McCoy was named a finalist for the award on Monday, along with Stanford's Toby Gerhart, Alabama's Mark Ingram, Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh and Florida's Tim Tebow.

Should McCoy win
the media bash would magnify substantially. And I don’t care, regardless of who I would vote for.

Omigosh...how COULD it?!?!
Are we really gonna have to put up with this for a whole month?! I’m already pissed as hell. Thank goodness for BON…
41-38 !!
Thanks, AS
I’d vote Suh.
You wonder how much Saturday’s games impacted Tebow and McCoy (down) and Ingram (up). I think Colt is second or first, Ingram being the top contender along with McCoy.
Big 12/Midlands vote will be split, and southeast may be. Nobody from the Big East/Big Ten areas.
Because he’s the 2nd coming. His benevolence is why these other players even stand a chance. He didn’t lose. It was his will that Bama won. He willed the other team to victory.
hahahaha
Funny thing is… people dont say it like that, but they mean it EXACTLY like that!

And I don’t understand why Tebow was even invited
I don’t either, other than for TV ratings on Saturday.
It’s wishful thinking, but maybe he’ll siphon off some SEC votes.
It’s the reason they invited 5 this year instead of 3. Tebow was probably 5th, but they still needed to invite the second coming, so they decided to invite all the way to 5th. I don’t understand the appeal, but then again, I’m not a Florida fan…

Suh had the most impressive game I've seen this season
But he plays DT for a 9-4 team that was rarely on primetime television. I’m afraid he doesn’t have much of a chance, which is unfortunate.
Of course he has no chance
Only way a DE or DT could win would be off an undefeated BCS team on which that player (as opposed to a RB or QB) was the big name. Tough combination to come up with.
Heisman voters should know better, but they vote best skill player on best team. As close as they can come to filling that description. Three QBs topped last year’s list. NOBODY at ANY OTHER position was among the best three in the country? Come on. No defensive player has ever won (correct? I could be wrong.)
Charles Woodson?
Correct me if I’m wrong. I didn’t look it up, but I seem to remember him winning.
Woodson won because he returned like 12 punts/kickoffs for TDs.
Hang 'em!!!

Woodson won
but he got a chance to play a little bit of offense to help his cause
and special teams
Return TDs really pushed him over… didnt he win the heisman instead of Peyton Manning?
"Texas Till I Die"
Yes, and I still enjoy the angst it generated in fans of the other UT
Woodson was also one of the most dynamic defensive players of the decade. I liked the pick.
proud to swim home
And over Randy Moss
Unbelievable
It's a Horns' world. Even Aggies play hoops with a burnt orange ball.
Being kicked off two football teams ruined Moss' chances.
And caused him to fall precipitously in the draft.
Somehow, I don’t think he lets it bother him
proud to swim home
The heisman is becoming like a hallmark card holiday
Contrived.
How many past winners have gone on to greatness at the next level? NC rings? NFL SB rings? Even just staying out of obscurity? The number is diminishing, and it’s because the media take control of the voting and do not focus on real greatness.
All these players have had great moments. Suh is suddenly on everyone’s lips because of his outstanding showing Saturday night. But be honest, before that, I hardly heard TWO words about him on this site. So anyone who is suddenly putting him at the top is just doing what all the media and voters do: look at the last game.
It’s all stuff to fill up a sports website and sell space anymore.
I’m much more excited about seeing two old bloods going at it in a month.
I couldn't care much less about what Heisman winners do in the NFL
I fully reject the notion that a player’s NFL success or NFL potential should have any bearing at all on the same player’s college legacy. Tommie Frazier was a million times better college football player than Tom Brady ever dreamed of being, for example.

