Let's Get Something Straight...
This Texas team is not the 2005 version of the National Champion Texas Longhorns.
Plain and simple, this team is not the one that defied all odds and won the National Title with the greatest college QB of all time (opinion injected, obviously).
Let's look at the 2009 Texas Longhorns for what they are: the 2009 Texas Longhorns. The '09 version doesn't have the explosive offensive capabilities that came with having Vince Young, Jamaal Charles, Ramonce Taylor, Limas Sweed and Co. This year does, however, have arguably the best defense Texas has ever seen. Perhaps a better overall special teams. And a better overall coaching staff.
But here's the problem: It seems that we as a collective group of Texas fans seem to think that because we're going back to the Rose Bowl that we're automatically going to repeat and overcome the same underdog mentality that the '05 team overcame against a tough opponent. Just because they did it doesn't mean that Colt, Shipley & Co. will.
So let's be objective here. Let's look at this season, this team, this year's opponent, and not the 2005 versions. Let's focus on the 2010 National Championship Game on January 7, 2010. Not January 4, 2006.
Here's to rolling the Tide and bringing another Crystal Ball back to Austin with a new group of champions. Hook 'Em.

Exactly
We’re certainly better than Auburn and Tennessee, and those teams held their own against the Tide. Alabama is not unbeatable, and I still think we’ll be the best defense they’ve faced this year. I see no reason to think we don’t have an excellent chance of hoisting the trophy.

I like to focus on hoping we will win
and hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. I also hope our coaches are thinking objectively about how to defeat Alabama. I doubt my opinion would ever make its way to Mack.
But I do think your post is a good warning to some of us. It seems so similar to 2005, a lot of us including myself almost expect Texas to win “just because”. We need to be prepared, as fans, for a win or a loss. And if we lose, to handle it well enough to not physically hurt ourselves or damage anything in our houses or apartments. I broke my hand inadvertently after a rockets game one time doing a fist pump to close to the door jamb. Lesson learned….I hope!
Although I think I’d trade another minor hand fracture for a win in the Rose Bowl.
You know what they say about hope
Hope in one hand and crap in another and see which one fills up first. I reside in the realm of logic and facts. Being positive gets you so far but we need to recognize that we have many shortcomings at this point, offensive play calling and balance at or near the top.

Coaching
Say what you will about the offensive coaching, but there isn’t a single coaching team that I would rather have prepping the Longhorns for this bowl game. When Mack and his team have a month to game plan, there is no finer coaching staff in the country.
Say what you will, but I have to feel that our hearts are in good hands….
I agree that the Texas staff in general is top tier
However, Greg Davis isn’t doing it any favors. The last time we played in a MNC game he came up with a wonderful game plan and for whatever short comings it did have Vince more than made up for. However, we can’t have an offensive output against Alabama like we did against Nebraska. This is what I will argue with Greg Davis, he is not consistent. He will sometimes come up with masterful game plans and wow all of us and make us believers again and then other times he will absolutely lay an egg. Consistency breeds excellence. Our offensive output is not consistent.

'course, having the OL get destroyed play after play after play
has a way of spoiling a game plan
Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.
I agree that the OL was getting beat up
But as I alluded before Greg Davis wasn’t doing them any favors by passing 80% of the time. When Suh knows he can rush the QB without having to worry about the threat of the run it makes for a different game. We might as well have just told him the snap count. Look at the different between the Nebraska game plan and the one for A&M. I understand both teams are different but we ran the ball very little and therefore had very few play actions to help slow Suh down.
