it as thoughtless and stubborn.

The truth is we pay an OC (with whom hundreds of talented coaches would gladly switch places) a lot of money to gameplan, and after 9 days of preparation, I saw nothing tonight that indicates he watched any film on Nebraska whatsoever – no exploited tendencies, no scheming for Nebraska’s weaknesses, etc.. And then in four hours of gameplay, I saw no significant adjustments.

“Give Nebraska credit, blah blah blah…” Every coach that has faced NU this year had to deal with the same front four that we did, and most of them did a better job, and all of them with less talent on the field, and all of them earning less money. I’m sick of watching these offensive coaches.

Your optimism does nothing to invalidate these points.

by BrooklynHorn on Dec 5, 2009 11:53 PM CST up reply actions

I actually like our chances against Bama

I just think people often brainwash themselves into optimism at the expense of truth and intellect.

There was very little that looked good tonight, and from the play-calling to the offensive scheming to clock management, there’s a lot to be answered for. These coaches didn’t seem to be prepared at all, and we need to inquire as to why that is. The problem is that because we squeaked out a one point victory, there is a percentage of this community that will essentially now overlook all of those things, which, to my mind, is irrational.

Elation is no justification to ignore actuality, simply because you’re currently buzzed on the chemical rewards from your brain.

by BrooklynHorn on Dec 6, 2009 12:25 AM CST up reply actions

Reason need not be the motivator in every human behavior.

If we had won tonight by 21+ and went on to lose in pasadena, we would still end up without a MNC. If we had won tonight by 21+ and went on to win in pasadena, we would get a MNC. So clearly our possible outcomes are the same even though we won by a field goal at the last second.

This community has no responsibility to dwell on all of the problems from tonight’s victory. We will to the extent that it entertains us and stimulates us over the next month, but that will have no impact on how prepared our team is to win.

That’s on the coaches and players. Let them fix the issues and let us celebrate a Big XII title and a chance to play for a MNC.

by hornalum08 on Dec 6, 2009 12:38 AM CST up reply actions

I disagree with the title of your post

but still, its not prudent to ignore problems that can be fixed simply because we feel good tonight. The two have very little to do with one another. Enjoy your emotions, but don’t let them colonize the domain of reason. That is where we get into trouble.

by BrooklynHorn on Dec 6, 2009 1:20 AM CST up reply actions

I certainly see you points BH

And I was upset with the offensive scheming too. But at 12:37am after a win like that I don’t have to pull out my critical thinking skills and analyze it. I was just drained and actually sickened over some of the negative posts in the game thread and the nature of the comments. I am not blindly positive, but in the heat of the moment during the game and the surreal nature of the immediate aftermath, I don’t have to be completely coldly rational either. Some people need to get a grip on the game threads… what you saw in the posts above was a simple natural reaction to that.

I don't want to get into this

But you have to look at the whole season, not one game

"I don't ever miss free throws. I'm like 100-percent from the free throw line. I just don't think about missing and if you think about missing you're going to miss. I just take my time and know I'm going to make it and I do," McClellan said.

by blazzinken on Dec 5, 2009 10:52 PM CST up reply actions

Hate to say it, but I doubt that was what you were saying last year when you got passed by 0U on the basis of the whole season, rather than one game.

by HawkeyedFrog on Dec 5, 2009 11:14 PM CST up reply actions

Logical Fallacies...

Hate to say it, but when it comes to comparing two teams that have played each other, you have to take the head to head outcome, not the season. Last year UT beat OU on a neutral field. This year UT and TCU have not played each other. If TCU had beat UT then you would have an argument, but, for now, you’re completely wrong.

by mcmccaleb on Dec 5, 2009 11:30 PM CST up reply actions

TCU blew out BYU at BYU.
BYU beat 0U on a neutral field without their starting RB.
Texas beat 0U on a neutral field.