Ok, you're right
but my point is that this award is so overhyped that it’s become more about the marketability of the candidate, than the actual meaning behind the award. There are great candidates out there, including Suh, Ingram, et al, that deserve consideration but the media pick who their darling is and go with that. I think it’s a waste of time anymore.
Btw, despite Dime’s great coverage of Suh and anything else football-related, here’s what ESPN has for last week for Suh: http://espn.go.com/college-football/heisman09/index
I did not read every single post or comment about this guy all season long. I haven heard much about him, because I have a life outside of watching football. McCoy I’ve heard about. Tebow I’ve heard about. Ingram I’ve heard about. I’m not in the mode of digging into all the details of sports on a daily basis to learn about all the stats on all the players in FBS. Suh had a great game on Saturday. Before that, I barely knew he existed. Sorry I’m a football moron, Screwface.
You should probably pay attention to college football if you haven’t heard anything about Ndamukong Suh before saturday. He’s the best college defensive lineman since Reggie White. He’s been touted all year and has been getting Heismen buzz since the first week in October when Mel Kiper started raving about him.
Hang 'em!!!

Best since White?
Not sure about that. Guys like Sapp might be in the discussion there.
by burntorangehorn on Dec 7, 2009 9:29 PM CST up reply actions
Sapp also didn’t have the lack of offensive production that kept the defense on the field.
Hang 'em!!!
by Screwface on Dec 8, 2009 12:11 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Best since White
The first and only time i heard that comparison was during the broadcast of saturday’s game.
Dime mentioned Suh about every day during the daily round up for about a month
I thought she’d given up her favoritism for defensive backs.
proud to swim home
Let Alabama have the Heisman
We will take the crystal.

Agreed
Its the curse of the heisman…this is reminding me of 2005 when we were doubted, and everybody thought we would get steamrolled…only difference is championship game if you can call it that in 2005 wasnt even close and a man named Vince Young. I think we can pull it off with colt though our defense is better than everyone thinks. Someone please tell GD to run the ball and call some plays that might actually work..
While most are dreaming of success, winners wake up and work hard to achieve it.
Spiller got jobbed...
If they are letting players in on teams without a perfect record how can he not be there?
JD’s like, "you want some fucking pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, bitches!"- RCCook
Because he had 1500 yards (rushing and receiving) and 15 tds total
And entering last week ~900 yards and 7 TDs with 3 100 yard rushing games. I know he’s an exciting player but he was by no means jobbed
Less impressive than that Jamaal Charles guy people were complaining about last week
proud to swim home
Odd how people crap on Charles for a small number of fumbles...
…yet forgive plays that equal impact (interceptions) when it comes to quarterbacks.
by burntorangehorn on Dec 7, 2009 6:45 PM CST up reply actions
its the Ratio:
If your QB throws 10 picks in a season, its acceptable from a stats perspective
If a RB loses 10 fumbles in a season he has a serious case of Fumble-itis.
"Texas Till I Die"
Why is it acceptable?
Look at Jamaal Charles’ fumbles from scrimmage ratio in the NFL. It’s lower compared to his number of carries than Peyton Manning’s ratio of picks to pass attempts, last I checked. In fact, I think Manning’s INT:attempt ratio is about three times Jamaal’s FFS:carry ratio.
by burntorangehorn on Dec 7, 2009 7:07 PM CST up reply actions
Just a thought here...
but isn’t it easier to hold onto a football than to throw the football against an NFL secondary?
Texas Swagger
I don't know why it would be
Think about how much contact is involved. And today, defenders are trying to strip the ball every play.
The point, though, is that it’s ridiculous to jump on a guy for fumbles that can be counted on one, or at most two, hands, while a QB gets a pass for 10-15 interceptions.
by burntorangehorn on Dec 7, 2009 7:14 PM CST up reply actions
I think that's a terrible comparison
When you’re running the football, it’s already in your hands and you have to lose it for it to be a fumble…
While when you’re throwing it in the air, you’re intentionally releasing the football, often towards your opponents. Half the work is already done.
In fact, I would think that QB’s are even more likely to fumble the ball on carries, because they’re often trying to scramble/make plays.
Stick with apples to apples, and compare Charles’ fumble ratio against other backs, and not apples to oranges.
But again
The result is the same. A fumble usually is no more harmful to a team than an interception is.

