Nelson May Visit Texas, Davis Will ($)
For the first time, there is actual smoke surrounding the fire -- after weeks of rumors about Skyline receiver Mike Davis, who is committed to LSU, visiting Texas, it now appears that may happen. ESPN's Gerry Hamilton is reporting that Davis will take an official visit to Austin next weekend. With all the wide receiver commits in the class and the outstanding offer to Darius White, whose interest in Texas appears to be renewed, it doesn't seem like the Longhorns have much room for Davis or even really need another receiver that much, even if it's the talented White. If Davis really is interested in Texas and thinking about de-committing from LSU, the coaching staff may have to decide if they would take Davis and basically lose any shot with White -- in other words, make a decision between the two.
Though Davis' visit is set, there is another player committed to another school who may visit -- another Skyline player, linebacker Corey Nelson, set to become an Aggie. According to Nelson, the visit is not set, but he is considering making the trip. Considering that he still signs his text messages to recruiting services "Mr. A&M," its hard to say whether his commitment to A&M should be considered a "soft" verbal at this point or if he just wants to take advantage of the ability to travel that taking official visits provides.

would be great to steal Nelson just for the A&M reaction
but I hear very good things about Hicks from tOSU insiders.
I think White is talented enough that he has to be waited on.
Funny how former recruiting targets who apparently lost Mack Brown's cell phone number
have found it as Texas keeps winning while the LSUs and A&Ms and OUs of the world suffer defeats.
Mack’s recruiting may already be over budget. He’s gonna have to find a way to “lose” four players with eligibility remaining BEFORE the current list of 2010 commitments can fit the 85-scholarship limit.
Two or three more commits raises the possibly “forced attrition” total to six or seven. Gonna be interesting.
Regardless, it's always nice to draw more attention from any recruits.
Whether or not they commit to us, I hope they have a good time in Austin.
I don't know if anything will come of it
but I’d honestly be surprised to get either one. For on at WR there is such a log jam and secondly I just don’t ever remember Nelson being that warm with Texas. He seemed very generic in his statements and mentioned other schools as well. Right now it sounds more like buyers remorse and a ringing endorsement.

than* a ringing endorsement.

Mr. A&M - that's funny
You have to be kidding me that we would waste time or money on a recruit that signs an e-mail like that. Sounds about as dumb as the kid that wore the USC gear while visiting UCLA for his recruiting trip.
Jeffcoat, Hicks, and White are all we need to put the cherry on top of this stellar class.
Mike Davis is an interesting development, and it may be that the departure of Larry Porter (head LSU recruiter) is part of Davis’ concern.
On other recruiting news it was funny to read that Auburn did get some NCAA sanctions for their big cat weekend. Mr. LSU seemed to take it in stride.
I wonder how much this has to do with the ongoing NCAA investigation...
into LSU’s X receivers coach paying for JUCO d-linemen Hicks last year…hmmm could be a lot of recruits looking for a new home.

My Aggie connections
Think that Davis is very strong possibility for Texas. They are not overly worried about Nelson as he has stayed in touch and is strong Aggie. Apparently Davis has been trying to get Nelson to come to Texas……Davis must be pretty serious about checking us out.
Blaine Irby
Totally unrelated but anybody heard anything about Irby’s progress?

No word.
But given the nature of the injury, it would probably be a minor miracle if he ever steps foot on the field for Texas again.

So not that it'd be a good thing, but that could account for one open spot

Would it be an open spot?
I seem to remember reading that they are honoring his scholarship regardless or playing status. If true, does this count against the scholarship limit or does it become an “academic” scholarship?
I know that Irby’s scholarship will be honored even if he doesn’t play (I’m glad Mack does this). Does it still count towards our scholarship limit?
No, it wouldn't count
Just as with the incoming player who ended up having an injury or congenital defect come out that prevented him from ever stepping on the field for UT, Irby wouldn’t count against the scholarship unit if he weren’t on the roster.

Matt Nadar - OL
And this is correct. When this happened to Matt I remember reading that his scholarship does not count toward the 85 total.
Correct, they do not count toward limit if they go on medical/injury status since they are off the roster
We are lucky to have the cash to do this for injured players. I’m sure all schools would like to do this, some just cannot afford to do this every time.
Ahh ok
Kinda like being on workman’s comp then I suppose.
Among the other players in the last few years
who had to give up football due to injury: TE Josh Marshall, RB Albert Hardy, DB Ishie Oduegwu.
They don’t count against the scholarship limit. They continue to get the same benefits they got while on athletic scholarship.
TE Ian Harris on the current squad may have to go that route.
O line?
What are we doing to get some better attempted chop-blockers on the line next year?

Also brought in four this year
Thomas Ashcraft, Paden Kelley, Garrett Porter and Mason Walters. All highly regarded and still on the roster, knock on wood.

Hurry up and get ready Mason Walters
I like Nelson. Have heard good things about him from friends in HS coaching. Would be great to grab him, but Hicks is the prize. Gotta get that kid.