Follow the logic, friend Orangeblood.

by HawkeyedFrog on Dec 5, 2009 11:47 PM CST up reply actions

if the transference thing...

even halfway worked in college football, then you’d have a point.

Unfortunately, it does not, and never has.

Hey, I don’t wish anything bad for TCU, and to be honest, if we had even a halfway coherent way of determining a champion, they’d have a chance to win it. I feel for you – no team has been screwed as royally as Texas by the BCS system through its years. But to take our worst game against a better team than TCU played all year long, and decide that somehow that makes you better is beyond foolish. Truth is, Texas is probably better, but we will never know. It’s a pretty stupid system, and when some bozo tells you that “every game is a playoff” you can ask him which playoff game you lost.

At the end of the day, other than starting higher in the polls and being a bigger name, there’s not a real reason to argue that Texas somehow deserves this and TCU does not. But there’s also no reason at all to argue that TCU deserves it and Texas does not. If we played each other, I truly believe we’d win, and probably a little more handily than you think possible, but again, neither of us knows and we never will… unfortunately.

by Pflash on Dec 5, 2009 11:56 PM CST up reply actions

Last year

Texas beat OU
OU beat Tech
Tech beat Texas

Where’s the logic in that??

by ElMariachiLoco on Dec 6, 2009 12:03 AM CST up reply actions

Logic?

If you wanted to stump me, you should’ve pulled the 2008 Tech card…

All I was saying is that since we don’t have a head to head matchup, much less one on a neutral field, we have no definitive proof that either TCU or UT is better. Also, I was pointing out that last year was a completely different situation (therein lies your fallacy).

Your logic this time makes little sense, as we all know the transitive property doesn’t work in college football (see A&M).

Win your bowl game and with all your returning starters next year you’ll have a great shot at it all and not have to fight the system like this year.

but I just don’t…
This BCS system is corrupt at its very core, and even if TCU wins, it would take a miracle for them to get to the championship next year. And I want to make clear that I do not in the least mean that they wouldn’t deserve it – heck, why don’t they deserve it this year??? But I just don’t believe it will happen. If any two teams from a major conference make it through either unscathed or with early loss and impressive late wins, they’ll jump the Frogs. It’s not right, but it’s the system…

OU had such a huge lead as the only unbeaten and with a tougher schedule by far than either of the 1-loss teams. That was never in question. Florida’s lead on Texas was nowhere near that significant, and TCU/Cincy are not passing Texas without a Texas loss.

My advice is this: Stop whining about being left out and start working/campaigning/etc. to get BCS recognition for the Mountain West Conference. TCU didn’t get the invite to join the Big 12. We are all so sorry. I couldn’t believe it, either. But it happened. Work to change the system.

Then when you go undefeated, there isn’t an issue. You are in the mix. Otherwise, we are tired of hearing it. We are NOT the problem.

I am not saying Texas is the problem

I am not whining that TCU should be number 2. The fact is the system sucks and undefeated TCU, Boise, and Cincy will be left of a chance to prove IF they are good enough to win/compete for a BCS title.

It was correct..

Been a ref for 24 years at all levels and it was the correct call. Not sure what McCoy was thinking on that play or what phantom “15 seconds on the clock” he mentioned after the game, but it doesn’t matter. Kick out of bounds and horse collar were killers for NU. By the way, the horse collar call was also correct call. Interesting that UT got it taken away from them last year on the last play of a game and took it this year on the last play of this game. Suh for heisman!