Toby Gerhardt was a better running back this year than Ingram. Plus Alabama’s o-line is far superior to Stanford’s.
Hang 'em!!!
by Screwface on Dec 8, 2009 12:15 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
the guy that runs this website says usually once they get 200 votes.....
he’ll lock in his prediction
Tebow distant 5th, 1-4 pretty close
1. Gerhardt
2. N Suh (wow, most 1st place votes so far!!)
3. Ingram
4. McCoy
SO CONFUSED!!
Im like when a kid walks in on his parents “wrestling” naked – what to think??
I want McCoy to win because I love the guy – He is one of the best Texas QBs IMO
BUT
I dont think he deserves it more than some of the other guys, even CJ Spiller who didnt get invited…
Do I want my guy to win and take the backlash and be Ingrams “reggie bush” media angle?? HELL NO
"Texas Till I Die"
Love McCoy
But he doesnt deserve it this year. Last year he did, and it didnt go his way.
This year it should be Suh or Gerhart. Those two dominate their games unlike anyone else invited.
by BoddickerIsClutch on Dec 7, 2009 6:16 PM CST reply actions
True
and its really an honor to be a 2 time finalist. I imagine Colt cares more about the Crystal football than the bronze guy on one leg
"Texas Till I Die"
ESPN: "Texas QB McCoy leads finalists for Heisman"
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4723007
But they don’t give a ton of good reasons for the headline.
Honestly I think it'd be an amazing statement for Colt to skip the ceremony
Show that the team is bigger than the Heisman by holding a well-publicized team meeting/session with his offense—DURING the ceremony.
wow
that would be pretty huge… To bad he will never get the chance
plus its just too much PR for the program for the administrators to let him skip it
"Texas Till I Die"
I think it'd be an even better PR move to hold such a meeting/practice
Think of the headlines about a guy snubbing a Heisman ceremony invitation to do an after-dark walkthrough, practice, etc. Or even better, take the opportunity to meet with some sick kids, who would undoubtedly appreciate his presence more than the types who show up to Heisman ceremonies. I think that would receive ample mention leading up to and following the ceremony, while simply showing up to not win wouldn’t really warrant a moment’s discussion.
by burntorangehorn on Dec 7, 2009 7:05 PM CST up reply actions
wont happen though
whens the last time someone skipped the heisman ceremony?
No idea
But that’s one reason it would be so remarkable. Tebow’s “promise”? Peanuts compared to skipping the Heisman ceremony to do passing skeleton to right some things that went wrong in the near-upset.
by burntorangehorn on Dec 7, 2009 7:49 PM CST up reply actions
If that happened I doubt the committee would want to invite a Longhorn for a while
It's a Horns' world. Even Aggies play hoops with a burnt orange ball.
They don't choose by any measure except where the pack separation is
At least as I understand the process, that is. They appear to always look for the first significant gap in total votes past the third-place voter, and cut it off. So sometimes it’s three, sometimes six, but almost always four or five. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the invitations not go to the highest vote-getters, with no one left out in favor of someone with fewer votes.
by burntorangehorn on Dec 7, 2009 8:06 PM CST up reply actions
I'd vote for Gerhart...
Maybe its because I live in the Bay Area and get a chance to see him consistantly, but Gerhart has been an absolute beast this season. 27 rushing TDs! Over 1700 yards! If not for him, Stanford would not have broken their bowl-less streak this season. He single handedly carried them to their 8-4 record (and if Stanford had any semblance of a defense, they’d probably be in the Rose Bowl right now).
As much as I would like to see McCoy recognized for his amazing career (and be given one for last year, when he deserved it), I don’t think I could give him the nod over Gerhart this year.
Sometimes the impossible can become possible if you're AWESOME!
Why Ingram > Gerhart

Looking forward to playing you guys in Pasedena. ;P