TCU

Too bad they will not get a chance to play for the title. They are as good as Texas and ’Bama. I like Texas but wished they would have lost for them to get a shot. TCU had only 2 close games all year one over ACC runner up Clemson and then Air Force in a very bad weather game.

by learned hand on Dec 5, 2009 11:33 PM CST up reply actions

The fact Texas struggled on offense

is a reflection on Texas talent as much as the coaching staff. They couldn’t run the ball most of the year and the O-line has struggled against good D-lines. This had some similarities to the Oklahoma game.

by DoubleB on Dec 5, 2009 11:36 PM CST up reply actions

Yes and no

I am pissed at the offense right now, and would love to blame GD. If we had lost, I would probably be more supportive, just because of the nuclear melt down that would be happening with this board. My issue with the offense is more with the o line, as I don’t think there were any good plays to call if your offense plays that bad.
The other thing is look at Florida, who has IMO the best offensive mind in the college game, and only scored 13 tonight. I tend to look at the season trends and not specific games because I think everyone has bad games. For example how many people who were saying they wanted Gus Malzahn six weeks in still want him?

by Wells on Dec 5, 2009 11:42 PM CST up reply actions

After watching the last drive

GD and Mack need to answer for the time management at the end, that was horrible.

by Wells on Dec 5, 2009 11:52 PM CST up reply actions

I have found myself lately in the middle ground on Davis

Ultimately, I find culpability moreso under the Parcells “buy the groceries” theory than play calling. He has a definite offense he wants to run, but the personnel don’t fit and rarely seem to. I agree with you and DoubleB that the offensive line is the root of the problem, as it usually is at UT, but it has been the weakest part of the offense since 2007, and really, for much of the decade.

I share your assessment on Meyer and he got housed tonight. Sometimes you show up to a gunfight hungover, and this time Florida did. Saban is a witch. I mean that literally. He has the power to destroy football teams from Florida. Like the Dolphins.

Also, I still like what Malzahn has done, but that’s as much because AU had so little to work with. I’ll give him an incomplete.

proud to swim home

by learned hand on Dec 5, 2009 11:55 PM CST up reply actions

Actually I am middle ground on Davis as well

I would rather have a great mind in there, but how many teams really have that?

Very different players for very different systems. And both are freaky good for what they are assigned to do.

Suh had 12 tackles of which 7 were for loss PLUS 4 sacks. Animal.

All of my friends are hating on the Horns right now.

Amazing. Well whenever Florida or Alabama barely get by they get credited for “toughing it out” or “finding a way to win” by the fans and media. When Texas does it it’s considered “unimpressive” (see last year’s Fiesta Bowl and tonight’s game). Whatever. We’re on our way to Pasadena with a shot to win ANOTHER title. TCU and Cincy would kill to be in that spot. Chris Fowler can kiss my ass.

The difference is that they believe the SEC to be a strong conference. The Big 12 has not lived up to expectations. But they should give the Nebraska defense the credit it deserves. Pelini has really built a solid unit. Nebraska’s D could hold their own with any BCS team.

Kirk sucked

Buckner sucked (that last interception that very nearly cost us the game was all on him—he’s amazingly weak and soft for such a big guy), and Goodwin sucked. Not a great day for the WR core.

4th Quarter Field Position

“Marquise Goodwin slipped on the ensuing kickoff, which meant Texas started its drive at its own 1-yard line.”

Officials, broadcasters and seemingly everyone missed this call … Marquise did not have possession of the ball when it first bounced off of him. He got up and, standing up, he picked up the ball to begin his return.

Why isn’t there any outrage over the “quick whistle”?

by TXStampede on Dec 5, 2009 11:35 PM CST reply actions

Question on the replay at the end

The call was correct — when there have been replays like that in football before (as well as basketball), the clock is always reset to the exact moment the clock should have been stopped.

But this has always been one thing about replay I haven’t liked. It doesn’t mimic what happens on a regular play in the middle of the game. If that pass had hit the ground with 10:01 left, instead of :01, there’s no doubt that there would have been no more than 10:00, if not less, on the clock, given the usual lag time between the ball hitting the ground, the ref blowing the whistle and the clock operator hearing the whistle and stopping the clock.

It will happen many times during the college basketball season (with a replay rule I believe would be the same here), where the clock will be reset to the exact moment a player steps out of bounds, for example, rather than when the clock operator would have stopped the clock after hearing the whistle of the ref.

But since this (correctly called) inconsistency saved us, I won’t complain too much. :)

by Hopkins Horn on Dec 5, 2009 11:35 PM CST reply actions

Excellent point

and I agree with it. Why it’s more important at the end of the game than the middle is ludicrous. Their should be some consistency there.

by DoubleB on Dec 5, 2009 11:37 PM CST up reply actions

Clock management is part of the game in the last minutes of the half and 4th qtr.

Sort of like ball placement after a huge gain is not reviewed most of the time to spot the ball. Measurements are reviewed when inches make or break a drive.

by blazzinken on Dec 5, 2009 11:38 PM CST up reply actions

There would still be the split-second lag time . . .

. . . between when a play is over and when the ref recognizes it and blows the whistle. Replay, i believe, still wouldn’t compensate for that lag for a consistent result.

by Hopkins Horn on Dec 5, 2009 11:49 PM CST up reply actions

That sounds good in theory

but that would be a better fit for basketball than football, a running play for example means the clock continues to run after the ref has blown his whistle

defensive scheme. A scheme that worked for OU as well. If you can get pressure with 4 and jam the recievers to take away the short pass, you can slow our offense.

We helped them out with bad decisions, penalties, and mistakes…. but they did exactly what they wanted to do and knocked us off what we wanted to do. Credit to them for that.

And we did not seem to adjust at all at the half.

We are giving way too much credit to Suh..

Yes he is good and had a great game but our oline make him look even better. The oline was just flat pitiful tonight. They have been an embarrassment all season and have done nothing but get worse thru the course of this season. There is no reason why a couple decent college oline men double teaming him shouldn’t be able to slow him down. Unfortunately, our oline stunk up the place tonight.

Iam not debating that Suh isn't good...

What I am debating is using our oline has a measuring stick to ascertain how good a defensive lineman he is. Our oline hasn’t been able to block anybody all season. They can’t pick up the blitz, they can’t block anybody 1on1 and they can’t double team anyone. They are completely lost out there.

Just got back from the game ...

… it was freakin’ torture. Looking around at the crowd, all the Horns fans looked pissed/sick pretty much the entire game.

The defense was stellar. No two ways about it.

The offense did not execute. But then again, the offense really didn’t have many opportunities to execute. The playcalling may be a new all-time low for Greg Davis. I am shocked that some of his apologists have already shown up on this thread. His total lack of adjustments til the fourth quarter, continuing to try and run through Suh, failing to pass over the middle much of the game even though it was working … I could go on and on.

Several flat-out bizarre calls by the officiating crew did not help … looking forward to some quality Tivo time to try and figure those out.

That said, the defense was fantastic. Hunter was nails, as per usual.

And how fantastic to put together a loss-free season, despite the handicap calling the plays.

As mentioned before. NU pulled an OU on Defense and took away all the things Texas likes to do.

Uh-oh

Potential controversy?

As posted on CornNation:

Reviewable plays under the Big XII rules include clock adjustment when a ruling on the field is reversed (emphasis mine — quoting Article 3f of Big XII replay rules).

Can someone else look at the rules here and see if there is a provision for adjusting the clock with no other issue at hand?

by Hopkins Horn on Dec 6, 2009 12:08 AM CST reply actions

Instant replay’s purpose should be to get the right call on the field. They got the call right due to replay.

by JohnsonUT on Dec 6, 2009 12:14 AM CST up reply actions

Of course that's the purpose of replay . . .

. . . but replay is only authorized in specifically-defined situations. Just ask the Cowboys, who had a very clear fumble recovery in the Packers game last month denied because the specific play at hand was not reviewable.

From the NCAA rulebook

ARTICLE 6. No other plays or officiating decisions are reviewable.
However, the replay official may correct egregious errors, including those
involving the game clock, whether or not a play is reviewable. This excludes
fouls that are not specifically reviewable (Reviewable fouls: Rules 12-3-2-c
and d, 12-3-4-b and 12-3-5-a).

All I can say is, "Thank God"

Its a miracle that we have won this game. Give Neb. credit. They come to play but definitely, we were not. We were greatly underestimate them especially, their D. If we play like this against Bama, I rather have Cincy & TCU to play MNC.

Regardless, Congrat to Colt & all the seniors got their 1st Big 12 title. Hope MB can make the adjustment to prepare for Bama. One thing for sure is, we need more prayers than ever for this MNC game.

Anyway, I will try my best to forget about this game and focus on how VY will beat Peyton Manning on tomorrow.

Right now Bama is probly two TDs better than y’all. Y’all have played two decent defenses all year and scored 16 and 13 points respectively. Saban has a month to figure out how to put pressure on Mccoy. Bama will run at you all game much like A&M did and tire your defense out. Unless Bama has a bunch of atletes talk to agents or get arrested, I like their chances.

I think your win put us in the Indy bowl vs UGA. Good for me bc I can do some gambling and see the Ags play again. Good for the team cuz we get an extra month of practice and a game vs athletes similar to what y’all and OU have.

Muschamp has a month too

6 hours ago people said we were 2 touchdowns better than Nebraska. Just saying.

"I don't ever miss free throws. I'm like 100-percent from the free throw line. I just don't think about missing and if you think about missing you're going to miss. I just take my time and know I'm going to make it and I do," McClellan said.

Just dropping in to say congrats for getting it done against us….again. You guys have an excellent defense and a very good offense as well (it looks like they were a little off tonight, but most teams look bad against the Blackshirts). As much as I’d have loved to win this one, I’ll be pulling for you guys against Bama.

That was probably the worst endgame I’ve ever seen that actually worked. Seriously, why the hell would you drop back to pass three plays in a row when you’re already in FG range and have taken an absurd number of sacks already? And why would you run a slow-developing bootleg with that little time left?

That said, it did somehow work. The fact that only two teams get to play for the title and three unbeatens are going to be left playing for consolation prizes without any chance to earn the title is absurd. But I think this time you’re not going to be among the teams screwed over by the system.

by SpartanDan on Dec 6, 2009 12:40 AM CST reply actions

whether it works out or not,

the “system” is absurd. no matter what happens in the BCS champeenship, other teams will have rightful claims as the nation’s best. It’s rubbish and if the Horns weren’t always in the conversation, I wouldn’t pay any attention.

by zamm on Dec 6, 2009 12:53 AM CST up reply actions

No argument here.

I will say that the BCS usually picks the “right” two teams under the constraint that you assume there are two and only two deserving teams. But that assumption is nearly always wrong.

TCU

Nobody knows better than Texas fans what it’s like to feel like you got robbed of a shot at a national title by a system that is full of flaws. But I believe TCU is only the 4th or 5th most deserving team to play for the national title this year.

I’m completely fine with a non-AQ playing for the title in a year where that team has a better resume than the two best teams that the BCS conferences can produce. But that is not the case this year. There are three undefeated conference champions from the BCS conferences, and TCU does not deserve to play for the BCS national title over any of those three teams.

This is like in 2005 when Reggie Bush won the Heisman, and Texas fans were livid. Everyone said “In any other year, Vince wins it.” The same applies here. TCU needed 2 of the top 3 teams to lose, and that did not happen. That doesn’t make this “unfair” to TCU. It just means two great teams had perfect seasons. Unfair is Cincy not getting their shot. Unfair would’ve been TCU getting in over Texas.

Everyone loves an underdog, and everyone wants to see the BCS turned into a laughingstock. I get that. But you can’t bitch and moan about fairness when there are three undefeated teams from better conferences. In the words of Darrell Royal, what should’ve happened, did.

by bassale47 on Dec 6, 2009 9:24 AM CST reply actions

One quibble

It absolutely is unfair that TCU and Boise aren’t getting chances. In no other major sport, anywhere, can you win all of your games for an entire season and not be the champion.

But if you’re going to pick two and only two teams, it’s got to be Bama and Texas.
